I've seen people refer to indirect flights as a cheaper way to get to Florida - what are the operators/routes that you can do this on.

We also looked at in direct flights for this august and they will still coming up quite expensive in the end we saved about £300 each by flying direct with virgin into miami and then drive up even with the car hire and a night at a hotel in miami it was to much of a saving to dismiss and allowed us to visit florida this year , maybe this could be an option for you :)

i found 550 each with air france for 19th oct for 2 weeks this year direct with them, they have several options on where to change but most are just one stop in usa somewhere

When we flew indirect it was with Delta (booked on KLM site)

Less than £300 each....but that was back in Oct 2009. :(

There are too many routes and operators to list, just do a search on Kayak.co.uk or travelsupermarket.com and it will list your options.
We are in Florida now with USairways Manchester~Philly~Tampa, had option of Orlando Int but preffered flight times into Tampa.
We paid £450pp, Virgin wanted £700+ as its school hol week.

Thanks Wayne - some useful tips there. Never realised Thomas Cook did direct flights to Orlando until I used Travelsupermarket. They are quite a bit cheaper than Virgin - has anybody had experience of using them?

Just be aware they are to a different airport (Sanford) so you won't be able to use DME.

I believe it's a longer drive to the tourist parts of Orlando too.

I see you're in Aberdeen. We did Glasgow-Newark-Orlando in May last year with Continental and would happily do it again. Infact I'm flying with Continental next month to Newark again, missing out the Orlando part though :sad2: Plus my flights to Orlando were £347pp, this year we've paid £500pp for 2 less flights!

I thought they also did Aberdeen-Newark-Orlando but I just checked and they make you do Aberdeen-Heathrow-Newark-Orlando which I personally wouldn't want the hassle of. Edinburgh definitely do Edinburgh-Newark-Orlando though as well.

DME is not really a problem for me - I will be getting a hire car (I like to be in total control of my own travel whenever possible - took 10 hours to get back from DLP when we went on Eurostar due to train problems!).

Looking forward to reading about your wedding and honeymoon Torsie - last time I was on this website you were just getting engaged! What's next - the birth at WDW? ;-)

We also tend to fly from England, combining our summer holiday with a visit to the Grandparents (who we get to look after the pets at the same time!) so we never really look for flights from Scotland. We tend to look at Manchester flights.

We are going the indirect route this year after the past two years of Flybe to London and Virgin from Gatwick.

This year it is KLM Aberdeen - Amsterdam. Delta Amsterdam - Boston, Boston to Orlando. Return is Delta Orlando - Detroit, Detroit - Amsterdam, KLM Amsterdam - Aberdeen. Troops think they are getting to visit another two American cities :rolleyes1

We've done indirect flights with Continental, American and Delta, connecting in Newark, Chicago and Atlanta respectively.

But we're about to try Aer Lingus, Birmingham-Dublin-Orlando. They also offer Orlando via Dublin from Edinburgh or Manchester. We usually fly from Manchester but it's a long wait in Dublin on the way home, so we're going from Birmingham instead.

Hopefully everything will be up and running in the new T2 at Dublin so we should clear US Immigration and Customs there rather than on arrival in Orlando.
