For 50 bucks we bought our DD11 a Memorex MP3 player, updated the memory card and "VOILA" 1,000+ songs we download free from Bearshare

Don't you have to pay to download onto IPODS??

You only have to pay if your purchase songs from the Itunes store. Most of my music has come from my cd collection or cd's from the library. You can use music from just about anywhere, you just have to convert to Itunes format. Occasionally a song is protected, so you have to put it on a cd first, then put it in Itunes, but otherwise it's quite and easy.

How about Limewire? My daughter uses that service and downloads songs to the computer. Can they then be put on an IPod or equivilent?
Thanks Disnoids! I have been just thinking about this whole IPod thing today.. and waalaa! Should have known someone on the Dis would have all the info I want. And ask the same questions I wanted to ask!
Thanks!

I have an IRiver, smaller than an Ipod, holds just as much music as the mid range Ipods, cheaper, and you can record more things, ie: dolwnloaded music, and even from a cd player and voice. Alot more options in a smaller and better unit!!!

what sells me on it is the recoding to it from my cd's. It comes with a little wire you plug into your computers headphone jack, then it plugs into the IRiver, then the IRiver has it's own headphone jack you can listen through, just play the cd in your computer (or even stereo/walkman) and press record on the IRiver.....genius.

i picked this up in June and used it all summer...i wasnt sure at first because its so cheap, but it works great! it can hold alot of music...not as much as an ipod, but more than i really need. the battery life is really long, and it comes with an arm band for walking!not one porblem! not to mention it has FM!! :teeth: i highly recomend it!!!! they have one with more MB's but its a bit expensive. good luck!!!

Why don't you just rip the CD and download it? :confused3

Another iRiver owner here (actually bought it for DH) and we're really happy with it. MUCH cheaper ($140 for 1G), includes an FM radio, and because it uses flash memory it can be used while running, etc. without the songs getting scrambled. There are many options out there that you might want to check out, especially if you're not stuck on having the iPod line....

why go through extra work if you don't have to?? :confused3 :confused3

here I just plug play record all at the same time, no zip, save, name, then record, none of that, plug record all at the same time!

Again to each his own, but if there are some that are computer illiterate and don't know or want to download songs, with an IRiver they don't have to. Not to mention someone like me who has over 500 cd's I am not going to put that much music on my computer just to record certain songs onto my IRiver.

Also I don't need to mess with mp3 or itunes or websites like that. I use Yahoo music which is cheap and when a song I like comes on I just press record, no dl'ing or anything.

We have the iRiver too and love it, have had no problems with it at all. DD and DH are always looking for it, I guess we'll have to get another! What sold us ultimately was the price, but it's also smaller and has longer playback than the iPod. It holds the same amount of music as the iPod mini, I believe(around 1000 songs).

Count me as one who thinks the "cool" factor trumps everything with a kid. I would love to see his face if you decide to get the ipod Nano. He will be the envy of all his friends, and because it is flash-drive based rather than hard-drive based, it will wear well. I have both an ipod shuffle and an ipod mini. I use them for different purposes and love them both. I tried out a Nano--so small and way cool. I would buy one in a heartbeat if I were in the market for another player. I am normally a way-too-conservative decision maker when it comes to money, but in this case cheapest doesn't cut it, IMHO. Good luck with your decision. I think it says great things about you that you want to get him this special surprise for your trip.

We spent about three years researching all mp3 players (technically mp3 is a format/file style not an actual object unless you are talking about computer files) .

The MP3 players we looked at were the Creative Labs, Zen, and of course Ipod. Ipod was and still continues to be the most popular. We have two in our family and LOVE them!

My DH and I have the 20 G photo.
