Inspired... Not washing blankets at resorts??

At the parks people do not have certain bodily fluids on railings or the logs besides saliva maybe. But in your room thats an entirely different story. We all teach our kids to be careful in public restrooms yes? This is the same thing. We all get too comfortable in our rooms b/c it becomes our home for the week, and many forget to keep in perspective that were staying in yet another public restroom.

I have stayed in a lot of hotel rooms, and I have never gotten lice, bedbugs or an STD from the sheets and comforters. Germs are everywhere, especially computer keyboards. At the buffets, you use the same utensils as everyone else to serve yourself. Do you think everyone washes their hands? With all the diapers getting changed at Disneyworld, I guarantee that there is feces on every surface in Walt Disney World. Lots of vomit all over also. Children everywhere not covering their mouths when they cough, picking their noses nad running their hands along the rail.... You cannot get away from it.

The key is to keep your hands out of your mouth. Don't bite your nails, chew your cuticles, etc. Use hand sanitizer before you eat.

I think the real issue people are worried about is sexual body fluids. Being that it is DisneyWorld, probably only newlyweds are doing the nasty. you probably would run into those fluids more often in an offsite hotel than a Disney Resort (just my uneducated guess).

OT: People are actually having chicken pox parties to expose their children to germs that are more dangerous in adulthood.

I know some people think this is silly but I always bring my own sheets and blankets when staying in a hotel. I also bring disinfective wipes and wipe down everything as soon as we get there. It takes 10-15 min.'s and I feel more comfortable in our room for the rest of the week. I don't bring pillows but I make the bed with my sheet over the pillows.

Why on earth would you assume only newlyweds do the nasty.. .There are tons of folks going without kids...

Another thing I recommend is buying some of the disposable toilet seat covers for the theme parks bathrooms. (I'm thinking Disney already provides them) At times like this I'm kinda glad I have boys!! Also that was a great tip about flip-flops to wear in your room....we do this all the time.

I do both of these suggestions. :)

I thought that was why they invented kids clubs. :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

LOL! Maybe it is just me, but DisneyWorld does not get me "in the mood!"

while I will admit the idea IS gross- of someone else's bodily fluids being on the comforter, but unless you plan on living in a bubble and becoming a complete germophobe you have to chill as someone else put it.

There have been studies that children exposed to germs actually had better immune systems and less likelihood of asthma than those with less exposure. Should you deliberately expose your child to something gross - no , but gross is EVERYWHERE!!!

You CAN NOT avoid germs or even bodily fluids unless you live in a bubble,
do you eat at restaurants - yes you do.
do you open doors? yes you do.

And how about swimming in public pools or hot tubs? come on - lighten up!

And I have to disagree a bit with the idea that germs are becoming more deadly and resistant to antibiotics just because people are exposed to them. I would say a vast majority of the increase in antibiotic resistant "bugs" is due to the overuse of antibiotics for every little thing. THIS is what causes a germ, bacteria whatever to mutate, not simply from passing from one person to another.

And - before you all get worked up about Hep B, keep in mind that this is a BLOOD or BODILY FLUIDS transmitted disease, similar in fact to the AIDS virus. For HepB to spread to someone by casual contact with a bathroom counter is just not going to happen. It would have to be a huge coincidence like you rubbing an open wound on a counter top with freshly deposited Hep B.

In short I guess as gross as the blanket thing sounds, if living in a bubble is ut - welcome to reality, I would think Disney is not exactly a germ free enviornment.

I am not saying don't clean, or don't ask for a fresh blanket or whatever - just lighten up a bit - the world is chock full of germs viruses and bacteria - and not only can you not avoid it - but it is not good in the long run to do so.

I agree! I was just too embarrased to say anything

Definitely don't tell DH that- he'll never want to go to WDW :o :teeth:

I honestly don't know how some of you can even leave your homes. You are SURROUNDED by contagion everywhere you go. Do you and your kids touch surfaces anywhere in public? Guess what--GERMS! I just don't get the hysteria...

I believe its the thought of sleeping on others yuckiness and drool.. Thats really my only pet peeve is my pillow on vacatation.

Everyday is okay, but maybe when they think about it touching them for extended periods (like sleep).....

First off, given that Disney World is the #1 honeymon destination in the country, if that were true, it wouldn't be a very reassuring stat.

Secondly, I really don't think that's the case. :scared1:

Interesting... I thought Hawaii would be the number one destination.

Exhaustion, other people's kids everywhere, high fat food, the kids in the room... doesn't do it for me. I guess everyone is different...

This is one of the reasons why I love My DVC, The first thing I do when I arrive is strip the beds, put the comforters in the corner. all the sheets and blankets go straight into the washer and the dryer.
I also pack my kids own pillowcases. Thats DVC of course. I done as other posters suggested and had housekeeping bring up a new set of bedding including a blanket.
As far as the Lysol, I spray everything including the lightswitches and doohandles. ( per the advice of my pediatrician) I also will tell you he said the germiest thing in the room is the remote controls. :sad2:

I didn't think anyone sounded overly hysterical about any of this - just pretty grossed out. If spending a half hour of my vacation wiping things down and requesting a bedding change makes the next 7 days more worry-free, it is time well invested!

Perhaps I'm too relaxed about germs. I always take the bedspread off. But, I could be happy regarding the blanket if Disney would just triple sheet the bed. But, even in the deluxe resorts they don't. Disney's are the only deluxe hotels I've ever stayed in that don't triple sheet. Of course, one can argue whether Disney deluxe hotels really even belong in the deluxe category, but that's another issue. . . . ..

For ya'll who want to have some gross out fun on your next trip, go to your local PetsMart store.

In the aisle where they sell the housebreaking stuff for dogs, they also sell a $20 portable blacklight thing that is designed to pick up all manner of nasty stuff that the human eye can not see.

Granted these are marketed to people with pets who are in the process of training to look for "accidents" in their houses, but they also work to pick up stains on sheets etc.

We usually don't use the bedspread when we go. We do use the sheets and pillowcases, and we are not really germonphobic enough to do a thorough search of our room for each stay. But I think it would be eye opening to some to get the blacklight and look around...
