Youngest DD is keen to have a mini iPod for Christmas (or cash towards one anyway). I was in Boots today and they had just one left, so I bought it (not so much a panic buy as an impulse purchase! ;) ).

Now I've got it, I see it has PC requirements listed as Windows 2000 or XP, and we've got 98 at home (the laptop has XP, but that 'lives' with eldest DD at uni during term time).

DD says she wants to use it 99% for storing her CDs and those borrowed from friends, not really to download tracks from the internet.

My question for you experts out there is will DD be able to transfer CDs to the mini iPod without having Windows 2000/XP, or are we up the creek?

We'll be okay at Christmas, when the laptop will be at home for a few weeks, so she won't be stuck on Christmas morning without being able to use it. So it's not a complete fiasco, but obviously it's not ideal if the PC won't do the business.! I'm completely in the dark about all of this, but I know there's someone out there who'll have all the answers (simple language, please! ;) )

I think you have to have Windows 2000 SP4 or XP for the ipod - well that's what my instructions say!! You could try asking on this ipod site in the forum section:

Hilary I wish I could help but it's all Greek to me :(

We need someone like Alan to come along and translate :)

Good luck!

And as if by magic......

Hello  (Don't be confused, I have my guitar lesson tonight so the laptop stays in the bag :) )

Basically the iPod USB driver will not work with windows 98, although I think the firewire cable will be ok. I am not sure if your PC will have a firewire port or not though.

Someone looks to have written a USB driver that will work with windows 98 though so it is worth having a look at the following site..

I haven't had time to browse through the info in too much detail so if you have any questions once you have looked at it post them back and I'll have a look again when I log in in the morning.

Have Fun :teeth:

Alan.

Thanks, guys :)

Off to check out those links...

I tried to load the software onto Windows 98 and it was having none of it!

I use my ipod alongside my laptop with XP on it. However, since loading the software I have had a few teething problems with my computer, mainly in it shuts itself down if it thinks it is getting an error message from Itunes. This is worrying when sometimes the ipod displays "Do not disconnect" when you are connected through the USB to the lappy. I think it may be worthwhile just upgrading the i tunes software whenever it is available on the net.

I love my ipod, it is excellent, the only thing I would reccommend especially if a kiddie will be using it is get some different coloured headphones for it, there have been a lot of muggings as only ipods have the white headphones. I have a set of Sony ones bought from Comet for £17.99 they give much better sound quality than the mac ones that come with the ipod.

Good luck!!:teeth:
