I've always been a horse lover and was a committed Derby watcher up until the last few years. I hate how the top colts are scrambling to get points for the Derby then trainers are hoping to get a win on the first Saturday in May instead of what's best for the horse or hoping to have a long, lucrative career. Many top fillies and mares race at 4 and 5 but when was the last time you saw a top colt run past November of their 3 year old year? Plus the number of trainers who have had late scratches by the vet in the days before or of the Derby. The owners and trainers just don't seem to have the best interest of the horses in mind, it's just about making the big race and holding their breath that their entry finds the wire. I can't watch it and support this madness any longer. And don't get me started on the drug abuse pushed onto race horses. There are several trainers who should have been banned for life, not just barred for a few years or in certain jurisdictions.
I'm sorry to be such a downer but I've been to racetracks on big days and have seen horrific breakdowns. Yes, horses get injured in their stall, in the pasture, in cross ties, just about anywhere they are but I just can't watch it anymore as a form of entertainment when it's about money and not the athlete.
