I just got an email from a seller of pins....
The prices are really high...but what I wanted to know is
about Prototype pins...he has 3 of them...one is Daisy power
which I guess is now in production, the other is Scrooge McDuck, the 3rd
is Robin Hood....now, How do you tell if they are Prototypes...
I picked up 2 of these last month on CM landyards cause
I though they were cute....

Can anyone help?

At one of the seminars I went to at the NFFC Convention, Becky from DL Pin Trading explained it somewhat.

You really have to have the 2 pins next to each other to compare if you can't physically see the difference. You might ask the seller what the differences are. Sometimes the prototype pins are bigger. If they got the pins from Disneyauctions, those will comewith a Certificate of Authenticity.

I recently sold a prototype pin of a DS Millennium pin. The pin was bigger than the final pin that was sold and it also had all this extra metal around it. You could defintely see the difference.

Sometimes it might be a color difference. Or a stamp on the reverse of the pins difference. There could be hundreds or just one or two. It's kind of like Artist's Proofs for some other collectibles. They are the ones they made first.

If you trust the seller and know them, and you really want the pin........then I would say to go for it. Some people call the pins that were released on CM lanyards for a few weeks before going on sale "prototype". That is not what a prototype is. So if that is what the seller means, they are probably talking about the pin that you already have.

In my own opinion, I haven't found them highly tradeable, especially if they look exactly the same as the final product.
I hope this helps!

Thanks so much for responding....The one pin I know is
now in production, the 2 others are not....I do have
one of the 2 but...did get it on the CM lanyard...
I was just curious!

Thanks a bunch!!

I keep thinking that it would have to be a special pin to want to pay more for it as a prototype.
Now the prototypes of pins that don't go into production is one thing (ask ebay) but I wouldn't pay a lot more for a pin that is basically the same.
