Inspired... Not washing blankets at resorts??

i will reserve comment on the rest of this thread, but i just wanted to say:

but most of us would just rather avoid permanent diseases like Heptatis B which CAN be gotten from a hotel toilet seat. The

no, really you can't. hepatitis a - i suppose it is possible. but hep b and c - the chances of that happening are pretty much nil. you'd have to have an open wound and sit in a pool of infected bodily fluid that was recent. and even then it is possible you wouldn't contract hep b/c. even with hep a the odds of getting it from contaminated food are much, much, much higher than getting it from a toilet seat.

please don't spread misinformation.

I work as a nurse in a hospital so I have encountered all kinds of germs and diseases and get educated in them a lot. I have to say even though I am not a germ phobic I am careful. The whole other person's bodily fluids is a complete EEEWWW factor, but do I worry about catching a disease-No-the chances are slim to none I have more of a chance going to work every day. My DD and DH have more of chance catching something off me that I bring home every day. Which is why I don't wear my uniform after work and the shoes get removed before entering my house.

Changed this post b/c people thought I was saying you could contact diseases in places that is near impossible, but if you look above I said that the chances are slim to none. Please read people entire post and don't assume things. I am sorry if I misinformed anyone.

Eeeww! Next time - the first thing I will do is take off the comforters and wash them in the resort washing machines! That is so gross! That is just wrong!

It is absolutely NASTY!!!

I travel quite often. First thing I do when I check into a hotel (any hotel) is to unmake the bed and toss the blanket and comforter away from the bed, onto the sofa or chair. I then call housekeeping and ask for extra sheets and just use them to cover up with.

I also carry a can of lysol in my bag.

Hotels and buffets are  disgusting.

maybe we should all wear haz-mat suits to the parks :scratchin I'll bet there are some REALLY nasty germs there :crazy2:

Sorry you felt I was spreading mis-information but this is what I study and what I have been taught by my universities. It is also the same thing that actual doctors have told me during conversations about hotel cleaning policies. Not to mention the nurses I interact with frequently in my volunteering. And if there are people still getting these diseases without knowing how, then what would you suggest as a reason for them contracting it? And when I say just Hepatitis I am referring to all 3 types, A included. I didn't want to cause tempers to rise amongst anyone, but knowedge is power and I was merely trying to share the information I am often rigorously tested on since it was relevant to this thread. I'm sure at least one parent will appreciate it. It was not meant to induce a panic or anything but diseases can be frightening, and if the idea of poor cleaning policies scares people I have to say their pretty smart to be cautious.

I have stayed at many hotels over the years and have yet to catch anything at one. However, in my youth (translation: bar-hopping days), I picked up Herpes simplex from a bathroom. Luckily it was in my eyes (contact lens wearer). Doctor guessed it was from the sink area of the bathroom. I don't touch anything in a bathroom stall. I lock the door with a piece of toilet tissue, put tissue or seat cover on the seat, flush with tissue or foot, and reopen door with tissue. Learned how to wash hands from working in a hospital for so many years. Gather paper towels prior to turning on sink, wash, dry hands, and turn off faucet with gathered paper towels.

This being said, I have a friend who is SOOO clean and germaphobic. She washes and washes her hands and uses antibacterial everything. While having her hair washed at the salon, the stylist scratched my friend's forehead. Nothing major, just a scrape. My friend developed a staph infection that was horrible. The dr. said if she had not been so very clean, she would have no problems.

We do take our own pillows to hotels due to allergies. Have never had a problem with disgusting bed linens.

As far as that nasty remote...just put it in a Ziploc bag and use it that way!

This is also the things that I do, but didn't until nursing school and they taught us to do this and "correctly wash our hands" I mean we actually had to do a check off of hand washing. But before than I would have never thought to get my paper towels before washing my hands and to turn the faucets off with another paper towel. I don't see other people doing this in bathrooms and have gotten a couple strange looks like she must have OCD. This is good advice for people to follow.

:rotfl2: with all of you so concerned about hotel rooms; have you ever work in a fast food restraunt? :rotfl2: :rotfl:

in your original quote you said hep b specifically.

and as i am sure you know, since you are a medical professional and all, the methods of transmittal for hep a, b, and c are different.

anyways, not trying to cause a ruckus here. i think i'm out of this thread.

Just a thought to put this into perspective for some... besides the ... ahem... intimate ... nature of some abovementioned ick on the comforters... pictures this......

It's been a great day at the parks, it's mid-July, 90 degrees...typical florida weather. The parks are crowded (as usual) and you hop on the bus to return to your room. As often happens, the bus becomes standing room only and lo and behold... there is a lovely fellow-guest right in front of you. He's been at the parks since last Labor Day from the looks of his pit-stained shirt, he has drops of sweat lobbing at people everytime he moves back and forth so as not to miss anything on the perilous ride to the resort. Upon closely (albeit discreetly) watching the big lug hike up his drawers a time or two (not-so discreetly scratching his what-nots) and run his overly sweaty-extra hairy arm under his nose and then under said pit so as to "cleanse" said hand/arm, he hops off the bus at your resort. You carefully slide past on the walkway and then hustle your bustle to inside to retreat away from this lovely person. You near the elevators and .... gasp..... so does he. You are practically climbing on the walls and pretending to read the same advertisement from the restaurant that you've read 15 times, but you are near to running out of fresh air - did I mention that this guy was a teeney-weeney bit RIPE!!! Well, he steps out on the same floor. You're offended that this oaf is even in your resort, much less on your floor!!! You're indignant! You finally reach your room, you insert your key card, you're almost there!!!!!! But wait!!!!!!!! Said Oaf passes and gives a little grin... "Did they ever fix the toilet in that room??? We were in that room 2 days ago and it wasn't working right. Oh, well, have fun... me, I'm gonna run in my room and just drop on the bed." What???? You're room??? He was IN your room????? You stand there totally shocked.... finally entering, you yourself almost drop down on the beautifully made bed, but at the last second you make a triple belly flip the likes of which Greg Louganis would be proud.... this room??? that means.... the comforter!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH. :faint:

Okay... momentary insanity has passed. Just thought I'd have a little fun. Oh, and yep, I always get rid of the comforters. ::yes::

WE STAYED AT A NICE HOTEL FOR A LONG WEEKEND AWAY WITH FRIENDS....WHEN I GOT INTO BED (DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE COMFORTERS), THERE WAS A DRIED "WHITE" SUBSTANCE UNDER THE COMFORTER THAT WAS FOUND BY MY SON,,,,,,,BECAUSE IT WAS SCRATCHING HIS ARMS.........OHHHHH I WAS SO GROSSED OUT! I CALLED HOUSEKEEPING AND THEY BROUGHT ANOTHER COMFORTER 30 MINUTES LATER! I DID NOT SLEEP GOOD ON THIS TRIP AT ALL.....TOO GROSSED OUT! IT IS TRUE...YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS ON THOSE COMFORTERS!!!!!!!!!!!

I am soooo relieved! I thought the comforters would be dirty also, but after reading that nobody ever uses them, they must be clean! :rotfl: :rotfl:

I agree that the idea of sleeping under a comforter that has been used for at least 30 days by some stranger is disgusting. This is the reason that I remove them, wipe the remote with antibac. wipes, clean the bathroom surfaces, door knobs, phone, etc.

BUT it would be nearly impossible for a resort to wash comforters on a weekly basis. They would wear out in no time and it would cost a lot for replacement and washing. I am frankly surprised that people thought that the comforters were cleaned after every guest! Extremely surprised!!!

I know they are going to clean the comforters & all the linens in my room this summer since my son has severe allergies & the reservationist told me that they do that for things like that.

I am so relieved. But I can only hope it actually gets done.

Likewise about not causing a ruckus. :) I love the disboards though b/c we can all have different opinions and it's okay. :) Yes in my original one I referred to hepatitis B but in the other ones I believe I just referred to Hepatitis in general. Sorry about the confusion. :) And yes I'm very aware of the different modes of transmital, not quite a medical professional yet though. Upon graduation I will be but I have another 2 years and cannot WAIT to get into practicing!

On the 2nd night of our trip last month, we woke up to my dd4's projectile vomiting. House keeping was up to our room within 1/2 hour with fresh blankets and sheets. No new comforter. :scared1: The guy that delivered them had blue bio hazard gloves on and wasn't getting anything on himself. She did it again about 2 hours later - only this time we were prepared and only some towels got it. We were staying in DVC villas and got an extra cleaning the day after the incident.

Both times, the comforter was unscathed. I always fold them up and leave them on the foot of the bed. In addition to the germ issue - they are always scratchy and uncomfortable. :rolleyes2
