I want to get an ipod or mp3 for my ds14 for upcoming december trip. I don't know much about any. any suggestions. I don't want to spend a lot of money but I want to get one that will last.

buzz2400,
How about the latest--iPod iPod Nano ?

...It's not exactly cheap, but... it has a lot going for it...

(Isn't it cute?)

There are a lot accessories for iPods--like the latest iHome clock radio...

They aren't cheap but my husband, son and grandson are crazy about theirs, wouldn't trade it for anything. I got my husbands thru Amazon and signed up for their credit card(while I ordered) got I think and extra 30 off I paid around 159.05 with free ship. Carol :earsgirl:

My son has an Ipod mini. I borrow it when I walk...now "I" want one, LOL! I'm interested in knowing if there are high-quality more affordable options out there :)

The answer to your question really depends on your sons needs. The prices vary depending on the brand and the space they have on it. Does your son own a ton of cds? Does he like to listen to a wide array of music? Does he listen to it constantly?

If the answers to these questions are yes then I would suggest getting an regular ipod. They hold anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 songs. This will endure that he has enough space for all of his music and it will last him for a long time.

The nano might work if he listens to a lot of music, but is not over the top about it. They can hold 500 to 1,000 songs depending on the model.

The last apple option is the shuffle. If he likes music, but doesn't like a lot of different music all the time and prefers to only have a mix of favorite songs then this one is perfect. It will hold 120 to 240 songs.

Dell also makes mp3 players. Called the Digital Jukebox. They have 3 sizes which go 2,000 & 5,000 & 15,000.

One of my best friends own a regular iPod and he loves it.

I own an iPod shuffle and I think it is the best thing for me, but I have heard a lot of complaints that it doesn't hold enough songs and that the shuffling would drive them nuts. I love it though.

My SO also owns a dell DJ and has said nothing, but good things about it so you really just have to find what works best in your situation. Oh! She does wish it had all the fancy attachments you can buy like apple does.

Other than Dell and Apple though I have heard nothing, but bad things so I would stick to those companies.

I hope I helped! :scratchin

I was shopping for an iPod, or something similar, about a year ago, and decided on a Zen by Creative. It was more affordable (I think at the time, a 20GB iPod was about $299 or $349, and my Zen which is 30GB, was $249 -- should be much less by now).

It has the same or very similar features, and it has longer playback time than the iPod, although I understand that iPod has significantly improved the playback time. The other reason I chose the Zen over the iPod is the battery. At least back then when I bought mine, the only way to have the iPod battery changed was to take it in to an Apple dealer, or to ship it to the company. With the Zen, I can replace the battery myself (but I haven't had to yet).

When we were researching my techie friend said you can most likely get a decent quality MP3 player for a lot less than any of the apple ipod versions.

That said, we went with ipods.
With teens you gotta consider the "coolness" factor too. ;)
DD's just HAD to have i-pod minis. I got a regular ipod for myself.
We can use a lot of the same accessories and I got a JBL speaker that accomodates both the ipod and the mini - so it works for us.

They're not cheap - but ours have logged A LOT of playtime and never had a problem. They have helped save my sanity on more than one long trip too.

Good Luck deciding

We have both an i-pod mini for DD12 and a Dell DJ that my husband and I share. My daughter loves her ipod (again coolness factor in junior high). The dell had a lot longer battery life, can hold a lot more music, and is, in my opinion, easier to use. Also, with the dell you can download music from any site -- with the ipod you can only use apple's site.

You need to figure out what you want you think your son would like the best and go from there. The ipod mini is being phased out for the nano which is cute and small, but holds a lot less songs for the same price as the mini.

iPod! We have a regular iPod, a mini, and a shuffle. My dh wants a nano for Christmas. He's a Mac nut! But they are so easy even I can figure out how to use them.

I just bought an Ipod mini today for my son, who will be 16 shortly.
I didn't know until after I bought the ipod mini that they were discontinued.
I had to buy him the light blue mini because the silver was sold out.

I hope my son likes it. Now I want one.

IPOD here too!!! DD13 got one and I loved hers so DH bought me one :goodvibes !!! DD5 has my old LYRA RCA MP3 player and she loves it too! DH has the creative zen, we LOVE our music!

I got an iPod for my birthday last May and just last week, I won an iPod shuffle from a local radio station. I love it! They are so much better than portable CD palyers or walkmans!! :teeth:

and, if you get the ipod (not mini or shuffle) there is an accessory connector that's about $30 that will allow you to transfer/store digital photos on the ipod's hard drive until you can get home to your desktop. you won't be able to view them, (unless you have the "ipod photo") , but it sure beats dragging the laptop on vacation with you

i have the U2 ipod and love, love love it!!

(also a mac nut) :goodvibes

We have 3 Ipod minis at our house, and everyone loves them. One of them belongs to my 9 year old dd and it's the best money she ever spent. She listens to it constantly and it's very easy for her to use. She also loves to play the name that tune game on it. When looking for the best option for her, I really thought the Ipod was the best value (and it's pink LOL).

A week after I buy the mini, they introduce the nano. Go figure.

I wanted an ipod for the coolness factor, even though it was a surprise gift. And in some ways I love it (DESPITE it being an Apple product), except that it is really hard to turn off - does anyone else have this problem with thier ipod?

Note that most of the ipods (exceptions being the shuffle and nano) contain moving parts. If you drop them enough (sometimes once is enough, if you do it just right) you have a very expensive paperweight. Warranty won't cover it, applecare (the extended/extra warranty essentially) won't cover it either. If your son tends to drop things, step on them, knock them around in his bag, that's something to consider.

We're at the apple store a lot (my husband is a tech for an organization with a lot of macs, so he's always in and out picking up or dropping something off and I go in to browse for new toys) and there's always a couple of (usually male and teenage) customers standing at the guru counter trying to get their ipod fixed, and it's got a big dent in it from being dropped. If there's a dent in it - apple assumes you dropped it and that's why it broke, even if it broke for reasons unrelated to the dent.

The nano and shuffle are much less fragile, although they hold fewer songs.

For 50 bucks we bought our DD11 a Memorex MP3 player, updated the memory card and "VOILA" 1,000+ songs we download free from Bearshare

Don't you have to pay to download onto IPODS??
