Internet Trolls

Every so often it is good to remind ourselves, that, just like email viruses, Internet trolls are a part of the 'Net world'. This dissertation, (link below) a good writeup and explanation of them, is about the best and simplest I have seen. I have posted it here on the CB a number of times over the years. If you are unaware of what a Net troll is, take a moment or two and be aware..........

I disagree with this one.

An Internet "troll" is a person who delights in sowing ******* on the Internet. He (and it is usually he) tries to start arguments and upset people.

After seeing a bunch of things happen around here and there over the years, it seems like when the claws get sharpened it gets down right dirtier.

Thanks Dan. The good thing about trolls is, they're easily identified. The vast majority of people here on the DIS are such wonderful, kind, fun and NORMAL people. You can spot a troll around here in an instant. And yes, ignoring them is always the way to go.

Fortunately we have only been all out attacked by trolls a few times over the years. The moderators and webmasters work really hard to keep this a "troll free zone"
I have to agree with almost everything in Dan's link......
Not everyone will always agree with what we don't allow to be posted but we will keep this a friendly site.

Thanks for posting that link. That is very useful information and I learned a lot from reading it. I read the Yahoo! message boards sometimes and that place is just inundated with trolls. It's SO frustrating because every decent or normal coversation is just plagued with people who are there to cause trouble. I feel like I have a much better understanding for reading that article.

The freedom of speech argument is indeed one that I hear a lot. I post at two other message boards besides this one. One of them has a moderator but it takes a LOT to get action...the people on the board scream "freedom of speech" whenever the mod wants to take action on a thread. We see name calling, dirty pics being posted, and really mean and hurtful comments all the time. On the other board, the moderator is a bit extreme. A minor disagreement results on a thread being closed. The Dis board is a nice inbetween. I personally prefer some level of moderation...even if sometimes a thread closes prematurely. I cringe when I see some of the things people say to one another on that other board...like your article states, they don't seem to realize they are talking to real people who are going to get hurt.

Anyway, I very much appreciate that link and I'll be posting it elseware so other people can get that information.
