iPhone 5 or fancy cannon?

mom, the OP wanted a fancy cannon.

Ooh.. nice cannons!

iPhone5s make great cameras if you're not overly concerned about image quality. I'll put their photos up against my old 35mm point and shoot any day.

The only real downside is you have the same weaknesses with point and shoots - lack of zooming, wide angle issues, that sort of thing (yeah I know you can digital zoom but it's not quite the same thing)

Now personally, I'll take my Canon 6D on a black rapid strap. At home, when I'm going to King's Island I'll either stick with my iPhone or take my old Canon Elph because I'm always doing water rides or roller coasters. (and anymore I question if taking the canon elph is really worthwhile).

However you are forbidden from using an iPad to take photos.
I have spoken! :lmao:

I'd take your 6D too! :p

I think iphones take some decent photos under optimal lighting conditions. But probably not if you want to print them or do a lot more than look at them online. I had my kids email me some they took on their iphones and the difference in looking at them on my computer screen was remarkable.

I used to take my REAL camera all the time, but have found that my iphone 4s takes good pictures for snapshots.
If you have memory maker, and arent looking to get arty, I think its just one more thing to carry around.

I have looked at some of the cameras that people have posted about. :scared1:

Very expensive for me at least, over £500 for a point and shoot. Do any place rent cameras just for the day?

I don't have the 5, I have the 4s so I'm sure the camera on your phone is better, but my iPhone just can't take the kind of pictures I'd be happy with. Anything in low light or moving (like kids) just doesn't come out. I wouldn't go on vacation without my Canon, but it really depends on which one you have. I've bought (and returned) several point and shoot cameras because they weren't that much better then my phone.

Just bought a Canon Powershot SX700 with a 30x zoom and 16.1 megapixels. Its a point and shoot. So far the photos are great! Last trip I had a very tiny Canon Elf 300. The photos weren't as good as the SX700, but it was also easy to use and much lighter than the SX700. Both cameras take better photos than my iphone 5.

I agree... I don't think I've ever had a picture I took on my iPhone that I'd want to print.

OTOH I've got lots of friends that make 8x10 prints of family photos they took with a phone. They've got lousy lighting (flash in a darkened area) the color is awful, the background is practically nonexistent, etc; etc;... BUT the family members are in focus, properly lit (if a bit washed out) and they look happy. To my friends that's a good picture.... even though you can barely see the beautiful Merry Go Round behind them!

One other story, I go out to Las Vegas (more than I should!) and take some photos of the Bellagio Conservatory whenever I go out. It's a popular tourist destination so MANY people are there taking photos of themselves too and because I look like a "professional" with my "professional" camera. (I'm not) I get lots of people asking me to take pictures of them. I usually do a 1/4-1/2 shot of their heads/upper torso and try to get the scenery above them or to the side. 99% of the time people think it's an awesome shot. This one time though I had an older lady with a friend, took the shot and she asked me to retake it so I had their entire body in the shot. But because of their size and the aspect of their call phone camera (droid of some sort) all I could get in the shot was them with hardly any scenery. They liked that shot though! :lmao:

I used to carry a camera with me in the parks..Over the years and with PP or now MM I'm finding less of a reason to carry the big camera around. We get plenty of pics with the PP or now MM and I can take decent capture the moment type pics with my iphone 5. I enjoy myself more if I'm not worried about one more electronic.
To each their own though.

The best camera is the one you have with you they say. Choose either and I'm sure you'll not regret either the better photos or the lighter weight. If it's sunny the iphone really can take a killer outdoor shot. Indoors is where the canon will shine
