I have an original and want to buy another plain one. On the website it does not enable me to purchase one without the whole party in the reservation. Is this how Disney is flying these days? I tried the store but they only have the character ones.

That's always been a requirement. If you only want to order one for youself, you can decline MagicBands for the remaining people on the reservation. If you do decline MBs for certain people and place the order, you can't go back and order MBs for the others later through MDE.

As @erionm said, you need to make a decision on what everyone in the party will be doing at the same time. Disney will let you buy just one for yourself, but you'll either need to decline one for the other guests or found out what they want and order for them at the same time you order for yourself.
