I know that you have to pay for internet access at Disney, but has anyone been able to do that with an Ipod Touch? I wasn't sure if the internet connection was wireless or just regular high speed. Also, how much is it? Thank you!

If you can use your unit AWAY from Wi-Fi areas (such as in the car) you won't be using any of Disney's connections at all.

You will be using your wireless carrier's signal (which does work in WDW parks.)

With an Iphone, you don't have to be in a Wi-Fi area to access the internet, but with a Touch you do, so that's why I was unsure. I didn't know if in the resort rooms and around the property, the internet access is wireless, or you have to have an ethernet cable to connect, which I couldn't do with a Touch.

There is wireless available in most resorts (Common Areas) at WDW.

It costs $9.95 per day (24 continuous hours,) however.

Onsite WI-FI

Wi-Fi is offered at select Disney Resorts and throughout areas of Wide World of Sports. If you have a Wi-Fi enabled laptop or PDA, you can access the internet from common areas at the resort.

Smart City is the service provider and offers 24 hour technical support. They can be reached by calling 407-938-HELP

Requirements: Wireless Interface Card (WIC) which can be purchased in the resort's business center
Price: $4.99 for the first 60 minutes or $9.95 for 24 contigious hours
Billing: Smart City bills the user via a secure credit card transaction thru the internet connection

that's incorrect if I read it correctly.

all Disney rooms have broadband via ethernet. not wifi. not unless you bring a wifi router.

wifi is only available in common areas of the convention resorts. not free.

there is no free wifi on site except for the wide world of sports and possibly by big river grille.

you'll find wifi networks in the parks but they're for administrative and photopass use, you won't be able to join them.

so the long and short of it is anything that uses cellular service (or EDGE or GPRS or that sort of thing) will work in the parks, such as an iPhone. but something that relies on WiFi like an iPod will not.

I should be able to use my Blackberry from ATT though while onsite to access the DIS? We are there for 16 nights and I can't imagine paying for internet access for that long, but I'm hoping I can at least get my daily fix and can post things.

Not every site works well on my Blackberry, but the DIS worked fine while driving home from Tennessee last week. Sure was nice to read the DIS while driving.

I'm on Verizon, so I don't know how good the AT&T service is around WDW property, but there is definitely service, and you will be able to use your existing cellular web service there. Of course, inside most of the attraction buildings, the steel framework blocks the signal, but outdoors you should have pretty clear reception.

Bear in mind that you do NOT have to enable the in-room internet connection for the duration of your stay. You enable it one 24-hour period at a time, so if you're there for 16 days, you could enable it every 3 or 4 days instead of every day. If you plan ahead a little, you can enable it at, say, 6pm one night, and use it the next night up to 6pm.

I have a Touch, and the in room connections are wired. So, since we both need laptop access for business, we use a wireless router and create a wireless network in our room. I can use the Touch from that network. With the router, we pay only once for the connection and all devices can use it.

Hey, now that's a good idea. :) I have to bring my laptop anyway, so that I can have a place to transfer my digital camera pics, so that woulld work for me. That way, DD and I could check our emails at the same time. We both have a Touch, and I would rather use that than my laptop anyway. Thank you for the suggestion! Okay, a silly question--I've only used a wireless connection on my laptop at home, so when I go to used the wired connection in the resort room, do they provide the cable or is that something I need to bring?

just to point it out, as PP and I mentioned earlier, you would have to bring a wifi router from home and hook it up to provide service to the iPod in the room.

an ethernet cable is provided in the room. either off a 'spool' or in a bag hanging in the closet area depending on the resort.

I appreciate you letting me know the cable is provided. I can probably get the wifi router going, too, since I set mine up at home. :) Thank you all for the helplful info. :)

I used my iPhone for internet access last week and loved it. I had good reception at my resort and in most areas of the parks. It was a great way to occupy my time while in some of the longer ques, waiting for my family to finish rides or, especially, waiting out some of the heavier rain storms. There were some inside ques that had poor reception, the one that comes to mind is Toy Story Mania.

If you are really tech savvy, you shouldn't need to bring a router. You can set up the wireless on your laptop to run in Ad-Hoc mode, which essentially will let your laptop act as a router. Then bridge that connection to your wired ethernet connection, and voila! Any device that can connect Ad-Hoc to your laptop should be able to get on the internet. : ) However, this is way over most peoples abilities and patience level while on vacation. You can pick up portable wireless routers specifically for travelers who like to have wireless in the room, but only have the hard wire. Check out travel stores and the like to see some of the choices.

and on the question of AT&T coverage in the parks, it is excellent. all of WDW is covered by the AT&T 3G high speed network. I did have trouble with coverage deep inside some attractions and deep inside some hotels, but that is to be expected.

I don't believe you are correct. Disney does have Wifi available in their hotel rooms (atleast the ones I've stayed in) and I've connected via my laptop wirelessly, no router needed.

The Ipod Touch works like a laptop, as long as a Wifi connection is available and you don't mind forking out the money for the connection, you can connect to the internet without a router.

We tried to connect with our iPod touch this past May and had no luck. We stumbled across a few wifi connections but they were all locked. I was a little disappointed, we had wanted to use it to check the weather and such.

the internet connection is not free (except if you are a DVC member staying at a DVC resort - but you still have to check your bill to make sure you were not charged) - and in room at most resorts anyway, the connection is only wired (you might see some other wireless networks, but they probably are other guests or maybe some common area spillover if you are close enough) - although there is a connection or cord in most rooms we always travel with our own anyway - to connect the router to your computer you might need to use two cables, one from the internet source to your router and the other from the router to the laptop (at least to configure the router and create your network and sign on to the hotel service)

disney has wifi at its resorts in DLR (and free too) but not WDW. i'm correct on this. if you're lucky, you'll come across someone else's unsecured wifi router. and i've heard big river grill can be picked up somewhere in BCV if I'm not mistaken.

otherwise it's all wired.
