I mentioned to DS that I wanted to get him a Kindle Fire for Christmas, but he said he prefers an Ipad. I asked him what the difference was and he looked at me like I had 3 heads.

So..... Tell me about Ipads. What makes the "the best". I have a Kindle Fire (the original one). What is the difference between the two? Does the IPad get 3G and Wifi?

I am obviously electronic illiterate, LOL.

I am in the same boat...My 13 y/o has to tell me what is new with electronics.

I had an iapd---they have 4 generation of them now.
You can get wifi, 3g and I am not sure what the latest has.

I have the ipad 2 and it has wifi,, so If I go somewhere with a free wifi connection, I am in....I also my internet or hot spot at home to use it.

TONS of apps and you can watch ABC, CBS shows, blockbuster and netflix on them.
You can email too, facetime CHAT,
No disk drive though......but I still love it.

My dd want a FIRE,too.

iPads are tablet computers which don't replace a laptop, but are fine for most people's uses. You can even pair them with a physical keyboard if needed.

It's going to depend on which system you are invested in as far as apps. The iPad App Store has thousands upon thousands of apps. The system is considered a "walled garden" by many since you cannot load apps from other sources( unless you jailbreak the iPad but that's another story;)) but the good thing is that these apps tend to be stable, since Apple has to approve them. There are games, productivity apps, educational apps, photography apps, the list goes on.

iPads are also great for media such as tv shows and movies.

Kindle fire is a tablet and it's good too but that tends to be more of a reader's tablet. It's cheaper than the iPad.

You can get older models of iPads refurbished through Apple. They also just came out with the IPad Mini. It's smaller than the regular one and slightly cheaper. It starts at 16GB WiFi for $329. You can always tether the iPad to a phone or portable hotspot when wifi isn't available.

Hope this helps. I have both items but I use the iPad more for Internet, media and games and the Kindle Fire for reading first and the other stuff in a pinch.

For some, the kindle is enough...for others, it isn't. It really depends on how the user intends to utilize the device. If he said he would rather have an iPad then I would get that. For my husband, the kindle wouldn't do what he needed. Here are some of the ways that DH uses his iPad...
-to teach on Sundays...there is an app that allows him to create word docs
-to surf the internet
-for email
-for travel he loads movies onto it and watches on the plane
-to Skype/Facetime which allows us to talk to each other while he is gone
-for music
-books/magazine downloads
-games

There are many other uses, but this some of the main things that he uses it for. I have one as well and use it way more than I ever thought I would. My favorite feature is the iCloud which syncs all my devices. When I take a picture on my iPhone, it transmits a copy of that photo to my iPad and my home computer. I never have to download anything because it is already there. It does the same with any event that I add to my calendar. I also utilize many of the travel apps.
We really love our iPads and I would not ever consider getting anything else.

I've never tried the Kindle, but I know the iPad integrates perfectly with your Mac. I believe the iPad probably has a bigger selection of apps. It is made with iTunes in mind so if you have a lot of playlists and stuff they will stay perfectly intact.

As far as the 3G and WIFI...they are all WIFI, but some are 3G capable in addition to that, but they cost more to begin with and you have to pay to use the 3G.

I have an Ipad but I didn't know that you can watch ABC and CBS. How do you do that?

Thanks

Most of the networks have free apps you can get on the App Store (and many other non-network media apps with limited content). Be aware, it's not live and the network apps only have a limited selection of shows and not entire past seasons of things like you might find on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

So the 3g is not typical? You need to pay extra. But the wifi is typical and included in all.

He has an ipod touch, which he can do a lot of stuff on already. I can do just about all that was mentioned on my Kindle.

What is considered a "good deal" for an ipad? Are the smaller ones supposed to be better, or just newer? Anyone want to help me on my task??

:)

And thanks everyone for the info!!

Speaking of watching television on an iPad, we subscribe to HBO, so we have access to the free HBO GO app. ALL the movies that are being shown on HBO that month are there and a huge backlog of their shows (i.e., Boardwalk Empire, Curb Your Enthusiasm, SATC, etc). I love that!

If your house is Android, then I would stay with the Kindle Fire. If you use apple products (mac computer, iphone, etc), then I would invest in the ipad. We have both in my house, and honestly, the Kindle just doesn't do what I like. I gave it to my daughter who uses it for reading books and some games. We will probably sell it and she will get my ipad2 and I will get the newer generation later down the road. :)

I use my ipad for work to sign in to to my remote desk top and vpn access. It is a mini computer that just doesn't print. :)

There's yet another choice--in fact many other choices--not just Kindle or iPad.

I have a Nexus 7--the Google 7" tablet, which is made by Asus. It's way better than the Kindle Fire, faster, better interface, runs the latest version of android, it's not amazon-specific, and it's lighter than the Kindle Fire. My friend who has a KF picked up my N7 and couldn't believe how light it was. If you have gmail and use a lot of Google services, they're seamlessly integrated into the tablet. The only flaw with the N7 (to me) is that it has only a front-facing camera, so it's not great for taking pictures. BTW, although the iPad2 has a rear-facing camera, the pictures it takes are substandard. The iPhone has a far superior camera.

Google's coming out next week (the 13th) with a 10" android-based tablet that's going to be competitive with the iPad--and cheaper.

If you want a tablet, you're not stuck with a choice between iPad and Kindle. There are lots of other choices out there. And there are huge numbers of apps for android devices. Look at the Google Play store and compare with the Apple App store.

Of course, if you have an Apple computer at home and an iPhone, you'll probably want an iPad, since you'll want to have all Apple devices. And, I hate to say this, but if your DS is enamored of iPad, he may be disappointed with something else, even if it's better in many ways. My DH (who's a longtime Mac user) got an iPad and ended up returning it. He much prefers my N7, but he wanted a larger screen, so he plans to get the N10 when it comes out next week.

BTW, all you need is a printer with wireless capability, and you can print off any tablet, although I must mention that if you're printing off an iPad, you have to purchase an app. I'm not saying that printing's fun or easy, but it can be done. If you have a new Cloud-based printer, then it's easy. But for those of us with antique printers (mine's 3 years old!), it's a bit funky, because even though my printer has wireless, my desktop computer has to be on in order for me to be able to print something from my tablet. For the person who asked for printer suggestions, get a Cloud-based printer. If Canon makes one, I'd go with that. The print quality on their printers is excellent.

But a tablet (iPad, N7, KF, whatever) is no substitute for a desktop/laptop/etc. For one thing, it's not enjoyable to type on one of these devices if you're a good touch-typist. My 100+ wpm speed on an old-fashioned keyboard is reduced to maybe 30 wpm on my N7 and, having typed on an iPad as well, it's no faster there.

I use my N7 for email, web access, making notes, reading (on a Kindle app, which, btw, you can get for any tablet, not just a Kindle tablet), and some entertainments. I probably would never watch a movie on it, since it seems small to me for that purpose. The only advantage (if it is an advantage) of the KF over the N7 is that you can use the free book rentals on Amazon Prime, which service is available only to Kindle owners, although if Amazon wakes up, they'll start offering the services to non-Kindle owners, since they're losing a HUGE market there.

Did that help or did I just confuse you further? :goodvibes

You are lucky!! I need to get a wireless printer. Any suggestions? :)

Sorry I don't have any real advice regarding purchasing a compatible printer, I just bought the second cheapest wireless one at Best Buy and it ended up being great for my needs. I have an Epson printer that I purchased before I even had the iPad. I run a small online business (etsy shop) and my laptop died shortly after I received the Ipad. I learned really quickly what I could get the iPad to do and what I couldn't. Doing most of my work, and printing MOST things weren't a problem, the main drawback I found that hindered me was I couldn't print international shipping labels because for whatever reason, they were all done with Flash. Even on sites (Stamps.com, Pay Pal) that I had no problems with domestic shipping.

My favorite Ipad accessory it this little thing. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A/apple-ipad-camera-connection-kit?fnode=3a

It lets me take pictures off my camera's memory card and download them onto my ipad. I loved using it on our Disney trip to back up our photos every day.

I am already confused, LOL.

I facebook chatted with my younger brother who used to work the help desk at Apple and knows the ins and outs.

He said that an ipad 2 16gb should be plenty. But now I am looking at the new ipod mini and it is about the same size as a kindle and seems to be a bit better. As well as $70 cheaper.

I know it will probably come down to me asking DS which one he prefers.

But can anybody compare the ipad mini and ipad2 for me who has used them?

Pretty please??? He will use it for skype, games, music, internet.

My brother said that if he will use it for skype he would probably want the bigger screen.

I want to get things squared away before Black Friday. I don't want to have to search the world to find my son's gift.

I have a Kodak wireless printer, what do I need to do to be able to print from my iPad? Where can I go to find out, I would love to not have to drag out my laptop when I just need to print one page of something when I'm already on my iPad.

You say the Kindle won't do what he needs, but doesn't it do the above (except maybe the word doc app)?

We are planning to get DD a Kindle Fire HD for Christmas and I believe that it will be sufficient for her (she did not ask for an iPad), but I want to make sure that I'm not completely missing something.

DH, on the other hand, is buying an iPad but he will be using it for work and also wants the bigger screen

I had an iPad2 for a couple of months, it was a 32G, 16G wasn't enough for me, although it may be enough for your son. Mine slid off onto the floor and the screen spidered, so when I took it in to Best Buy, all of the 2's were gone and they gave me a 3, which I haven't seen much difference in.

I haven't seen the iPad mini in person (at least I don't think that's what I saw at Best Buy), but if it's the same size as the Kindle Fire, it would be plenty large enough for Skye.

I am looking at the Kindle Fire HD for Dh, because he is too rough on stuff for me to pay that much for an iPad and he can use mine when he is at home.

Probably the easies thing to do is Google "how do I print from an iPad" Something will come up. That's my go-to source for how to do anything on my phone/computer lol.

There is no app that I ever had to purchase to print with my wireless printer. If I want to print from my iPad, I touch the box with the arrow coming out (don't know how else to explain) An option box pops up (mail, twitter, bookmark, etc.) and I press Print. It searches for printers and finds my printer over the wifi network.

Anyway, that is how it works for me, but if I were you, I would google so you can try other things, etc.,
