Is Coronavirus affecting your travel plans?

I still have a ticket to Italy on March 12th and I am 50/50 on going. My husband is already there, we speak the language, have relatives we visit and it is my happy place.

I am not afraid of catching the virus at all, but I am monitoring if they require self quarantine at home for 14 days or what. I have an idea we are going to find this has already spread and is in many communities already, so maybe so of the travel fears will subside.

Where are you flying to? AA has cancelled flights to Milan

My ticket is to Milan with Delta - but I could change to Rome although their flights to Milan were still going as of last night. I know that may all change. Airline schedules may be the other thing that makes me cancel.

I just read that AA canceled flights to Milan out of NY and Miami through the end of April due to reduced demand.

How this impacts your Delta flights? I guess you’ll have to play the wait and see game over the next days and week. Hopefully, you don’t get stuck over there should you keep your plans to travel to Italy.

There would be worse things than getting stuck in Italy...lol! (just adding some levity to the situation) and I agree with you. Even if they cancel flights out of Milan, the agent I spoke to said there will still be flights out of Rome. And I can change my ticket to a round trip out of Rome. There are lots of Americans still in Rome and really the other regions are continuing along fairly normally. I cannot see them stopping flights completely, but being flexible is key.

We go often, so it isn't the end of the world to cancel. However, I am also trying to be balanced in all of this and will continue if there really seems to be little to no risk.

We just had our Majestic Princess cruise cut short.
We left Sydney on the 12th February and were due to arrive in Singapore on March 2nd. The cruise was cancelled after Fremantle on the 22nd February so we stayed on board over the weekend and then flew from Perth to Singapore and brought forward our original flight from there to London, arriving back in the UK earlier this week.
The cruise line have, so far, been generous with their compensation but it was still a great disappointment. Ironically, after a few days acting as a hotel in Fremantle, the ship eventually sailed to Singapore where it is scheduled for dry dock. Obviously the crew all remain on board but the potential liability surrounding the passengers has been removed thus preventing another Diamond Princess situation.
Next cruise is September, Southampton to New York via Iceland. No current plans to cancel.

May I ask what the current take on this situation is in England? We're scheduled to fly to London in early May and then board the Regal Princess for 12 days. We've not considered cancelling yet but then again, I've also heard no specific mention of the UK in our news.

That's exactly the treatment recommended for Coronavirus (minus the DayQuil). The vast majority of cases are quite mild, like a cold.

As a professional scientist, my opinion is that they're going to find that Coronavirus is far less deadly than the 2% mortality rate that's been reported, due to the non-diagnosis of the milder cases. Once it spreads into a more medically-prepared country a better idea of the actual mortality rate will probably emerge.

The data for Italy isn't particularly encouraging, nor from South Korea. And, if you think those countries are "worse" than the US in terms of preparation, you'd be wrong. They are both medically advanced countries. Singapore too. In fact, I'd argue they are BETTER prepared because they have universal health care, which means sick people see doctors (covered) rather than "tough it out" (going to work even because you are not paid unless you work, and NOT going to the doctor because of high deductibles and co-pays). I'd agree that China might not be the best barometer (not to mention I do not trust their reporting of the data), but the other countries I mention certainly are.

I live in the UK. They are now starting to find cases unrelated to travel or contact, mainly because they are starting to test people with coronavirus symtoms. As of few moments ago there are 12 additional cases with a total of 35 and I think 2 of these don't have any relations to travel or contact. There is currently one case of a man who got the virus in London and brought it to China!

Apologies to add to my previous message this last case it's quite concerning. As he was working in Bristol and in Bristol there as no known cases, and then travel through London. So there is a possibility that the virus might be already widespread here!

Thank you. Any talk at all of closing the borders? Strangely enough, the Canada Government has a permanent Travel Advisory in place for the UK but it's not health-related and is not of the status to avoid travel (yet).

The UK government hasn't been very proactive on this front. I think they value their economy too much
You can see how in this article they seem more worried about keeping the morale of the people than containing the virus. So yeah as I wrote in another post I think they have been too relaxed with the testing and quaratining of their previous cases contacts and this may have created the issue.

My daughter is booked for Prague next week for her Spring Break.....No word yet on weather United will waive the cancellation fee. Kids coming back from the Italian study abroad are being quarantined, so one her friends if quarantined would set her back an entire semester. Feel bad for them as even now flights to FLA are 800$

We will be going to WDW regardless. No point in living your life in fear. We also live in a large city, so I fail to see how it'd be more dangerous at WDW than where we are if Covid 19 does become more prevalent in the US in the coming months.

Well you could look at it another way, it isn't just about you (general you) getting it.
Non-essential travel could cause it to spread faster. You may be bringing it to WDW, and in turn spreading it across the US and to other countries.
I am not advocating locking ourselves away, but people's decision to not travel doesn't mean they are living in fear of getting sick. Maybe some are just concerned that they'd be a part of spreading it.

Well not travel since this is local to me this year but a conference that I was going to be attending next week just got cancelled

first time I get to meet more people with the same condition as me and this is what happens. We don’t even have any confirmed cases in my state. And I gets that not entirely the point but the one time I get to go to this (it’s a rotating conference) and it cancels is a little more then frustrating and disappointing

I do have a Delta ticket through JFK but on the flight that they code share with Alitalia and that flight is still shown as being able to be booked, but I have an idea that will change.

I may try to fly into Rome, but not if I need to pay more, as at this point we are not really going to get to visit where we had intended anyway. Interestingly enough, flights to Rome are still pretty full in each direct during my travel dates in March.

Everything seems to be evolving so quickly though, things will probably change again in a day or two.

They're starting to suspect the same thing on the U.S. west coast, FWIW. I don't remember now if it is Washington or Oregon, but health authorities are revisiting non-flu clusters of flu-like illness to attempt to determine whether they may have been undetected cases of coronavirus that didn't meet the testing criteria, which still hinged on travel to China at the time. The flu has been so rampant here and so few people get tested to confirm the cause in mild cases that it would be easy for outbreaks to get overlooked.

I think that when some people talk about possibly not being able to go forth with travel plans, it's not necessarily due to fear of becoming ill.

For instance, my DH has mentioned that the owner of the business DH works for has voiced concerns because they are a small manufacturing company and they import the major components of the items they manufacture from China. The longer China is in this situation, the better chance it will affect the workings of this small company, and because they are a small company, what affects them is more likely to then trickle down and affect their employees. If for any reason they start to have trouble getting the supplies they need and they have to shut-down production, we're not going to still opt to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to go to WDW, kwim? We'll be spending as little as possible until DH is working again. Which is exactly what we would if DH were to stop working for any reason at all. So if we have to cancel our plans, it could very well be due to the economic side effects of the virus, rather than anyone being ill or being afraid of becoming ill.
