Confession time: I am a paper hoarder. I hoard paper. LOL

I hoard so much paper that digging through it yesterday I found spending details from our past trips going back a little more than 20 years.

What's interesting about it is that first ten years BDVC (before dvc LOL) we spent quite a bit more on our trips and it was mostly at moderate resorts like Dixie Landings and Carribbean Beach. This was also WITH various discounts.
Looking at the numbers, I'd say without a doubt we are spending significantly less to vacation at WDW than we used to!

Today I am an extra happy DVC owner!

Another interesting discovery was our flight costs from back then. I guess I really need to stop complaining about the current prices of airfares. We paid less for an upcoming trip than we paid in a half dozen or so prior trips!

Yep. If you posted that on the Transportation forum, the main people over there would love you. :goodvibes

I'm chicken cuz I don't wanna start anything..........and I KNOW this would do it. LOL LOL

(Plus I'll likely STILL complain about the flight prices. It's just what I do, I'm such a cheapo. LOL)

LOL, well I have to agree that I think our airfare from MSP to MCO has remained about the same for at least the last 20 years. We always feel it's a "deal" if we get it for less than $250/person.

Oh no I'm serious, they would actually love you! I don't mean it in a sarcastic way at all.

I remember the approximate cost to get me, just me, on TWA (in a middle of the middle row seat) from San Francisco to and from DC when I was in 8th grade, so the early 80s. It was just a little bit UNDER what it's costing my family of three to get from Seattle to and from Orlando.

My wallet complains when I book airfare, but when I think about what it COULD be, if inflation held sway with airfare, I am GLAD to plunk down today's costs.

(OK not all of today's airline costs...I was looking on Virgin America and to fly out to Orlando would be $129 on our date, one way per person, and I would take that over the refundable fare for the same seat, which was $920 last I looked...I have some sense of "that's too much" LOL)

two questions:

Did you factor in the initial purchase cost of DVC in your comparison?

When you say you are spending less, is that based on average per trip or a general average per year? In other words, your per trip costs might be down, but has your frequency gone up?

I like all the positive feelings this thread is letting off....

Wow, that's really interesting. And a great way of looking at it... now go get to cleanin'!

As for air travel, it was more expensive back then as it was a privilege to fly (not the crazy 60 take-offs a minute like it is now) and the reason why people put on their Sunday best when getting on the plane. Wish I had been around to see that.

Isn't less just less? :confused3
Less based on an average per trip is the same as less averaged out per year. Isn't it? My numbers come out lower either way I figure it.

Yes, we're spending far less in all areas of our vacation. Less on lodging, significantly less on food, and less in general because we know we'll be back so we're in no hurry to buy everything we see and want.
Per trip cost is down not quite half, which surprised me and we don't go any more often than we used to. We live too far away to make extra trips.

Well, less is less, but here's what I think PP meant by figuring in the initial DVC cost:

To figure how much lodging cost me on a single DVC trip, I have taken the total initial cost of my contract and divided it by the total number of points I expect to receive during the entire lifetime of the contract. To that, I add that year's membership fee/per point, and I get the total cost per point for that year. Then, simply multiply this cost per point by the number of points required for the stay.

The cost works out to be about the cost of a moderate for better accomodations.

I'm sure a CPA could point out a number of things wrong with that figuring, but it works for me.

I do remember flying to DL in 1970 (I was 12) in my Sunday best - a lavender dress, nylons, and my patent leather shoes. We stayed across from DL and we got there, but some of our luggage didn't. We couldn't wait until the next day to go to the park, so we convinced my mom and dad to take us in our good clothes. I would hate to think what our family of 5 paid to get there.

Now, we just fly from Pittsburgh to Orlando and usually get there in 2 hours on a direct flight. And I ALWAYS fly in my comfy jeans and tee or sweats.

Terri

I think for us the cost has gone up only because we take 2 to 4 trips per year. We use to only go once a year before DVC, but believe me I AM NOT COMPLAINING.
