i have only found that there is a charge per minute of Internet. Can't I use my smartphone and my plan for Internet to check in? I will have my pup at the kennel and would like to be reached in case of emergency. Plus I am going to worry about him...they have offered to send pictures and updates which will make me happier! I also have my house up for sale! So if I could at least check emails, I would be fine.

When in port you can use your internet and phone at whatever your rates are. Onboard you have their internet. If you are using their app you can talk to others on the ship etc. but to have connection to outside world you'll need this

They have several internet packages.

The costs for internet use is by the MB, not minutes. There are various packages available. If you go here:

There is onboard internet with packages by bandwidth used. Sign up the first day and you get a 50 Mb package for free, above that varies and has been posted by others.

Yep.... other cruise lines charge by the minute.... DCL's mb policy means I can leave my phone on wifi to email other family members. Great system. Just need to avoid large photo attachments or video.

And also turn off any automatic updating of apps...that'll chew through your purchased bandwidth in a heartbeat!

While you are at sea, your phone won't be able to connect to your usual service -- no cell towers in the middle of the ocean! That's why you have to buy a package from Disney to connect.

The last time I went on the cruise, I went to the Guest Services Internet person and had him help me make sure all of the things that would eat up the package megabits was turned off. They were very good about helping and at one time, something happened and it used up in like 1 minute...they reset it for me and fixed whatever was causing it to happen. I bought it only so that I could text my husband to check in to be sure things were okay at home.

Yep and "push". It cost us 20$ US to realize it... I opened my iPad, sent one e-mail and my whole package was gone!

Wow... I did not know that they could do that. I should have complained!

Yes, me too....my free 50mb was gone as soon as I pulled up internet for first time after getting it. I thought I'd followed the directions to turn everything off right but apparently not.

I just found out my cell Phone provider (T-Mobile) allows texts and data usage in 140 + countries for no extra fee. Could look to see if yours does at the ports

I have looked before but do not know how to turn off automatic updates.

Depends on what phone you have (different for iPhone and Android). Just Google "turn off automatic updates for [your phone]" and you'll find instructions.
