Inside cabin for Alaska?

Wondering about if it would matter having an indoor cabin on an Alaskan cruise? Can you get that good a view with a veranda or do you need to be on deck to get the whole "picture" and therefore wouldn't matter if you had no windows in your cabin?

We had an inside room simply because it was how we could get on the ship. We spent the majority of our time on decks 4 and 9 going from one side to the other while we were at sea. There is so much to look at literally all around you -- especially while going through the inside passage. There are mountains on both sides of you very close to the ship so you can see the waterfalls and wildlife on them. Whale watching requires you to be out and about also if you want a better chance of spotting more of them. On our cruise the people who were out on deck would signal to others around them when they spotted something and everyone would move to where they were. It will take your breath away!

Do you get a great view from the verandah? Absolutely. Is it something you can't see from the public decks, absolutely not. We've sailed Alaska twice -- once with a verandah and once without. Even with the verandah, on glacier viewing day, we spent some of the time out on the public decks just because you have more freedom to move around and see different things. It was nice to be able to see the scenery right from your room and it is scenic the whole cruise. But we certainly didn't feel like we had an inferior cruise the second time without the verandah. We also got to see some things we might have otherwised missed -- like when someone spotted a whale forward when we were aft and we moved down deck 4 in time to see it's next surface which happened to be a breach (if I was in a verandah was on the other side of the ship, would never have known it happened.)

We saved the money on the cabin the second time and invested it into excursions.

I have cruised to Alaska twice - both times in an inside cabin. The first cruise was on Holland America in 2009 and last year on Princess. Being in an inside cabin was absolutely fine. We were out on deck most of the time and it was great. We cruised Glacier Bay both times and GB is awesome. If the only way you can cruise to Alaska is in an inside cabin - DO IT! Alaska is amazing.

Let's review. Inside cabin on any Disney ship vs. work. Which one wins?

HAHAHA...um yeh that wasn't even an option :rotfl2:

Thanks everyone. Makes me feel better if I book the inside so we have a little more cash for the excursions. You guys made up my mind! Thanks so much.

I often book an inside cabin in Alaska so that I save money. I turn on the tv to watch the bridge cam so that I can see and have a "window." I run out to the nearest deck door to check the weather before I get dressed. It is a little dark, but no big deal. Verandahs in Alaska are iffy as it is very cold when you are moving, so sitting on them doesn't happen!

Oh good point about the tv and sitting outside! I wish they had those magic portholes on these ships like the Dream and Fantasy!

Our 1st Alaska cruise 5 years ago was a cabin with a window. We spent most of our time on deck. It was nice to have daylight in our room though. I am an outside type of person. Our strategy for justifying DCL over other lines this time is to book an inside GTY. There are quite a number of available cabins so I am betting on an upgrade. I am fine if not but still hoping and willing to take pot luck on our assignment. If we have any money left we will look at port upgrades but doubtful.

For the price of 1 inside room on DCL we can get 2 adjoining outside rooms on HAL with Glacier Bay. DH and kids overruled me on this one and said they would sacrifice the space for DCL. :). I will sacrifice too...I could be at work!

We had an inside room in Alaska for cost reasons, as a bonus, we loved our Inside room because it's dark. It's light out very late and sun comes up really early in Alaska.

When you're awake, you're up in the public decks anyway. Would I have loved a glass of wine in the evening on my veranada, sure. However, I can have the same glass of wine on deck 4 or 9 and pay half as much for the cruise. :)

You'll have a great trip.

I would have to agree with remlap, we had an inside room and when we wanted to get some shut eye, it was dark. We never had to wait for the sun go down, which it really never does. Savings is also a good thing, money to buy that wine and enjoy on the public decks. At least from deck 10 you get the panoramic view, which you can not get on a verandah. My cabin of choice is an inside.

If you can at least do an OV I would. You can't always be up on deck, and there were several times we saw whales just looking out our porthole window.

DCL converted the Outlook Bar from an outside, walk-up bar to an inside bar/lounge before they started the Alaskan itinerary. We had an inside cabin on our 2011 Alaskan sailing and never missed having a verandah. We spent most of our time at the Outlook, including most of Tracy Arm day, and had a great time. If I were to sail the Alaskan itinerary again I wouldn't hesitate to book an inside cabin.
