Films that you thought were really great, but didn't get much fanfare or aren't well known.

Couple of my favorites include:

Bowfinger with Steve Martin & Eddie Murphy. With those two starring, you'd think it would be a big hit. Maybe it had something to do with the title. It's a cute, funny film.

Creator with Peter O'Toole & Mariel Hemmingway. Very 80s, but a really sweet movie with a wonderful message. Too bad no one's ever heard of it.

Moulin Rouge

Moonlight Mile

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Frida

The one I thought of right away was "Iron Giant." It's a beautiful story, beautifully done.

Bring it On. Definately didn't expect to like that movie in the least, but now have seen it many times.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - Reading the book right now and it's better than the movie.

I just recently watched a movie that the critics hated, "The Majestic". It starred Jim Carey, who I usually don't care for. But I love him in this movie.

Another underrated movie, imo, is The Shawshank Redemption. If not mistaken, the Oscar that year went to Forest Gump. This was by far the more superior of the two and really should have taken the awards Of course, anything Morgan Freeman is in is bound to be good.

Grosse Pointe Blank, High Fidelity, Serendipty - anything with John Cusak. I love him, but he never makes the blockbuster films so he gets overlooked.

The Joy Luck Club, How to Make an American Quilt - both beautiful films that came and went without fanfare.

How can a movie that was nominated for Oscars (e.g. Moulin Rouge, etc.) be considered "under-rated"?

Snoopy -- 100% agree with you on John Cusack! I loved Grosse Pointe Blank!! Although, Serendipity was a bit overly sugary sweet for my tastes (not that this should be a surprise! :p )

Another one I thought was dumb the first time I saw it, but the more I watched it the more I loved it was Office Space. :teeth:

Agree with you Snoopy, The Shawshank Redemption is one of my all time favorite movies.

Also, Legally Blonde and Return to Me were both under-rated I think.

October Sky - DH was in tears at the end, he could really relate to this movie. (Ok, I was crying too.)

Sabrina (the remake) - As much as we like the original, the remake was even better (can't think of too many times THAT happens).

I agree with October Sky we love that movie.

Also - Remember the Titans
That Thing You Do
The Sandlot - we love this movie, and never heard a word about it when it came out.

agree too with The Majestic and Shawshank.

Shawshank Redemption is a fantastic movie. I can always watch it! I also like Steel Magnolias, Enemy of the State, Hunt for Red October, Get Shorty and Spaceballs!

Steve, Word. Office Space is one of my favorite movies. (And now that my friends are starting to leave college and go into the dreaded "real world," it's amazing how accurate an introduction to corporate culture the movie is. It's almost a little bit scary..)

I loved Frida -- I wish it had gone into wider distribution.

I also loved Old School. I didn't really want to see it at first because I thought it would just be a stupid frat guy flick, but it was really funny!

My DH loves Office Space... (must be an IT geek thing!)

He also loves/ and I do too... Wargames. Love Matthew Broderick!

Remember the Titans
Weekend at Bernies (its just hysterical)
October Sky
Shawshank, I have to agree.. its an amazing movie!
Atlantis--yes, I am one of the few that actually liked this Disney movie.. enjoyed it a lot!

My Favorite Year with Peter O'Toole and Mark Linn Baker. FABULOUS movie nobody ever saw, LOL!

Ditto on the John Cusak thing, I love his films and they always seem to be devalued by the critics.

Another vote for John Cusack movies, Grosse Point Blank is one of my favorite movies!!! So is Say Anything. Even though Serendipity is sappy, I love it. High Fidelity is great too.

Office Space was WONDEFUL!!! I love that movie...anyone who has worked in a "cubefarm" can appreciate it and its witty office humor. From my understanding that movie bombed at the theaters, but is a cult classic now...What a great movie...

Someone's got a case of MUUNNDAYS!!!! LOL

"Penn & Teller Get Killed"-Underrated pitch-black comedy about the punk-rock anti-magician duo playing pranks on each other after Penn announces on national TV his desire to be tracked down and killed to add some excitement to his life. Things get complicated when a real murderer (David Patrick Kelly) gets in on the action. Speaking of Kelly...

"The Warriors"-A novel of ancient Greek quests transformed into a tale of gangs on the mean streets of 1979 New York City. Once you see this movie, it sticks with you permanently. "Warriors...Come out to play-ee-ay!"

"The Running Man"-I know the DisBoarders are reality TV fans (from "The Real World" to "Survivor" to "American Idol"), but to me, this is a rather accurate representation of what reality TV is really about. Many people see it as misogynist violent trash...So is most of the reality TV programming out there today. This is nothing more than an exaggeration of the truth...It's a fine movie, and it's a shame more people don't think so.

More to come hopefully...

Sincerely,

John "anotherboardnposter" Kilduff

I'm with everyone who loved Shawshank. That is one of the best movies ever.

I also have to say I've enjoyed most of the lesser celebrated Disney animated features including Atlantis and Hunchback.
