Inspired by pronunciation thread...Pirates

The thread on how to pronounce various names at WDW got me thinking...

Where are the Pirates in Adventureland from? The Ca-RIB-be-an, or the Ca-rib-BE-an?

I've always called them Ca-rib-BE-an myself, but at the WDW annual board meeting, everyone from Eisner on down pronounced it Ca-RIB-be-an. (Of course, I guess if the 'head cheese' says it that way, you do the same )

So, how do folks on the DIS say it?

I guess I pronounce it both ways actually! I thought I said Ca-RIB-be-an, but then I just said it to my son outloud and I said Ca-rib-BE-an!

I found this definition on the net from the Hutchinson Encyclopaedia:

When British people talk about the Caribbean the word is usually pronounced [carry-bee-yun] but in expressions such as Caribbean island the main stress shifts back on to the first syllable. A few speakers always pronounce the word [k' rib-ian]. The US pronunciation is [ke-rib-ian].


So I guess we're all British!

I've always pronounced it Ca-RIB-be-an, but I think the other way is the right way, because that's the way most people I've heard pronounce it.

well, I pretty much say it either way, normally car-i-BE-an when I talk about the movie or ride.

My son (7) on the other hand, pronounces it KAY-rib-e-an (long A in the first syllable). he's wrong, but it's cute.

One time when I was at DL (I was maybe 12 at the time and it was before they redid the outside queue) there was a cm over a speaker saying "If you want to ride Pirates of the Car-i-BE-an get in the left line. If you want to ride Pirates of the Car-I-be-an get in the right line." They of course went to the exact same ride.

But actually - everyone is right! I looked it up in Webster's Dictonary (just for the sake of argument) and it is pronounced both ways!

I worked in the pirate-themed shop (Pieces of Eight) just as you exit the attraction in DL during college. I never pronounced it anything but Ca-rib-BE-an. But, just as everyone else here, I refer to the actual place as Ca-RIB-be-an. Funny how that works!

If I am using as a noun (as in Pirates of...), I say Ca-rib-BE-an, but when using as an adjective (as in Carribean Beach Resort), I say Car-RIB-be-an.
