iPhone vs. Samsung's Galaxy

While I don't own this phone I am on my 5th version of the Android OS and have never had any issues with malware.

I think if you've half a brain you should be safe. Just don't download an app called "XPress PayPal Password Manager" or anything like as dodgy!

A few points:

  1. Although I hold the Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 phones in high regard, they have made it onto Watchdog, a British program about bad trading/rogue traders. It would appear that the S4 advertises a lot of storage space, but unlike the iPhone, is so over swolen with bloatware that the end user gets far less than is advertised.
Then it's a good thing that, unlike the iPhone, an S3 user can go out and "upgrade" their phone by buying a 32GB microSD card for about $20 and popping it in their phone themselves. I transferred the 16GB card that came with my Fascinate over to my S3 and store my media there. With about a dozen apps installed on top of the ones that came with the phone, I still have about 12GB of "built in" memory left.

The same goes for my Samsung Note tablet... I was able to "upgrade" it from 32GB to 64GB in the same manner for peanuts.

Contrary to popular belief the Apple model of app store is not really more secure than the Google model. At the moment less people are attacking it but that doesn't make it safer.

Even if you were to inspect code line by line it is not impossible to hide malicious code in plain sight or to make a simple mistake that leads to malicious code being implemented accidentally, just ask Oracle and Adobe. Signing code doesn't ensure an app is a good app any more than crossing your heart and promising not to be a criminal makes you a good person.

I think this hints at a good point. Though the NC study about the relatively high percentage of apps that have issues is interesting, I suspect it includes a very large percentage of dodgy apps with relatively low installed user base; the kind that most people would probably realize right away to be shady.

If one were to re-weight the findings by actual installed user base for each app in the Play store, I suspect the percentage of vulnerabilities would be a lot lower, and likely a non-issue for most.

Might be worth waiting for a Ubuntu phone...

Sumptuous interface and a great pedigree behind it.

Went from iPhone to the S3 and love it. It would take something amazing from iPhone for me to go back. Downside is there are not many accessories for it, like cases. At first I was lost with it, then when I realized it was like a computer that solved my problem. I can upgrade to the s4 in November and can't wait!

One last suggestion: have you considered a Windows phone? I know they are very much in the minority, but I must confess a certain weakness when it comes to the operating system :)

Samsung Galaxy had infinite expansive memory. Samsung Galaxy Note 2 had the best battery life or of any phone on the market. Androids are open source with limitless abilities. Androids have better reliability.

Apple will not help you if your phone breaks. You will be paying for it no matter what. And don't expect them to replace anything. IPhones have terrible battery life with a chip built in that prevents you from using a 3rd party charger unless you want to seriously damage your phone.

Get the Samsung

To be fair, when my Gen 1 iPad's screen broke, I just took into my local Apple Store and they gave me a new one gratis.

Probably just the exception to the rule though.

I would go with the new Blackberry Z10 - their total touchscreen phone, before I went with a Windows phone. The Z10 is very similar to the iPhone, yet it already has multifunction capabilities. One can open 8 different programs/apps at the same time. It comes loaded with an app to create real Word, PowerPoint & Excel documents & email them back out. (IPhone just inked an deal to get that from Microsoft.) And it already has the ability to lock the phone if stolen, rendering it useless & unsellable, (which iPhone 7 will be getting in the late fall.)

The Q10 version is the familiar QWERTY keyboard version with actual push button, (plus touchscreen top half) which most people think of when they think of Blackberry.

If it weren't for the fact that the Z10 is currently lacking in a LOT of the apps that I personally want, I might have considered it. I'm going with a Samsung.

The Windows phone is really for basic, entry level smartphone users. Those who want the user-friendly ease of "dumb phones" but with basic smartphone features. The only things I see it has going for it are that it has the full Microsoft Office installed to create & send all Windows format documents. It also has multifunction capabilities. (It has a TV commercial out poking fun of the iPhone for lacking that.) And that it has Gorilla Glass for the screen. I've seen demos for Gorilla Glass on YouTube, were they actually ave a gorilla jumping & beating up the glass & it survives. :jumping3:

So Samsung will help you if your phone breaks? They will give you a new one? Or they will let you out of actually paying for it?

I would really like an answer from you on this. I am not getting how Android will let you drop or ruin your phone and give you a new one without charging where Apple won't. That makes no sense to me......and has not been the experience that Android users have had that I have known.

Being able to customize the phone is one of the things that is drawing me to the phone. I like my iPhone, but I'm limited on what I can do with it in regards to making it look how I want.

Jailbreak your phone if you can, it unlocks a whole new catagory. i got mine set up the way of my liking... if an android can do it, a jailbreak iPhone can as well...

Two more possible operating systems:
Symbian
Bada

Symbian is a bit outdated though. I believe it was Nokia's platform before Nokia started to put windows 8 on the phones.

Theres also blackberry platform. But it seems like they arent doing too well in the market. iOS and android are just too strong to compete with.

I just got an iPhone 5.... Had a Galaxy 3 before.
LOVED my Galaxy (but wanted an iphone for YEARS!).

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE my iphone. To me, it is wonderful. hands down easier to use. LOVE it.

Jailbreaking phones and/or side-loading apps, which then break the phone can void the warranty on many phones.

Actually, Blackberry is huge internationally. It's a Canadian company. So they've been concentrating on selling elsewhere, than here in the U.S. There new phones launched weeks/months earlier than here in the U.S.

According to this article below, the Blackberry has been outselling the Galaxy S4 in the UK, and the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4 in France.

Just like an Android fanboy. Love to spread lies about Apple. :rolleyes

Apple has the best service. My BIL's iPhone had water damage. Apple replaced it for free for a refurbish iPhone. I've heard numerous stories of that. If you do bust your iPhone outside of warranty, you can always pay just $199 for a refurbished one. My other friend busted the screen on his brand new S3 a couple days after he bought it. Samsung would do nothing but charge him full price to replace his screen. It was quite a few hundreds of dollars.

As my previous post said. I don't feel either phone is overall better than the other. They both have their pros and cons. Fanboys can't see this though. They ALWAYS love to say their phone brand is the best and the other one sucks. It's pathetic.

Thanks for pointing out that you've had zero problems with malware, that really makes me feel better.

Right now I go a day and I have to charge my iPhone when I get home. Actually, I wind up charging my iPhone during the day because of the amount of games I play on it, so I guess not much will change in that regards. :)

I use Lookout Mobile on my S3, and it scans anything I download, as well as acting as a "Find My Phone" if you misplace it. Wouldn't have a phone without it!! I have had my S3 for almost a year now, and before that I had a Droid X for 2 years - never one issue with malware. Just be sure of what apps you download and you should be fine.

Also, I have a spare battery for my S3. If I am not able to charge my phone while I'm out and about, I just swap out my batteries and keep on trucking. Can't do that with an iPhone! ;)

Yeah, that is why I questioned him. Waiting for an answer.

My one huge beef with the iphone is the screen size. If they don't come out with something larger in the Fall, I may end up going with an Android for a year or two. I can't even believe I am saying that as I am a huge Apple fan, but my mid-40s eyes can't do much more than read email and text with that tiny screen. I may even go for something like a Note phablet!

I was pretty anti-Android until my son got a Nexus 7. I have been playing with it and those things have come a LONG way......it is much easier to use than I had anticipated and I was even able to download all my itunes music on to it. I am VERY techie "dumb" and if I can figure it out, it must be pretty easy! :rotfl:'

Although it is still a bit glitchy and I need to go to the forums and ask some questions, but I downloaded what I could.

I had the Galaxy S2 and hated it. Then I went to a Windows phone (Nokia Lumia 920) which I loved, then broke SO I'm back to the iPhone.

I can't deny the ease and realibility of the iPhone.
