Can you upload a DVD that you already have onto your ipod, or are all videos required to be purchase through iTunes?

If you buy a dvd converter online or at stores not sure if you can get one at the stores.. im buying one online.. anyways by buying a dvd converter for about 30 dollars you can convert as many dvd's as you want to ipod format and transfer them to itunes 
I had a free trial of a great one that allowed me to convert 4 movies, and im planning to buy it for myself for christmas..
