I am going to NYC next weekend to my DH best friend's wedding. It is "black tie". Does anyone know what "black tie" would be for the ladies? The dress I found is 3/4 length, black with sequens around the bottom and near the small slit on the left side. I am worried about the straps - they are 1 inch straps so my shoulders are a bit bare. I bought a shall to cover up a bit. Is this appropraite to wear to St. Patrick's Cathedral? I was not sure about the shoulder thing...

Your dress sounds perfect and very pretty. Keep your shoulders covered in church with the shawl and you can remove it at the reception if you like. The covered shoulders is optional in church these days (at least at weddings here in NY) but I'm old fashioned that way and think thats proper. Have a great time!

I agree with Fan2CSkr. Your dress sounds perfect. In the past black tie was only one type look. Now it have a bit more give. Black full length or 3/4 length is find. Grab a shawl too to keep warm or covered in the church. Have fun!
