Iran wants FIFA to remove the USMNT from the WC due to a Twitter post

Just to put this in perspective, this is the same level of tension that will be seen 2pm ET tomorrow:

I pray the Stars and Stripes will be victorious (I want the 1998 loss avenged once and for all). Go USA!

I don’t follow sports at all so I have no clue about the World Cup. I like watching the last week tonight with John Oliver and he did a whole segment on how corrupt FIFA is and the way they choose where the World Cup is played. It was eye opening especially how they built all those stadiums in Qatar.
FIFA and it's President are the definition of corruption. Too bad the members don't have more respect for their sport to do something about it.

It’s UEFA (Europe) that mainly controls FIFA. They are the definition of corruption. We try to stand up to them, just look at the last FIFA election, but our NATO allies don’t won’t to risk being banned from sanctioned events (national teams bread and butter money makers).

The WC is the most watched event in the world and is even bigger then the Olympics. North America is hosting in 2026.

Name a song that describes your feelings on tomorrow’s match and will you be watching?:

Ooops, sorry, it’s Eee Ron. Don’t want to cause an incident.
To be fair, if the reporter is right and that is the correct way to say Iran, I have no problem saying it that way from now on. We as a human people should always show respect when ever possible. That’s how we move forward in a global society (I still want the USA to win 5-0 though).

One think I think we all can agree on is that Iran does have some delicious food.
(According to the internet, you can use dried cranberries or apricots instead of barberries.)

Honestly Iran should be removed from FIFA for how it has been treating their own people.
And we should never have sent our athletes to China for the Olympics while decrying the genocide of the Uyghur muslims of China.. yet here we are.

Hockey Canada right now is rife with accusations of rape and mistreatment of women .. yet here we are .

We continually look the other way from atrocities for sports because they make money. It’s vile.

As far as the level of tension today .. my husband believes no Iranian should have agreed to even play for the team. I believe it’s likely far more nuanced and that’s easy to say from cozy Canada but their lives and families would be at risk if they didn’t play for the regime.

Agree on all points.

This morning pre-match they were talking about the team and some things they were going to do/not do (honestly DH was watching more than I) and they said "the players were told that if they "did/didn't do" then they were risking their families lives." Imagine being told that.

It really is mind-boggling. My daughter's GF is Persian, and one of her siblings is an activist here in the States who went to the trouble of legally changing their name to protect the family they still have back in Iran. I can't even imagine what it must be like to live/have lived under a regime so extreme that an ex-pat's adult child would fear their political activities/protests/organizing in the United States would put grandparents, cousins, and other relatives back in Iran in danger.

But this will be the first WC match I've watched on purpose (I did catch most of US-England because it was on at the bar when we went out for lunch) because DD and her GF have both spend so much time talking it up in our group chat that I'm actually curious to see how it turns out. Hopefully it will be a bit more eventful than the US-England match, which really made me wonder why soccer is so popular. :duck:
