Another thread made me think about this life-altering query.
I think it's a thick, chunky soup.
I think it's a thick, chunky soup.
It sure is!Doesn't matter. It's yummy.
ETA: "thick, chunky" is the definition of a stew. From Pioneer Woman: https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/food-cooking/cooking-tips-tutorials/a38368648/stew-vs-soup/
But many stews do have a broth base.I would call it a stew because it doesn't have a broth.
It's neither. It's chili. You can have many kinds of chili just like you can have many kinds of stews and soups.Another thread made me think about this life-altering query.

Oh you mean like EVOO or DELISH? Oy!!As long as nobody tries to call it a "stoup", one of a number of made up Rachel Ray words. Then, the gloves really come off!

Ah, but they don't end up with a broth. But many stews do have a broth base.
Well, now wait a minute, I love chili so much but why does it get its own category? That's like saying Pop Tarts aren't a pastry but are just their own thing. I think Chili has to fit into some sort of culinary category...It's neither. It's chili. You can have many kinds of chili just like you can have many kinds of stews and soups.
Who knew??? Things you learn on the Disboards! Thank you @LordManhammer for the discussion a cloudy Friday!According to wikipedia, chile con carne (i.e., Texas chili, chunks of beef braised in a sauce made from chiles) is a stew.
