yes, private renting of points can be a bargain,but there's a reason why many don't use that bargain,there are risks involved. OP should think carefully if they're willing to risk that much money....or if it's worth the extra money to be able to change things later on....it's kind of part of the 'cost' or renting points is you HAVE to know for sure....

What I meant by the points are now 'mine' is, I paid for their use from the DVC owner and if I ever had to cancel, he is not responsible for refunding my money - so, those points are mine if I can find a time to reschedule before the points expire(which the DVC owner gave me the date they are good until). This is why I go into thinking that renting DVC points as non-refundable.

Well I hope that's in your contract because those points aren't yours. They are the owners. Your reservation is yours. If you don't use it, not all owners will work with you to reschedule. I wouldn't work with someone who cancelled for no reason, I would do what I could within reason for someone who had a true emergency. And depending on the use year and availability, there might be nothing that can be done. Also why should an owner spend more time for no extra gain? Just keep that in mind.

Exactly! I don't think that non-owners understand the ins and outs of DVC points. Heck, many owners don't understand the details fully. I know that it wasn't until I began seriously considering a DVC purchase that I looked into the way it runs beyond how many points it costs to rent a unit.

The PP really needs to be realistic about how a last-minute cancellation would affect being able to use those points at a later date. It's not as if they would be able to just pick new dates and book a new reservation at the resort of their choice. It doesn't work that way. And to expect the DVC owner to work diligently to secure a new reservation for the renter is somewhat naive.

The restrictions on points that are in holding makes it difficult to book what DVC owners consider to be a last-minute reservation. It's possible that:

• nothing is available at the PP's chosen resort
• the room category that they wanted is not available
• only a few non-consecutive days at one resort will be available to be booked
• it may take more points to book the new reservation (which the owner may not have)
• it may take fewer points to book the new reservation (which the owner may not refund the difference)

Yes, renting points is a much more affordable way to have a deluxe vacation at Disney. But there are risks that accompany that great bargain. If you really want to know how owners view renting, go lurk on the DVC boards for a while before you jump into it. Make sure that you are well-informed.
