Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

Hey now, watch that "crappy" stuff! LOL. It's all relative. ;)

I'm glad you commented though, I'm having perpetual problems w/ my calves and shins & am nervous about finishing, much less time. I was kicking but (again, all relative) at the Princess at a pretty steady 10.5 or so, then my right knee buckled at exactly the halfway point. I managed to get it working again but it tacked on about 25 minutes to my time & I finished in 2:44. I was about as mad as a wet hen! I'm hoping for a finish under 2:30 this time, but boy am I nervous about the lower legs. I'm thinking of taking this week off for some re-coup.

Sorry! I didn't mean to imply it was a crappy time for everybody. Just in my situation, and also according to the results in my gender/age group, I could have done way better with more training. All I really wanted to convey was that even without perfect training, and a minor injury, you can still finish the race. I don't want people giving up before the race even starts! :)

AmyBeth- pm'ing you.

MREbuck- I think we're in exactly the same boat. Did anyone recommend massage? It's worked wonders for me in the past & now I get one before every race. I'm doing the same thing w/ cross training on the non-impact stuff @ the gym. Fingers crossed. You've actually inspired me tho, in that I really need to take a few days off from running. I did some ig hiking last week which was a bad idea.

Mrs.D- ouch! I had a boo boo toenail awhile back & boy is it painful, then insult to injury if ur a runner!

M'thnMom & Rm317- Aw man! I was going to run the Philly too. To be honest, I chickened out. I didn't think I could train for it in time, then when I got into the W&D off the waitlist, I was afraid i'd blow my legs for it if I did the Philly. This will be my 1st big run since I got hurt in March & it's been a less than easy recovery.

I'm jealous! It's going to be a fun one!

Aw, no worries- just teasing! And you're surely not going to find any quitters here!

Best of luck in beating your 2:44!!

I'd love to run with the 10/11 min folks :)

Ohhh sorry I didn't mention you roomthreeseventeen. My bad :). You offered too, that would be awesome. I used to be a full 10 mpm'er. Never got any faster for the long races but could always count on my 10's. My training has not been quite what I had hoped and the change of events in my life has really thrown a curve ball. I did get out there and run a solid pace yesterday and I have an 8 miler scheduled for this weekend. I'm a safe bet for an 11 mpm...hoping to come in under that. I would love for you to join our little group. Who knows...the adrenaline could make us all faster :). If we can manage to organize ourselves maybe we can have our own little pace group...company is fun during a race. Especially one like this! :goodvibes

PM me your email and I'll set up a little email group so we can keep and touch and make plans as it gets closer.

It's so exciting to see the connection going on here. This is why I love the DIS.

I am having a really bummer of a week. Had a portion of my big toe nail removed last Thursday and just got a closed shoe on yesterday. It wasn't bad on but smarts when i take it off. So it's been a week since I've run and now I'm afraid it'll hurt. I suppose having 2 babies hurt worse, but still.... I' kinda bummed out about it.

Hope your foot is feeling a little bit better, sorry to hear about that, even though it may not be a "huge deal" its still a bummer when little things like that sneak up and get ya!

AmyBeth & M'Mommy -
I'm in for the 11ish group too! Be happy to hang with both of you! I've never run with a group either, but ran with the friend the other day and found it really enjoyable. And would be glad to offer whatever support to keep each other going.

Are you going to the WISH meet on Friday?

Well I hope I see you all to say hello at the start at least!! I know I will be behind your group of 11 mpm or so...but hopefully not too far behind! I have been going around 12 mpm so far

youll be coming back when you finish to pick people like me up, right?? :rotfl: Not to kick me out, but carry me the last few miles haha

Thanks so much! My training has been sporadic since school started back up, but I'm hoping good old fashioned adrenaline helps through the actual race. :p

I'll do it!

Kinda like when Elliot carried JD over the finish line? :rotfl:

You're too kind and yes just like that :rotfl: I didn't watch that show much, but I loved that episode in particular!!

I have to ask you all on this board, am I doing something wrong with my running/nutrition/stretching? because when I am running my calves tense up pretty bad usually and feel heavy/tight at least when I do anything 4 miles or over or out on pavement.

I'm sure there are many many reasons why this would happen. Try stretching them beforehand. I felt this way during my recent half marathon and was told that not stretching this muscle was part of what aggravated my plantar fasciitis. Doctor gave me some calf stretches to do as part of my recovery. I am finding now that bike riding for my cross training is stretching them out and helping with tightness and the PF. I'm not an expert by any means. But I recommend stretching.

Are you stretching before hand? Any leg muscle that starts to hurt more then normal gets either ice or an ice bath afterwords for a few days. It usually nips any pending muscular problems in the bud.

I've had way too many pulled muscles throughout the years from not stretching. I never head out on a run or onto any athletic field without fully stretching out first and I haven't pulled a muscle since.

Your pulled muscles weren't from not stretching, according to this study.

While a running novice, I've played sports my whole life. I've heard conflicting reports about pre-activity stretching for years. The for being it loosens you up, the against being it's unwise to stretch "cold" muscles. "Think of the muscle as a rubber band" I've heard. Stretching it warm is fine, stretching it cold can snap it.

Personally, I try to do a little of both. Before a game I do light jog, followed by some very short bursts. Once a little warm, I then do some stretching.

I'm not sure if that would apply to just running, but it's kept me muscle pull-free (knock on wood) for quite a while.

Yeah, there are studies out there for everything. There are plenty of other ones that say you should stretch.

Before a race I do some light running, then stretch, then do some more light running and then do the race. Before a training run I just stretch since I do them all at night or in the evening and have been up and about all day and the muscles aren't all that "cold".

I'm starting to think that I am the slowest one on here! My long runs are around the 13-14 mpm pace. Today I was ecstatic to finish 5 miles at a 12 mpm pace. Anyone else here slow like me?

yes, my runs are very much at that pace.. I did a 6 miler the other day and really tried to do it a bit faster and.. in the end it was the same! 13- 14 min. mile.

I do the same thing: the 1st mile for me is a jog, stretch, jog, stretch. It seems to help.

Thank you all for responding to my question, thats why I love these boards so much :goodvibes Tomorrow and from now on I think I will dedicate more time to stretching and maybe trying new cross training to help as well. I think I am trying too hard to just fit in runs whenever possible without taking time to stretch enough or correctly even, thanks all :thumbsup2

Also hipporina and ladydooley I am lucky when I am going 12 mpm...we should be around the same time for the race I am sure :cutie: I am so glad I am not alone
