As you know today May 3rd is Derby Day and I am wondering if anybody has plans to watch the 2025 Kentucky Derby today? Right now I learned that Journalism is the top horse to watch and that the original pick Rodriguez had gotten scratched from the race due to an injury. As a lover of horses I always love learning about the Kentucky Derby and reading about it in my horse books
Which horse do you think will win the Kentucky Derby this year?

I've always been a horse lover and was a committed Derby watcher up until the last few years. I hate how the top colts are scrambling to get points for the Derby then trainers are hoping to get a win on the first Saturday in May instead of what's best for the horse or hoping to have a long, lucrative career. Many top fillies and mares race at 4 and 5 but when was the last time you saw a top colt run past November of their 3 year old year? Plus the number of trainers who have had late scratches by the vet in the days before or of the Derby. The owners and trainers just don't seem to have the best interest of the horses in mind, it's just about making the big race and holding their breath that their entry finds the wire. I can't watch it and support this madness any longer. And don't get me started on the drug abuse pushed onto race horses. There are several trainers who should have been banned for life, not just barred for a few years or in certain jurisdictions.

I'm sorry to be such a downer but I've been to racetracks on big days and have seen horrific breakdowns. Yes, horses get injured in their stall, in the pasture, in cross ties, just about anywhere they are but I just can't watch it anymore as a form of entertainment when it's about money and not the athlete.

Well.... being a journalist.....🤔🤔🤔🤔.... but as I shared in the gratitude thread... I going with final Gambit.. you will have to read my post... because I love word smithing..... though not sure if scratched... not my mane squeeze

I live about 20-30 minutes from Churchill Downs. We wait all year for the few weeks leading up to and including Derby Day. I bet on Owen Almighty for the name only. I have placed about 8 very small bets over the past few days and have not won once. DS18 asked me about 30 minutes before Derby to place $10 on Sovereignty to win. He was happy with the outcome.

Great way for DS to jump up and down...I glad I didn't see the aerial view initially... I would have scared the dogs on my 4th place horse... I don't wager

Mom and I saw the Kentucky Derby and we were surprised when Sovereignty won because Journalism was about to win but Sovereignty really showed his true colors. I also saw Owen Almighty and I really wanted him to win because Owen is my favorite boy's name and I hope that Sovereignty passes his winning talents to his foals. I do agree that they should do away with two year old thoroughbred horse racing and start training them at four and five. Because when I have read my Thoroughbred horse books two year olds are still foals and if they are trained to race too soon they develop problems and that can cause early retirements for a lot of racehorses. How is Rodriguez? Did they say when he could race again yet?

We watched it yesterday. I don't really know anything about horse racing. I just like to see the horses. That weather was giving me anxiety just seeing all that. I picked Sandman... I don't think my pick ended up doing very well.

This was my first time to watch the Derby in years, something always got in the way. I didn't have a favorite since I don't keep up with it. I heard several commentators say that there were four or five that were come from behinders but I never heard which ones they were.

I heard that Rodriguez was probably going to be in the Preakness. And that it was up in the air whether or not Sovereignty would be in it.

I do wish we could see more fillies becoming Kentucky Derby winners because not since Winning Colors made history in the 1988 Kentucky Derby as the first and only filly to win the Triple Crown because even in my horse books they often have said that fillies are faster than colts. My great-uncle used to love watching the Kentucky Derby and would watch it every year because he loved horse racing a lot. Do you remember when Barbaro won or when Charismatic became a champion but had to be retired due to an injury? Charismatic's story is one of the most interesting stories of Kentucky Derby history

No filly has ever won the triple crown. Winning Colors won the Kentucky Derby, but was 3rd in the Preakness and 6th in the Belmont. Rachel Alexandra won the Kentucky Oaks and the Preakness, but didn't run in the Belmont.

And the Triple Crown is cancelled. A spokesperson representing the horse of Sovereignty said that the horse will not race in the Preakness Stakes.

NBC’s ratings are about to go down the drain since most casual viewers won’t be tuning in…
