iPads on rides

Maybe a silly question but I understand that iPads or lights from camera are not allowed on rides. I was recently on an attraction that was in the dark and a kid about 10 was using his iPad. Are they allowe. Kind of ruined the experience.

So frustrating! I find the screen brightness to be the biggest issue. People don't realize they can turn the screen brightness down to very low and it doesn't impact their photos (which won't turn out in the dark anyway...).

Craig from the DIS Unplugged podcast in a recent episdoe was just talking about an iPad with the screen brightness up and the sound on and I think it was on Pirates.

Some people forget that other people are around them too.

My mother-in-law is like that. That and sound. She apparently doesn't realize you can turn the keyboard sound off so others don't have to hear the constant click noise when you're typing, that you can turn the brightness down, etc.

"OH! I'm so sorry I knocked your iPad into the water, those cannon going off just really scared me and I jumped!"

This is such a pet peeve of mine! The worst for us on our last trip was during Festival of the Lion King. Even if you are allowed to take pictures, they're probably going to be terrible so just enjoy the moment! You're paying all that money to be at the park and ride the rides, but then you spend most of the ride messing around with a phone to take video and pictures that you probably are hardly ever going to look at again...I don't get it.

And I don't mean that people shouldn't take pictures while they're at the parks, but I don't think a ride or show environment is generally conducive to good photos (you're moving, the lighting is weird, etc etc) and it's so very disruptive to the people around you.

There’s a picture on Pirates now???
It was added in 2017 I believe. When the skull was brought back they used that with a flash to hide the photography flash.

We have one from our 2017 trip but that's the only one that showed up and I know it's hit or miss for people.

I feel this way about concerts too. People are always trying to take videos of shows, but the quality is terrible. Nobody wants to watch a grainy video of some concert where you can't really hear the music, your video is shaky, and there's all kinds of background noise. You don't enjoy the moment when you're so worried about trying to capture the moment.

Not to mention the iPads are huge. Ugh, lol.

That is why I love Prince may he RIP. But when you saw him in concert he had no camera and cellphone rule. You just enjoyed the song. Then he had one song where he said, "okay you guys can take out your camera and phones for this song." And he meant for that song. Because after that security was back looking for that and they would kick you out after one warning.

You know I guess I've grown so tired of rude people that I no longer just sit back and grin and bare it. Back when my kids were in high school band and concerts it would drive my NUTS when people would get up and walk out or walk in while they kids were playing. I spoke with the Band Director several times and he finally started to print a request in every program and, most of all, he'd ask parents to volunteer to act as ushers. I was happy to help.

That same attitude goes for Disney, if you see something, say something. We had some guy with his cell phone, on max bright trying to film Pirates. I politly asked he if he could turn it down or turn it off so we could enjoy the ride. I laughed when his wife elbowed him and said, "See I told you." Come on people think of others, stop being so self-absorbed. /RANT-OFF

The last time we rode Space, there was a guy right behind me in the car who took a video with his phone- with flash on- through the entire ride, start to finish. It was so bright and illuminated the tracks and the whole ride around us so much that at first I thought they had turned the lights on due to some mechanical issue but no, it was some random donkey with a cell phone that had to ruin the ride for every single person around them.

Just yell loudly "no lights"
usually gets the message across.
I was with my wife and took a more passive aggressive approach once. It was at night and it was a continuous light from some massive phablet turned all the way up, but had a high powered speedlight with me (I use it in daylight only to lift shadows on faces) and while pulling out my camera I did a full power test dump directly at the camera on the phablet. He got the point pretty quickly.

By the by, it's totally possible to get good photos in Festival of the Lion King and on dark rides, it's just not easy to do so, and to do so you have to not use a flash. These were with an 85mm lens wide open at f/1.8. I was dragging the shutter a bit to get a sense of motion, but I had more than enough headroom to completely stop the motion blur.

I have a song I like to sing when people are rudely flash/recording during a dark ride. It goes something like this:

"Oh, when the idiots get home and they hear my song about how they are so rude and stupid and selfish, rude and stupid and selfish,
and it's recorded throughout their video, oh I hope they enjoy it!" sung in a very annoying, sing-song way ;)

For me, the issue with people not thinking about the others around them extends to talking on rides. Like I get that every once in a while you're going to exclaim at something, or laugh, or point something out to someone in your party, or yell at your friend who's in the fake driver's seat because they've clearly driven you down the wrong path. That's fine, that's not what I'm mad about. What did annoy the heck out of me was the one and only time I had a chance to ride N'avi River Journey on my last trip, someone in the boat with me narrated every single moment of it to their child. "Look! It's an Avatar-Bird! Look at that, that's called an Avatar-Lizard!" I kid you not, they were acting like they were teaching their kid the name of every species on the ride...but since they didn't know any of the names, every single one was "an Avatar-fill-in-the-blank."

As to the original topic, I remember a CM using the loudspeaker system on PotC to tell someone to turn off camera lighting one time I rode it. I think it's one of those things that's against the rules, but whether a CM enforces it depends on whether the CMs on duty have the energy and drive to deal with it.

I'm a big believer in telling CMs after this and firmly requesting to redo the ride (without an hour wait) after someone else is allowed to ruin it. Disney will only enforce rules if violations are a problem for them.

I am not comfortable with confronting a stranger, even very politely. You just never know how a stranger would react. That should not be a guest's responsibilty, anyway.
