Oh, oh. I'm another one who can't read and voted incorrectly.

I caught it right before I voted and switched my vote. It's not allowed in our house or in my classroom.

I used to say "shoot" quite a bit when DD was little until she started saying it. As a not-quite-two-year-old, it didn't sound like "shoot" at all!

Personally, I feel that as a society, we have become much to loose in the words we have accepted. I am often appalled by the language on primetime television, including "family" shows like 8 Simple Rules and According to Jim.

In our home, we do not allow crap, sucks, pissed off, or any of that ilk. I am also personally offended by the way children in my son's age group (7th grade) use words like queer and retard as insults to one another.

I know that I am in the minority here and I am OK with that. I am going to continue to teach my children about the power of language to both uplift and drag down the speaker and the listener.

I voted wrong too! I answered NO to the question, "is crap a bad word?" didnt read the 2nd question... LOL! You're confusing the crap out of me!:earseek: :teeth:

While I don't rank it up there with some of the other 4 letter words, I don't like a kid saying it. I ran a school age daycare for 8 years and those kids knew that I did not like that word being said as I considered it a swear word.

My Mom always used the S and F words when she got mad.

As is 'Fudge' and 'Sugar'

I never once heard the woman swear for real. :D

I wish I can say the same for myself, but I can't. I'm a potty mouth.

I'm in the "Frank Barone" frame of mind & say "Holy Crap!" too often! (but then, I don't have kids in the house either.

Last Halloween, I went to my brother's house to help with Trick-or-treating. After the 6 year-old triplets and their older brother were back at their house and sortung through their candy, I was telling how their Uncle Tim broke a tooth by chewing a candy that he should have sucked. Little Daniel said: "oooh...you said suck!" I had to explain (with a straight face & my sister stifling her laughter) that suck is a word, that when used properly, is perfectly acceptable. We still laugh about this!

My kids used to talk about hearing people say "the bad D word" and "the bad S word".....dumb and stupid!

I voted wrong too!! Didn't realize it until after I hit the magic button. I answered your post title 'is crap a bad word' as in NO, it's not IMO. But my answer would have been yes on your poll, as it's allowed in our home. However, we don't have children so we'll wait and see on that issue. But I don't blink an eye when someone says it, and I say it often as well.

"it's the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York" -- from the musical "Guys and Dolls".

in that context, it's not a bad word at all -- unless you dislike gambling.

in the 70's most radio stations would bleep the word in Paul Simon's "Kodachrome".

I don't particularly care to hear it out of the mouth of a young child, but

it doesn't rank up there with Carlin's 7 dirty words, does it?

This is a tricky question. It's fine for adults to say "crap" but I don't like to hear it come from my children.

A fellow soccer player was over here on the weekend to play with my 11 yr. old. Afterwards, DS says that he doesn't want to play with A., because he swears a lot. That's the 2nd friend from this team that is swearing in our house when he plays with my son. My son does not care to play with children who swear.

MinnieCarousel - I remember when Frank Barone also said "Holy Crap Crappin' Crap" That one cracks me up!!

Yep we say it, along with doddy, poopy, poo-poo and other forms of the word.....LOL!

My son also says This sucks, that sucks everything sucks.........Hes 13 and I choose to pick my fights, this isn't one of them.

I voted wrong too!!!!! Sorry!!! Crap is allowed in our house -- it beats the alternatives! I really don't think of it as a bad word.

I'm guilty. I use it quite often. It isn't taking of s___ either. It is just a word to me--never thought bad of it even when Dan and I discussed it once (he dislikes that word).

One day DD said she wasn't feeling well--she had the "crap". I asked asked what she said again and she repeated it. DH came in and I mentioned it to him and he told her that Doctor R didn't say you have the "crap" , he said you had the "crud". Oh.

It sounded terrible coming out of a little girl's mouth--I guess it doesn't sound much better coming from mine either. Definitely makes you think...

We don't use the regular words or freakin' or frickin', or friggin' or frappin'. Those last 4 are no substitute for the real thing. They're nasty (MO).

Sometimes I can get past somene's potty mouth and sometimes I can't. I try to remember how it sounds coming from others so I can refrain from it. Nothing to do with righteousness though. LOL

Very funny memory for me... I got in big trouble for saying crap once in high school in history class (circa 1982) when the principal was sitting in on our class. To put it in context, I believe I was answering a question and added something about "all the rest of that crap.."in my answer. Well... I got a huge laugh from the class and a note home from the principal! (all girls Catholic school)

So I guess crap was not a bad word in my house, although I never really hear my kids saying it. I don't like "suck" as an adjective though and we do not use it in our house. We also don't say stupid or shut up.

I voted no...I don't think it's a bad word. My mother on the other hand thinks it ranks right along with Carlin's 7 words you can't say on TV. I wasn't allowed to say crap until I moved away from home. My kids on the other hand say it at grandma's house all of the time and she doesn't care at all!

My dd 12 still thinks stupid and dumb are bad words, so we don't use the word crap.

Just curious, if you are having a "discussion" with your child (say a 8-11 year old) and they say your opinion is "crap". Or if your child says the dinner you just cooked tasted like "crap"? Or doing your homework is "crap"? Are you still all right with the word crap? and if not, what context makes the word crap acceptable?

In answering your question--I usually use it to mean "stuff" as in all that crap in the playroom.

If DD used in as in your description, well, we'd have a talk. My cooking might taste like crap but if she ever calls it that or anything else, she'll be in dog house.
