Is the sun wheel really that scary?

I will never go on it again in my whole life EVER. Stationary must be a relative term as it is not exactly STATIONARY. I paid my DNephew to not move a muscle while we were slowly tortured on that doomsday wheel. I will say, while I was trying to forget where I was up there in the sky, the view was amazing!

See, I'm interested in the view, not exactly the "ride" per se. I thought the stationary ones were better but apparently not.

It's funny, this ride seems to have the power to reduce even the most seasoned thrill seekers into blubbering puddles of goo. Then there's me, who hates going on Tower of Terror, but absolutely LOVES the swinging gondolas of the Sun Wheel. ;)

Honestly, I got such a kick out of watching my mom, brother, and dad freak out on this ride as if it was literally an instrument of torture. You just can't buy memories like that. :lmao:

Hop the train andI will hold your hand on the Sun Wheel or any ride.

I once went in a fun hours with my neighbor who speaks very little English. She was behind me and got scared so she grabbed my t-shirt which ended with me screaming which made her panic more and finally me getting a nice imprint on my neck from the collar. I hope you are not that bad:lmao:.

Well I'll be there this weekend but I don't think the Wheel is running again yet is it? lol And no, I'm definitely not that bad!!! I just sit very still and have my fingers threaded into the mesh. I try not to move but if I want to see the view I move veeeeeerrrrrrrryyyyyyyyy slllllooooooooooooooowly. LOL
Now that I think of it, the Mickey Wheel of Death is the only one I'm actually afraid of.........

They do move and when the wind is blowing and they move unexpectedly that's the worst! I do agree tho, the view is amazing!!!!!! Much better when there is water in the lagoon of course. :)

Our first ride the stationary buckets o' death, DH was so freaked out & needed a distraction that he asked me to explain the "Enron thing" to him. I'd just finished a thesis on it & he never asked about it the whole time I was working on it!!! He was just hoping that whatever I told him would be so confusing that it would distract him. :rolleyes1 The next time I got him up there I told the kids to swing the bucket! :rotfl2: Yes, I AM going to H*ll when I die! As long as they have a roller coaster, it'll be fine....

Seriously?? As someone with an extreme fear of heights/falling this is not cool. If DBF EVER said that or did that with me I'd never ride another ride like that with him again......it would be cause for major friction between us for at least a week as well. You're lucky I'm not your DH. :goodvibes

Just to send shivers down some backs (because I too am a bad girl;) ) I thought I would post a few pictures of the Kuranda sky way. We have ridden this twice, and loved it :)

The cableway is 7.5 kilometres (4.7 miles) long.
It has a total of 114 gondola cabins, each capable of seating 6 passengers, providing a carrying capacity of 700 passengers per hour in each direction.
The cableway can operate at a speed of five metres per second (18 kilometres per hour, or 11 miles per hour); however its normal operating speed is much slower to provide guests with the maximum time to enjoy their rainforest experience.
There are 32 towers in total. The highest tower is 40.5 metres (133 feet) high.

Oddly enough, I don't think I would be scared on those, I'd actually like it! I'm just strange, I guess!

no, you get a pass cause it is an irrational fear to start with, so it doesen't have to be rational ;)

Now that Gondola would have me on the floor setting happy and looking at the sky. I just panic when I am not secure about something like bridges and at the offramp to Studebaker Road I would freak out because there was a water channel running along the road.

I hated this ride (aka, the Balancing Buckets of Beelzabub or Spinning Swings of Satan) so much that I almost trampled a small child trying to get away from it, at the end!!! My disclaimer is that I am quite claustrophobic and did not like being locked (trapped) in a cage that swings wildly over water. :scared1:

Yeah, I don't fly either.

Let's put it this way--there are barf bags on the swinging ones for reason! Motion sickness + extreme fear that you will crash and die is not a good time in my book! If they had seat belts I could see how it would be somewhat enjoyable (if I was majorly sedated and handcuffed and forced to ride by evil captors)--but the no-seatbelts and no where to hold on issue gives this ride a big thumbs down!

Mickey's Wheel of Death is not for the faint of heart!:scared1:

Judy those are amazing pics and I too would ride that. Why? It's enclosed for starters, it's easy to just look at the sky and not think about where you are, the views are amazing and I would be looking out and around not down. AND it's not likely that I would ever do something like that more than once so I would be OK with it. I've actually done gondolas like that before, they are amazing. Of course they can break and I could plunge to my death but part of mastering my fears is doing stuff like that. I try not to let my fears get the best of me so I do climb mtn paths, I do gondola rides, I ride the Mickey Wheel of Death. I may not like it but I do it anyway. :)

It was way more queasiness-inducing than I had thought it would be. I think if the bucket had been able to swing about one or two degrees further, I would have been ill. Then again, swinging rides can do that to me. (I've always had to sit near the middle of the swinging "pirate ship" ride at the local theme park because being at either end of the ship makes me turn green when we get to the big arcs!)

But now that I know what to expect from the Wheel O Death, I plan to ride again, especially if I have my thrill-ride junkie kids in tow.

Just reading all these posts make me nervous!:scared: I would like to give the swinging ones a try, but I don't know if that'll happen I can't even ride the ferris wheel at our county fair. (but then again I hate all county fair rides...something about them being so portable worries me).

It is silly how I can ride Screamin' and ToT over and over again but yet I don't dare step foot near that giant wheel. Who knows maybe if I can get the courage to do it once I'll end up loving it, thats what I had to do with roller coasters.

It really is a very cool experience. You have parts inside the rainforest, then the canopy, then at the end you come out of the rainforest to the ocean. I agree Life is a lot more enjoyable when you "stretch" yourself.

The swinging gondola made about as motion sick as I have ever been in my life!!!!! They let me off after one revolution as I was green and had my head between my knees!!

I have ridden the stationary cars, and it feels like a non-ride to me...just a way to catch the breeze and look around.

Ugh, the swinging ones removed the joy for the rest of the day for me!!!

I lived in Kuranda for 13 years and Cairns for 4. Never got me on skyrail so I won't be riding Mickey's wheel of death on our next trip.:rotfl:

No I suppose not LOL! That is hard core will power. What did you do with the out of town guests that wanted to go?

My 2 yr old at the time loved the sun wheel the swinging ones it is 1 of her favorite rides.

When she turned 3 she loved it still we have a trip planned end of may she is 4 now and cant wait to ride the mickey fun wheel.

We rode it the day before it closed in oct and we told her it was going to be mickey mouse fun wheel she was hoping it would open the next day with mickey face on it.
