iPhone 4 and 5 Coming to Straight Talk...

No texting issues - I could/can text anyone. It's sending and receiving picture messages - those are MMS, I can iMessage pictures to other iPhones and receive pictures from other iPhones - my kids phone I email pictures to it *they receive it as a text I send it like so ~ 1801*******@tmomail.net *they're with tmobile. The *s are the phone number ~ 801 is our area code.

I'm running into some issues here although it really doesn't bother me. I can't imessage and I don't think group message is available. I have an AT&T Iphone4 using a ST Micro Sim. I also haven't figured out how to Facetime. I am still running an old version of IOS so I don't know if updating that will address any of these issues. Regardless, I really just wanted to be able to make calls, text, and check email so I am more than happy given the price.

I'll give you another issue, not significant for 99% of customers (made up number). A regular cell phone serviced directly by one of the carriers will generally "roam" if you're in an area where your carrier doesn't have coverage. Not only will you "roam" on another network but almost none of the plans charge for roaming. Sometimes people say "no roaming" when they mean no roaming charges.

Most of the pre-paid cell phone companies don't roam. That means if you're in an area not covered by Sprint (or whatever carrier you're on) you won't get coverage.

Sprint doesn't have a great nationwide network. That could be an issue for people who can get Sprint coverage where they live but sometimes drive through areas with holes in coverage.

I can't group message either... that's on the 4S, pretty sure I could with the 3G *still with Straight Talk* I have the Tango app, works like FaceTime - I think I can FT, but DBF and I *he's a AT&T iPhone user* prefer Tango.

I hope this is true! I have an iPhone 3GS on ST network and can group message, but can only share photos with other iphone users. Not a big deal. Definitely not one I'm willing to pay another $40 a month or more for! I've been using ST for about 3 years and have always been happy with the amount I pay and the service I get. I would do better if I could use a Verizon tower in my area now since AT&T doesn't have the best service here, but it works well enough for my iPhone habit (DH has one through work on Verizon that I played with constantly before getting my own) and as my main phone (no landline).

Well that explains it. It doesnt sound like the ST plan is as cheap as VM. How many talk minutes do you get with the unlimited plan?

Agreed -- Sprint, and their sister brands Virgin and Boost Mobile (as well as others, such as Cricket Wireless) are best-served in large cities, and towns close to an interstate highway.

ST - unlimited talk minutes
VM - 300 talk minutes
VM has an unlimited talk everything plan for $45/ month. But does ST have unlimited data with a specified talk time for $35/month? That is what I was asking.....:rolleyes1

Does anyone know if means I could cancel my current contract with VZ and move my iPhone 5 to ST? (With cancellation fee of course.) Has anyone ported their number to ST? How involved was that?

I ported my number from T Mobile to ST. It was somewhat involved - I had to provide them with my T Mobile username and password! I guess so they could verify the number was really mine.

I did it a couple of years ago with Tracfone (same company as ST) -- it's easy...

When setting-up your account at the ST website, you will be presented with the opportunity to "port" your exisiting number to ST -- take it.

Once the port is complete (within a few hours), you should get a text message on your ST phone that it is now working (and your VZW phone simply will no longer work).

You will then receive a final bill from VZW, which will include your early termination fee.

Pretty simple!

No. They have a $30 plan with 1000 minutes talk, 1000 text or picture messages and a data limit of 30mb.

I don't know if they'll even activate a smartphone on the $30 plan.

I think your early termination fee is at least $350. I don't think ST lets you bring your own phone onto the VZ network. I think the VZ phone is unlocked for GSM. You might be able to use their bring your own phone program and use your phone on the T Mobile.

Yes I know VZ uses CDMA not GSM. Current iPhones can do both. That's how VZ customers can use their VZ iPhones in Europe. Just need to insert a microSIM card.

edited to make a change. I think bring your own plan uses the T-Mobile network.

Thank you :thumbsup2 One last question does ST have t-mobile sim cards for that plan you just mentioned? I have a pink razor I would love to use as just a phone and text. Thanks for all of the info.

lewis: is that 1000 minutes plus + 1000 texts? = 2000 or ?

The $30 plan is for 1000 minutes PLUS 1000 texts and 30 meg data

The $45 plan is "unlimited" all - you need this plan for a smartphone or a bring your own phone (sim card)

ALL plans are PLUS TAX. Here in Maine I pay just over $48 for the "unlimited" plan

I was billed exactly $45 for my Unlimited Plan--no tax. I bought it from the ST website. Next month I plan to buy the 365 day plan which works out to $41.25/month.
