Or, is it one of the restaurants that is run and owned by an outside company? I ask because we had some pretty severe issues there, and I wondered how to let someone know. Yes, we tried while there, to no avail.
Here's what happened. My dd, (21), and her best friend from high school (20) were in WDW last week. Her friend has some really serious food allergies. We had really great dining experiences everywhere, except for TeppanEdo. She told them about the allergies when we checked in. A gentleman came to the 'grill' to talk to her. She explained that she had to have her food prepared with absolutely no cross contamination. She wanted sushi...they had what she wanted. But, the man told her it was impossible to prepare it on a clean surface, and that they couldn't break the item up...she had to take all four pieces of sushi rather than have them make up 2 sets of the 2 types she could eat, on a completely uncompromised surface. I figured they should have been able to just go over to Tokyo Dining and get it done there, but that wasn't offered! So, after a 10 min discussion with this man, she ended up with a small side order of white rice!! She had to practically beg for a second order! It was a completely miserable and awkward experience. She did stop at Tokyo Dining on the way out to see how long it would take to make up a to go order of the sushi she needed. It would have been 40 mins and we had someplace we had to be.
My issue? Even Crystal Palace was able to offer her non-compromised salmon and rice!!! The chef came out and talked to her...said they had salmon on the menu that night...and he would prepare it himself, on a clean surface. She was thrilled and I was amazed!!! Every single restaurant we went to bent over backwards to get her something to eat....to the point that the chefs were almost upset that they couldn't do more for her!! Her allergies are quite extensive...so she ate a lot of salmon, rice, fruit, and bacon!!!
I was just curious as to who owns/runs TeppanEdo.....this young lady really wanted to reach out and tell them of her experience in an effort to have others have a better meal.

Teppan Edo is own by a separate company and there can be a pretty severe language barrier when it comes to food allergies. Most of the Epcot restaurants are not owned or operated by Disney and should be avoided if one has multiple severe allergies. I know I will never eat at any of the restaurants in Japan again since they are all operated by the same company. You might want to recommend that your DD's friend join the Disney Chef's Rock Food Allergies group on FB before her next trip to Disney. They'll be able to help her plan out meals and give real time help with allergies.

Wrong. Absolutely Wrong. My girlfriend is the "girl in the allergy bubble" when it comes to food allergies and Teppan Edo is her FAVORITE restaurant. When we were there in September, we had no problems explaining the allergies and they had to make her food separate in the back due to someone else at our table ordering shellfish (which was cooked on our grill in front of us). We had no issues what-so-ever and they even surprised her with Milk-Ice Cream when they saw her birthday button... they would've brought her something different (like cake or something) but it would've fallen into one of her allergy foods (they told us all of this AFTER her ice cream). Most of the places in the World Showcase have managers that are very good bilingual speakers. Yes, it can be rough at times, but it's not impossible, so don't give up Teppan Edo. You still have to make reservations through Disney Dining and on there you can specify your allergies. The chef even confirms everything before s/he starts. I, myself, have problems with eggs and milk, so he (at our dinner) made sure that I only had 1 type of dipping sauce as the others would probably bother me.

@mousehockey37 I completely agree with you. TE is my fave restaurant, and I have NEVER had any problems with them even though it is an outside owned restaurant. What the OP and the poster after is failing to realize is that you must stress greatly on your ADR your allergies, and continue to stress and clarify this with the chef/manager/waitresses at the restaurant. They are VERY good at accomodating those of us with extensive allergies. With the number of allergies that I have they clarified what I can and cannot have and told me the way it would be made (with no cross contaminations) in the back kitchen instead of on the hibachi grill in front of us. I got white rice (small dish which is standard for everyone except non allergy guests get sukiyaki beef rice-same size). Again, they are very nice and accomodating. If you are in a hurry, DO NOT eat at TE. You are going to be there awhile, which sounds like what happened with your DD's friend was she wanted something specific that they sounded like they were trying to accomodate her with as best as possible but she was in a hurry and couldn't wait the time it was going to take for them to prep it special for her. I'm sorry to hear that but if you need something done special, you need to be willing to wait for it (they were going out of their way for her) and not be in a hurry. I haven't had to wait much longer than anyone else at my table to eat there, but then again I order something from the menu that is pretty standard and they just have to change some things with it so it doesn't contain my allergy trigger foods/ingredients. They also only provide me with soy sauce and none of the dipping sauces since I have allergy triggers with each of them. It is what you make of it. Like I have said before, they are very nice and more than willing to accomodate there if you are willing to work with them and give them more of a chance that what it seems like happened with your DD's friend. Not meaning to offend but it is what it is.

We were not in a hurry. It was a 40+ min wait at Tokyo Dining after 'eating' at TE. And, it was noted on the ADR as extensive food allergies. The hostess saw it and told us a chef would come speak to her. All she needed was for a certain kind of sushi (already on the menu) to be prepared completely apart. They were unwilling to do that and said that it had to come out as shown on the menu. Of course, that would have killed her!!
It is what it is? Hardly. They did nothing to accommodate her...other than to offer her white rice! And water. The gentleman we spoke to, maybe a manager (not a chef unless they are now dressing in blue shirts), was a bit hard to understand. But, I am pretty used to a Japanese accent...I have a Japanese sister-in-law and have had many Japanese exchange students. So, not unfamiliar to me. He kept interrupting this poor girl, not allowing her to finish a sentence. He didn't seem concerned at all.

We ate at GF Cafe, Crystal Palace, Flying Fish, Olivia's, Coral Reef..every single place was able to give her what she needed. Every one. I would have thought that at a restaurant where fish is so prevalent, especially sushi, it wouldn't be an issue. But it was. This kid knows exactly what she needs...and she makes it known, politely. Every single chef was a bit sad that she had so 'little' to eat...but it was what she wanted. She carried rice cakes with her. She knew where she could get what she needed. So, her asking if we could eat at TE because of the fish that was available seemed like a no-brainer. Especially with Tokyo Dining next door. Having already spent an hour having 2 bowls of rice, and knowing that we had somewhere to be, spending at least 40 mins waiting for sushi (that could have been offered to her earlier) wasn't what she wanted to do.

I mean, seriously....the chef at the Crystal Palace made her food from scratch. Sure there was salmon out at the buffet...but it was sauced, and there is no way someone with her allergies would chance eating anything from a buffet! He made her fresh, plain salmon, a plain undressed salad, with oils that she could dress it with, and rice....a large bowl of it!!! That was not what I expected at CP...I was amazed. She was prepared to sit there and eat a rice cake while meeting the characters!!! So, I guess that made up for the TE debacle.

I don't mean to sound argumentative, but we did everything right. This was the only food issue we encountered. It wasn't an issue of time, it wasn't an issue of not giving them advance notice. They just dropped the ball...and really didn't seem to care. They did nothing to accommodate her...other than give her rice. They said there was nothing else they could offer....only what was on the menu was available. Waiting was not an issue!!!! I'm sorry if others have had a completely different experience there. This is one of the reasons I went along with this restaurant....I had seen many examples of them doing what needed to be done for those with dining issues. Nothing could have been further from our experience. I'm not sure what we could have done differently to 'work' with them. I've eaten there before, I know how long it takes to eat...so we planned accordingly...on every level. So yes, it is a bit offensive to be told that we didn't do what needed doing in order to eat there.

You are welcome to have a different opinion but to say that my experience is "Absolutely Wrong" is uncalled for. I'm glad you and your GF have great experiences; many of us with multiple severe allergies have not. People need to know that it's not all sunshine rainbows for everybody. People expecting the same experience as at a Disney restaurant may be disappointed.

I personally have several severe allergies, including 3 that are airborne ANA. Despite talking to a chef ahead of time and to 3 different chefs and managers at the restaurant, I still came WAY to close to being served an allergen. I had my allergies written down along with multiple words that they could be called. Had a manager not brought out their ingredient binder for a different questionable ingredient and I just happened to glance at the ingredients in something else we might not be having this discussion because that particular food contained an ANA allergen for me and I had been told not 5 minutes before that the food was safe.

I sent in my special dietary request form in a month before my trip and spent a good hour on the phone with a chef from Teppan Edo the week before my trip. I was told by the chef that certain foods would be available and safe for me to eat. When I arrived, that chef wasn't scheduled to be in that day and her notes did not mention anything we had discussed. I carry a list of my allergies, including multiple different words that the allergens could be listed as because I have multiple highly uncommon allergies. Three different chefs and the manager came to our table to discuss options as they didn't realize the extent of my allergies. They tried to be through but failed to check everything they wanted to serve me. The white rice is actually cooked in a broth that contains an ANA allergen for me. That was never disclosed and I was told multiple times that the rice was safe and it wasn't. The only reason I know that without a hospital visit is because the manager brought out his ingredient book to ask me about one of the sauces and I causally flipped through to check on the other foods and noticed that my allergy was clearly listed as an ingredient with the rice. What else do you think I could have done? I certainly wasn't in a rush.

It sounds like the OP's DD's friend had a similar experience to what I had and that's really not what we should expect from a restaurant at Disney.

Sounds to me like you both just had the bad luck that had a crew on that "dropped the ball" so to speak, and while I understand that is never acceptable esp at Disney (even though this is NOT a Disney restaurant so to speak), and I know for certain that allergies are nothing to mess with as I have extensive severe allergies and some are uncommon, but I have been here multiple times and have had no problems whatsoever. to Ninja, I had the white rice not cooked in a broth it was steamed in water and had NO problems.

OP, as far as the sushi is concerned there are some things and some restaurants that cannot accomodate to that extensiveness, esp if they are not a DISNEY run restaurant. Wasn't there something that she could have had that wasn't sushi? That would have been easier to accomodate her allergies, yes it stinks that she wanted sushi and wouldnt have been able to have it, but I have had to not have things I have wanted because I would rather eat something else than try to work a dish that is unable to be changed for my allergies and risk dying because of it. Was sushi really that important? And if it was, then why didn't you just go to Tokyo Dining as soon as you knew they were just going to bring the poor girl rice and water?! The chef at the CP was able to accomodate better for your party it seems because he was a Disney restaurant chef and they have more means to work with and many go out of their way to help those of us with debilitating allergies. Though, I must say that many a Disney run restaurant has stunk at doing so, it is ultimately up to the chef and even though it stinks and isn't very Disney-like of them, it happens and there's not much you can do. I know this because I had an issue with a chef and accomodations at a Disney run restaurant (ended up ill from it), and called and talked to the restaurant manager on duty and nothing ever came of it no matter what I did. So just something to keep it mind. I have a feeling you both unfortunately were unlucky in getting the same crew and had and almost "fluke" experience.

Again, I am sorry to hear that this happened to you both.

I was never given the option to have the rice cooked plain. When I pointed out the allergen, the manager actually went pale and said I couldn't have the rice. They were otherwise great and even brought out an upside down cup with a candle on it for my birthday since I couldn't have any of the deserts. This was back in 2012 and my allergies have gotten worse to the point that I can get the same food at TE as I can at a quick service. I have told other people with easy to accommodate allergies to eat at Teppan Edo but to be very careful. Those with rare or unusual allergies that might have trouble being comprehended would be better off with a restaurant where a language issue isn't going to make things more difficult. Yes, this could have happened anywhere but the point I am trying to convey is that it does happen and that people should not drop their guard "because it's Disney."

We considered going to Tokyo Dining, but the wait was very long to be seated. By the time someone had come out to speak to dd's friend, about 20 mins had already gone by! It wasn't just a case of sushi....she could have had many different types of fish....she told the gentleman that. Yet, he said it wasn't an option. It was just a bad experience all around.
The girls had a wonderful trip together, that's all that matters in the end.

I've only eaten at Teppan Edo once and I had problems there...basically, with the way the food from the grill was rationed. My companion and I were dining with a family of four and they were given the bulk of the food while we got nearly empty plates. We talked to a manager about this and they begrudgingly offered us a small percentage off of our bill. We won't be dining there again!

I'm sorry to hear this happened, but what may have seemed like a little, you have to take in consideration that Japanese and other Asian servings are not like N. American servings. They eat a lot less.

That wasn't the problem. Her post states that the other group of people received more food than they did.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious that I am aware of. They section off each serving and serve it, so IDK what happened in their supposed case but I was pointing out other things as well ie: portions.

You stated their food portions seemed small because they serve less at Japanese restaurants. If other people were getting larger portions, that was obviously not the reason for their small portion.

The point is, how do they know the others really did get more food then they did? Did they go and measure their fellow diners food portions? Did everyone at the table order the exact same thing and they got the short end of the deal or did their servings just come out to be less based on what they ordered etc?! These are the unknowns that the poster didn't specify.

Normally, they are very strict with how they divide up the food to make sure the first few people aren't getting most of it.

But again, w/o that information and/or being there, it's pretty pointless arguing this.

I'm sorry to hear of your bad experience at TE. We go to WDW often and had never eaten there, so decided to try it just this past weekend. We were sorely disappointed. It was so lackluster and the food was really bland. We won't be back. If your DD's friend ever returns and is in the mood for sushi, I would suggest going to Kimono's at the Swan instead. It's a REAL sushi restaurant (unlike Tokyo Dining which is seriously dumbed-down) with a wide variety of fish and other offerings. Service was wonderful.

At TE, the food is cooked hibachi style. The diners sit around a grill. Multiple parties sit at the same grill table

If the food is not portioned evenly, it is glaringly obvious

We were there one evening and I ordered beef tenderloin.

Some of my party ordered chicken and shrimp.

Other diners ordered chicken and steak.

The chef chopped up all the beef together and shared my tenderloin with the other party.

I guess it was just easier for him.

The OP asked a specific question, which has not been entirely answered yet this thread has become one to complain about or pat TE on the back. OP, I would suggest calling Disney and asking them how you can get in touch with management at TE to express your concerns. I am sure somewhere there should be able to help you. You might have a speak to several people but at least you won't get people going off on a tangent.

Did you read my previous posts in this thread? If so, you would've known that I know darn well how things work at Teppan Edo. :rolleyes2
