I just read this and I was also thinking about this since last night when our Country announced again that we may get 'hit" this week by Terriorists. I do not worry too much and I intend to go about my daily business as usual. What does everyone think? The only thing that I sort of laughed about was that they mentioned on CNN last night to stock up on Duct Tape and Plastic Sheeting! Who owns stock in those companies????

Code Orange at Disneyland/World
Commentary by Andres Martinez for The New York Times

Having security guards search through visitors' belongings at the entrance to his beloved park could not have been part of Walt Disney's idea of a "big, big beautiful tomorrow" when he opened Disneyland in 1955. But ever since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, that's become as much a part of the Disney experience as standing in line for the Pirates of the Caribbean. And after Tom Ridge decreed a heightened state of alert (Code Orange) last week, Disney's security was ratcheted up even further.

Just as the World Trade Center was an international symbol of American commerce, Disney's twin resorts in California and Florida are iconic monuments to American leisure. The idea that they may become a target has therefore been bandied about ever since Sept. 11, and attendance at the parks serves as a proxy index of Americans' confidence in their own security.

The parks were deserted in the aftermath of the attacks. But lately, without yet reaching their former levels, the number of visitors had been picking up. Disney was especially heartened to see the number of foreign visitors spike significantly late last year.

Now there are worries that talk of war with Iraq will trigger a "double dip" in attendance figures. The last gulf war proved devastating to the travel industry, and the specter of a rerun, combined with a more palpable fear of terrorist retaliations, has everyone from the airlines to Las Vegas casino operators worried sick. Disney is already seeing weaker advance bookings.

Inside the park, mentioning terrorism seems mean, and almost impolite, in a world so determinedly dedicated to innocent escapism and perfect order. One of the attendants at the entrance to the Haunted Mansion gave me a blank stare when I asked about the real-life horrors possibly lurking behind that Code Orange. "I thought the air was cleaner now, and that we didn't have to worry about that ozone stuff anymore," he said.

An utterly unscientific poll of 11 groups of visitors showed that all but two were aware of the federal government's call for stepped-up vigilance, although not everyone got the colors straight. The two families that had missed the news were Japanese. "Should we go home now?" one man inquired.

As he enjoyed the fireworks show in Fantasyland, Will Fletcher of Houston said he wouldn't let the Code Orange news curtail his fun, though he does try now to be more perceptive of his surroundings. "As we were driving up," he said, "we were talking about how this is the perfect place to forget all your troubles, but then I had this chilling realization that that's one reason it would be an ideal target for someone intent on wreaking total havoc."

Yet he came, as well he should. It isn't just, as statisticians are quick to point out, that travel is almost always safer than your daily routine, even factoring in the possibility of an attack. Average citizens who have never found a specific mission in the war against terrorism can show their solidarity only by embracing the ordinary. The most intolerable form of havoc would be a nation paralyzed by fear, one in which there are no lines to ride the Pirates of the Caribbean.

We're traveling and no terrorist will stop our family vacation.
But to buy stocks in duct tape and plastic sheeting is baffling...
I'd think they'd recommend buying stocks in pharmaceuticals developing vaccines against biological warfare and manufacturers of protective equipment...

I think its all a bunch of Hooey! We will not stop our plans for living. That plan includes travelling. I think the terrorists biggest weapon at this time is fear, which I will not cave into.
Personally I think its scarier driving on the Long Island Expressway!

When I told my husband about the plastic and duct tape he laughed(having been in the military) he said it would already be too late before you got the chance to put it on the windows in an attack anyway and to not worry about it.

They were showing a segment on Good Morning America where a guy went into a home in CT and demonstrated the proper way to seal off a room and everything. He showed how that particular family should go into their laundry room where they would take their pre-cut plastic sheets and seal off the door, vents, light switches and plug the dryer vent. Then listen to their portable radio until the cloud (I caught this in the middle of the segment so I assume he means radioactive cloud or something) has passed. Here's a link to the info of their website:

Not sure how I feel about doing this for our family, but the threat won't stop me from going about my *normal* life.

The fact that the president goes on air month after month rasing the spectre of a new attack is a victory for the terrorists. People in much of the third world walk around their villages with little or no medical protection, little or no police protection and little or no guarrantee that their family will be able to subsist should something happen to them..... Yet, I believe that most americans live with more anxiety in their daily lives than they do.

If I were you I would buy stocks in CNN as they have the fear = ratings market tied up, they make you frightened and they are garranteed to make money off you. Also don't forget that the classic way to keep a people in check is to keep them frightened about a foreign enemy. I'm sure George W. Bush is well aware of this.

Fear is a tool.....but it is being used by more than just the terrorists....

Thanks for posting that article. It did make me feel a little better. We're leaving for WDW tomorrow, lucky for us it's only a 3 hr car ride (which can seem like an eternity if something did happen, because we had that very car ride home from WDW on 9/11/01)...

We're meeting family who are boarding a plane tomorrow and yes they are a little nervous (I would be too-and I was a nervous flyer pre 9/11). I've been a little nervous with all of this hype and even more because dh won't be joining us for this trip.

But, with all of this stuff going on I have to stop and think how it will be like this for the rest of our lifetime and our kids' and so on.

And, now with this new code color system, one has to stop and think and remember that the press told us "they" had warnings pre 9/11. Well isn't this code system a way to also cover "themselves" so we can't blame them for not warning us if something does happen.

Granted it doesn't help me feel any better when they issue these warnings (and oh, don't want to cause panic), but as the article closed didn't it stress -they win if they create terror among us? And, isn't that what they really are doing?

Hi.

Haven't been on the boards since I went to Disney in 11/02. I usually check the boards on a daily basis when I am planning a trip.

I just got home from my job as a teacher's aide in a pre-school and was feeling a little bit blue, disgusted and sad all at the same time. We had a staff meeting on our procedures of what to do in case of emergency - which was brought on by the stuff going on in the world. We have the usual meetings on fire safety all the time but this was to talk about procedures for attacks/bombings (not on our school but we live close to Philadelphia). I am still can't believe we had to go over that but that is the world we live in now! It will not be going away anytime soon.

So I decided to start planning a trip to disney to keep my mind off of things!

The posts on this thread made me feel a lot better! Thanks!!

Our country is more secure now than it has ever been. I am a firm believer that we must be smart about what we do, but not scared.
Let's not let the terrorists take away our American lifestyle and claim victory !
We will get through this darker period of world history.

I absolutely refuse to buy into any of this garbage. I can't believe it when I went to the local CVS to get Valentines Day cards and I notices all of the bottled water and batteries have been wiped out. Comon I hardly doubt the "sky is going to fall" anytime soon. It seems as though fear has paralyzed this nation. The grey area seems to be getting larger and it's hard to figure out exactly who the bad guys are, since the government lets you hear and see exactly what they want you to. I am not taping up my windows, not living in fear of taking the subways. I am however looking forward to our Disney trip in less than 80 days. (I would know the exact number but I can't get the darn counter to work:(

I believe this is all a clever rouse over oil. I am not buying into it and certainly not putting off my normal life.

If I'm going to die in a terrorist attack, I would rather my last second on this earth be spent at WDW than sitting at my desk at work.

Well, some of the folks who are buying batteries, duct tape, bottled water, etc., are doing that, not so much out of some terrible fear, but because they are the kind of people that want to DO something, to feel more in control, more prepared. No harm in that.

My mother is just this type of person, and I spent the morning with her, going to Sam's Club, Home Depot, etc., to get all of her supplies. She insisted on buying 3 of everything, so my sister and I would have our supplies for our homes. I just graciously accepted it all, even though I wouldn't have gone out and bought a thing for myself. But if it makes her feel better, and more in control of the situation, what's the big deal?

And she's not cowering in her home. She's as busy and active as always, and she and my dad have a 3 week trip planned to Europe this summer.

I will tell you I do not normally like long lines at WDW, but I was there 9 days after 9/11 back in '01. I sure missed the lines, it was really sad. :(

I agree with Muffin that I would rather be with my family in WDW than anywhere else should anything happen!!! We went on the DCL the week after 9/11 and my attitude was the same then. You cant live in fear!
