Interested in DVC!!

More points don’t solve the problem if there’s nothing available to book via DVC. Renting out existing points so that you can pay cash for what you want is a more rational idea.

It does when you have enough points to come more often, I would have booked 11 months out for two trips instead of one.

? :confused3 ?

That doesn’t address your complaint that there is no availability on the DVC side but there is on the cash side. If you had the points to book for Christmas now, but can’t because of the lack of availability, then having more points would not change a thing. Had you booked at 11 months out, since you own enough points to book for Dec 2019, you would not have run into an availability problem.

So It is best to book a reservation at 11 months no matter what? If I think I would like to go on 2-1-20 I would have booked on 3-1-19 but three months down the line on 5-1-19, I no longer can go on 2-1-20 but on 5-1-20. Can I re book on the 11 month mark of the 5-1-19 vacation without penalty or loss of points? Even if I was using banked points?

Maybe. It depends on your UY and the points involved.

If the 5/1 vacation is within the same UY as your 2/1 UY then yes, you can cancel the 2/1 and rebook the 5/1 and there will be no difference at all. No penalties and you can use the banked points. But, for example if you have a March or April UY then a 5/1 reservation would be in the next UY compared to booking a 2/1 reservation and your banked points would no longer be unable for the latter reservation. As long as you cancel or modify a reservation 31 days or more prior to check in there are no penalties. 31 days or less will place points into holding. Still not the end of the world as you still have the points but you can only book room that are available no more than 60 days ahead of check in.

This is especially helpful. And, you have to be very careful if using banked points because they cannot be "rebanked", correct? This can be very confusing to the novice. Has anyone ever lost points because of banking and then had to cancel or postpone their DVC stay? Could you rent out banked points or entire vacation reservations?

Banked points cannot be banked a second time. Nor can they be “unbanked” if you decide to travel in the current UY.

There may be members who have lost points because they banked them and then didn’t travel the next UY. Stuff happens. People don’t understand the value of their points. Or they don’t understand UYs and how the system works.

You can “rent” banked points just like any current UY points. You’re really not renting points, you’re renting a reservation. You could make a spec reservation and rent it out thru a broker or on a website that permits it.

You can rent out a reservation that you made with banked or borrowed points. The other thing to be concerned about is canceling a trip less than 31 days out (your points become holding points) which can only be used to book 60 days out and expire at the end of the UY. Or canceling a trip in the last four months of your UY and then you miss the banking deadline.
