Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

I changed my avatar to the DISign that will be on the back on my lime green running singlet! If you see me, say Hello (as you run past - cuz I'm working on a 12 mpm pace). Oh, my relay partner two-foxes will have it on too!

Anyone else running the DL half as well? I'm just trying to figure out a training plan for the month of September. Half marathon this weekend, then the weekend before the race, I'm out of town (which makes my taper plan really easy), but I'm not sure what to do about the two weekends between. I figure next weekend, I'll do what my body thinks is okay... and then maybe try for 9-10 the next weekend? Not the greatest planning on my part, I know.

I'm not running the DL half but I am running a local half on Sept 12. I'm also looking at a 10K race on 9/26 in Pittsburgh. I am just counting that half as my long run for the week and not really changing anything. The Wine & Dine is really the same thing for me since I am concentrating on the January full.

The plan you have for the week after DL sounds good. Take a day or two off and if you aren't too sore go out and do a slower paced short run (3 or 4 miles) to make sure everything is good. If that jog feels good then go back to whatever plan you were using. If you are worried about the long run I think counting the DL half as you last long run would be fine and instead of doing another 10 miler do 5 milers on back to back days.

The biggest mistake I made training for my first full was concentrating too much on the long run instead of the total miles. If running the same distance over 5 days instead of over 4 means the long runs are shorter I think that is fine since by running the half you already have that long run in.

Good luck.

Hi everyone! I've been lurking on this thread for a while, and as the race is getting closer I find myself having a few more questions! I'm participating in the relay, and will be running the first half. This is my first race of any kind, and so despite the fact that its the shortest running option for the half, I'm still getting kind of nervous!

To help with the nerves, I've been trying to picture the exchange point when I'm done running and have begun to wonder-- how much fanfare do you think there will be at the relay exchange point? 'Cause when I'm honest with myself, as much as I am loving the training and the excitement of running, I started this for the characters and swag, and deep down, I'm still in it for the characters and the party afterwards! :rotfl2:

So....do you think there will be excitement at the exchange point and a chance for those who finished the first half of the relay to celebrate, or do you think most of that will be reserved for the actual finish line?

We're running a 1/2 on Saturday--not DL, just a small one.

Our plan is 6-8 next weekend, depending on how we feel.

9-11miles on the 18--though this is going to be weird. It's parents weekend at our DSs college, so we're planning on running 3, running the parents weekend 5k slowly just to participate, and then running another 3 or so back to our hotel. We'll see how it works.

Then 6 or so the weekend before.

Good luck on your races this weekend everyone!

I would say SOME excitement and entertainment. I am sure you have an announcer out there calling team numbers as they come into range of the relay. That will more than likely monopolize most or the activity... But I would expect music, food and drink while you move to the busses for the ride to Epcot.

Ummm...the typical beginner (who hasn't trained) probably can't run a 2:45 half marathon let alone walk it! I am one of those who hope to break that time running! But....

:woohoo:

I have been playing sports my whole life, so I'm always in 'some' sort of shape. I didn't walk too much. I ran till I got tired, then "rested" by walking for a minute or two. But I know I was slow because my cousin smoked me by a good 30 minutes!

Will do! :thumbsup2

Welcome to the conversation! I too am running the first half of the relay and while I've done a 5K each month since April - this will be my longest and biggest race!

I too have been visualizing the characters and look forward to seeing them on the race course. I hope there's some sort of character interaction at the relay point. I doubt I'll stop during the race to pose with characters but sure would like to after I'm done!

I'm running PhillyRnR 9/19. Cutting in damn close. :)

I'm running that too! I'm training for the full in January and using RnR and W&D as my long runs early in the season. I will only do about 7 miles on the weekend between.

Today has been great in preparing for the run...I just did 4 miles, but I ran all of it without any walking which is quite a big deal for me :goodvibes I got a waist pack with a pouch to keep my cell phone and junk and has a water bottle, I finished making the shirt I am going to run in and found a pair of lime green shorts I am tempted to buy....whoo that was a lot, but I am in a great mood and ready for the race!!!

If you think you can handle being more toward the 11 mpm mark, I would be happy to run with you. I can do the 10 mpm for a few miles, but cannot guarantee I would be able to "hang" for too long. :thumbsup2

Oh, and maybe firedancer or cewait can answer . . . are there pace groups and how would one go about finding the right one? I've run in a couple of the January races, but never seemed to "run into" a pace group....or maybe I was just too far back in the pack! (I would love to find a pace group to keep me going. I would be looking for about an 11mpm group - maybe a "little" faster!)

AmyBeth & M'Mommy -
I'm in for the 11ish group too! Be happy to hang with both of you! I've never run with a group either, but ran with the friend the other day and found it really enjoyable. And would be glad to offer whatever support to keep each other going.

Are you going to the WISH meet on Friday?

Don't fret. I have totally winged a race before! But not by choice. In '07 when I did the DL 1/2 I had only trained for 2 weeks total. I started training 10 weeks prior to the race, then injured my knee playing football. I could walk with a knee brace, but no running. It healed up enough to run about 2 weeks prior to the race, and because I had already paid for everything, I just trained for 1 week and did the race. I had a crappy finish time (like 2:45), but I still finished. I had a bum knee, next to no training, and death valley weather, but I pushed through! You'll be fine. :) If nothing else, just run till you're tired, then walk for a few, then run some more. That's the best advice I can give you as a rookie.

Hey now, watch that "crappy" stuff! LOL. It's all relative. ;)

I'm glad you commented though, I'm having perpetual problems w/ my calves and shins & am nervous about finishing, much less time. I was kicking but (again, all relative) at the Princess at a pretty steady 10.5 or so, then my right knee buckled at exactly the halfway point. I managed to get it working again but it tacked on about 25 minutes to my time & I finished in 2:44. I was about as mad as a wet hen! I'm hoping for a finish under 2:30 this time, but boy am I nervous about the lower legs. I'm thinking of taking this week off for some re-coup.

Thanks, Frank and Coach, for your comments/recommendations. I think I'll go out this weekend for a 10-miler and see how I feel. If I'm good, I'll tack on two more. If not, I'll stop. Then I'll sort out my last three week's plan after that.

My plan is not to overtrain (that would be a bad thing), but to train more than necessary, to ensure I'm ready for the long week before the half on my feet and the 5K in the morning.

Coach - I noticed you'll be staying at the BWV over the W&D Half weekend (lurking, yet, on another thread...). So will I...maybe I'll run into you. Literally!

Again, thanks for your thoughts and ideas. Throughout this whole thread.

Marathonmommy and bounceliketigger....So generous of you both to offer to run with me. I'd love to run with you...11 mpm is actually a safer bet for me since my training has fallen off a bit and my pace isn't what it used to be. There is definitely strength in numbers...it's always nice to have company. I am not sure if i'll get to the meet on Friday but we can stay in touch here. If you pm me with your email that might be good for staying in touch. I'm hoping that I'll be able to do this.

Me too, me, too! We should find each other for that one, too!

Yes, I am going to the Boma meet on Friday! Is that the one you are referring to? I am going to the meet, pic, and meal!

I'm an old timer here on the wish boards...done a few disney races in the past :). But I've been off the race circuit for about 1.5 years and this was to be a big deal for us to run together in WDW again, where it all started. Sooo...it's all very bitter sweet for me..thanks again! :grouphug:
I will PM both of you!

It's so exciting to see the connection going on here. This is why I love the DIS.

I am having a really bummer of a week. Had a portion of my big toe nail removed last Thursday and just got a closed shoe on yesterday. It wasn't bad on but smarts when i take it off. So it's been a week since I've run and now I'm afraid it'll hurt. I suppose having 2 babies hurt worse, but still.... I' kinda bummed out about it.

I'm really sorry about your toe-- that hurts for anyone much less a runner! But I couldn't help but laugh at the 2 babies reference. I use that so many times when I just think I can't bear something. It is so true! :cutie:

I'm glad you commented though, I'm having perpetual problems w/ my calves and shins & am nervous about finishing, much less time.

I am in a similar boat. I developed shin splints at the end of July and continued to run on them. After several weeks of pushing through the pain, I got to the point where I couldn't even walk without limping. My calf muscle was extremely tight, no amount of stretching helped. And my lower leg felt really weak. To make a long story short . . . after finally recognizing I needed help, I have been in physical therapy for a week and a half. My PT told me I can't run for two weeks and it is killing me. In the meantime, I've been hitting the stationary bike and eliptical machines at the gym. Hopefully that will help. I am anxious to get back to running, but understand that my leg needs time to heal. I am running the 8 mile leg of the relay. When I stopped running, my long run was 5.5 miles. I'm hoping I didn't lose too much, but am anxious to find out. I have five days until I can run again . . . not that I am counting.
