I'm going to take my iPad with me on my next trip to WDW. Can I just send it through the x-ray machine inside my carry on bag or do they make you take them out?

On our last two trips Erin never had to take her iPad out of her purse.

I asked on my most recent flight, and the TSA guy said "it's not a laptop, so it doesn't come out".

We were told twice at two different airports a couple weeks ago to take the Ipad out of my purse. So who knows the rules are always changing every time we fly.

I've traveled with my iPad through many different airports (all US) over the last year and have never had to take it out of my purse. Most airports have signs saying iPads and iPhone do not need to be taken out of bags.

We've found that experiences at differing airports (or even the same airport with different agents) will not be the same. Having said that, almost all the time you do not have to take an iPad out of the bag when going through security. However, of the TSA agent says otherwise...you know the drill.

The default is that you do not have to take it out. From www.tsa.gov:

Laptop computers, full-size video game consoles, CPAP machines, full-size DVD players, and video cameras that use video cassettes must be removed from their carrying cases and submitted separately for x-ray screening. Small and portable electronic items (iPods, iPads, cell phones, etc.) do not need to be removed from their carrying cases.

The screening agent can always ask you to take it out for further screening. But, don't pull it out unless you are asked to do so.

Yesterday at MCO, I had to take my iPad out of my bag. There was a TSA agent yelling instructions at everyone in line: "If it is the size of an iPad or bigger, it needs to come out and be placed in a tray by itself". YMMV.

The rules haven't changed. iPads can stay in bags. The problem is TSA agents who don't know their own rules.
