We are heading to MK for one day Feb 28 and we have an hour
drive ahead of us that day. I would really like to be there for rope
drop as my oldest dd
wants to meet Rapunzel and I hear you need to go early!!
I am thinking of driving down the day before and hitting dtd and spending tje night somewhere close and inexpensive. Any recommendations or should I just drive the day of!

Sure, stay in a Disney value. Free parking and perfect for your situation.

We will have grandparents with us too...anyone else have suggestions for one night stay close to MK???

You could try Hotwire.com and look for Downtown Disney or Disney's maingate. That should put you pretty close. What's your budget?
And how many people?

I am not really strict on budget...Husband would prefer a suite so the kids can get to bed early and we can still stay up! It would be two rooms, one for us and one for the grandparents

Buena Vista Suites will give you the two rooms but one room will have 2 queen beds and one room will have a sofabed. Both rooms have tv's. Buena Vista Suites also offers a free breakfast buffet.
If you go to expedia several two bedroom resorts come up for around $110-200 per night.
You could book two rooms at a Disney value resort for about $90 each that night. So for under $200 you would have two rooms and be onsite already with free parking. You could request connecting rooms.

thanks for the info. do you know how long it takes to get to MK from buena vista suites??

Probably about 10 minutes to the gates then keep in mind you have to park, take tram then either monorail or ferry to MK.
If you want to be at the MK for opening I would leave your hotel about 45 mins to 1 hour from opening time.
Personally if it were me I'd spend the one night onsite. I just find it so much easier when visiting MK.

I would love to stay onsite. however....my DH always wants a separate room for the kids and that isnt doable at WDW is it? without getting a villa.

The family suites at AllStar Music are pretty reasonable and it would give you a second room for the kids and a bedroom for you and dh. We had considered this before booking at Wyndham Bonnet Creek. You could also book connecting rooms at any of the values.
