While I believe most of us are fairly honest, some of the later posts seemed to think that it is "OK" to make up stories, even deaths, on Internet Bulletin Boards.

That got me thinking: Is it OK to "die" in cyberspace? How about lying? Exaggertating a story?

What is the difference?

Is there a difference?

Have YOU ever done this?

:confused3

Well, no I can't really say that I have lied or embellished. If you were to read my threads you'd realize that if I were going to make things up I'd done a whole lot better job. :rotfl2: Why make up boring? ;)

No, what you see it what you get with me. I use my real name in all the forums that I frequent, no need for alternate user names.

My theories on why people may lie about terrible things~ There are people that lead lonely lives, the internet may be the only place where they have access to "social interaction", a place where someone will listen to them. So, they come up with fantastic stories to get the attention they don't get in real life, maybe there is some element of truth in their stories or maybe it's all made up, only they know. I know people that don't know how to function unless there is some drama going in their daily lives, which is usually created by themselves. Then again, it could just be that they are mentally unstable.

LOL I was going to say the same thing. I'd be thinner and richer, that's for sure.

No. I have never lied nor embellished. It's not "alright" to do something like that.

I would never do anything like that.

Occasionally when I play on-line backgammon I tell lies - who cares - I'm only going to "see" this person for the length of a backgammon game. Usually I just say I'm tall, blonde, gorgeous and have big tatas. Most people know that I've got to be fibbing (especially when I'm playing on a Friday night! :rotfl2: ) but occasionally a dim bulb will believe me.

I don't think it is alright and i've never done it. (Though when I make the claim that DW is totally Hot, especially for a 50 year old, some might disagree and think I'm exagerating :earboy2: ).

But I have to admit that I often suspect others of it. And I don't really know why I suspect it. There are been a few obvious cases, but usually I have no evidence. I guess I just consider "virtual" communities a bit suspect. Again, I'm not sure why I think that though.

:rotfl: Like I said on another thread--I'm a 5'9" 120 pound blonde bombshell. Or was that 125 pounds? See when I lie I then have to remember my story! :rotfl2:

No, I don't lie online. Mainly for the same reason that I don't lie IRL. I don't want to have to keep track of what I've said--it's much easier to keep your story straight if you're telling the truth. Plus, well, I suck at lying IRL and avoid it at all costs so I'm not in the habit of doing it. :teeth: I had a friend tell me once that I was the all-time worst liar she'd ever seen in her life and she used to get a kick out of watching me phrase something diplomatically so I wouldn't have to tell an out and out lie. As in when someone gets a really unflattering haircut, "That style is really popular now, isn't it?" :teeth:

No, I don't lie here. I've learned that it may not be as exciting, but it's always better to tell the truth. Easier to remember too!

And I agree that if I DID lie, I'd make up something good like "I'm Eva Longoria's stand in on Desparate Housewives. People often mistake me for her younger, prettier sister." (I only wish!!!)

I once had a friend ask me to watch her child so her and her DH could go out to lunch. I did and when she told me where they went for lunch I commented that the place used to not serve lunch and I guess that they started. She then admitted that they really hadn't gone there--they'd stayed home and had a quiet lunch sans children. I had not suspected that she had been lying (I truly figured that the restaurant started serving lunch) and wouldn't have thought anything about them staying at home for lunch. I did not think it was something to lie about and after that I realized that even in real life some people lie. And we were close friends (had been for years), but it made me wonder what else she had lied about. I'm just not real fond of lying.

I'm a terrible liar, so nope I haven't lied. I haven't really been tempted to either. My life is boring, but it's my life & I like it!

I have no reason to lie, and certainly nothing to hide. And as other's have said, it's too hard to remember lots of stories ;)

have you lied/embellished on the Internet?
What for? If anything I have to stop myself from posting TMI. My life is complicated enough. I don't need to add drama.
Heck, I'm afriad to lie & say my kids are sick for fear they will get sick. :rotfl: I'm too chicken to lie.

I don't lie IRL, so I won't lie on the internet. While my life is boring at times, I don't feel the need to add drama and suspense.

What's the point in lying? One lie snowballs into many lies, and sooner or later you can't even keep track of the lies you've told. I would think it just gets so stressful trying to keep everything straight! Not only that, but liars ALWAYS get caught, whether or not they realize it.

i never understood the point - impressing a bunch of people you don't know IRL? :confused3 i'm on another board where there's a shameless bragger. i don't care for that much either.

briefly here I didn't announce my gender if that counts - when you're asking about DDP it doesnt matter does it. ;) then when I got into a debate or two, i felt i like should fess up to having a lot of shoes and make-up.

i could be a girl or a drag queen i guess :rotfl2:

but griping about being p/g probably gave it away :rotfl2:

Wouldn't dream of telling lies here because it's my hope that I can actually meet many of you IRL. Besides that, POPDADDY will be sleeping on my new Aerobed before long and I think he'd tell on me! ;)
