Inspired by pronunciation thread...Pirates

When British people talk about the Caribbean the word is usually pronounced [carry-bee-yun] but in expressions such as Caribbean island the main stress shifts back on to the first syllable. A few speakers always pronounce the word [k' rib-ian]. The US pronunciation is [ke-rib-ian].

I was in the minority by the results of the poll, but if you go by the above quote then I use the US pronunciation...unless I'm talking about the movie...and speaking of that...I just found out the they built the black pearl at a shipyard 10 minutes from my house, and I never knew about it! I saw pictures that my sister-in-law has of it, but never bothered to tell me the disney freak of the family about it. I'll probably pout for weeks about this...

This is a funny one - I always say Pirates of the Ca-rib-BE-an when referring to the ride/movie but that is the only time I pronounce it that way. If I'm referring to the resort at WDW or the islands themselves I say the
Ca-RIB-be-an Beach Resort.

Don't know why though - always have and probably always will

I didn't realize it until I read this, but indeed I do the same thing!

I also saw the film for the first time last night (was VERY impressed - had no idea how much I'd like it!) and I seem to remember them saying it BOTH ways in the film. I guess I'll just have to watch it again to find out!

That is so weird! I do the same thing. The only time I EVER say Ca-rib-BE-an is for this ride. I always thought that was because it's how my parents said it to me when I was little. But obviously, you don't all have my parents.

Wonder why we've all done it? Has the pronunciation of this word shifted in general use in the last 30 years?

I just realized that's what I do. I have always pronounced Pirates that way.

But then, I do have a British Mum so that could explain why the two different pronounciations.
