Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

Ok, my Dis Peeps: I'm starting to get a little worried. My long runs are getting harder and harder instead of easier and easier. Yesterday, I made the huge mistake of setting out at 2:00 pm - with heat in the 90's. The sun was so blazing hot, I could not mentally get over it! I called my husband 4 miles into the run to come get me. I felt like such a defeated, loser, wimp. I was supposed to do a 10 miler again during this run..which I barely squeaked out the previous week (had to walk much of the last 2 miles). I am really afraid this is a "mental block" - which, for me, can be tougher to get over than a physical one. I went out again and did about 5 more miles a couple of hours later, but it as sooo slow and I needed to take walking breaks with just the 5! Do any of you have "bad long run days" where you just can't get into it and actually don't make it? I've had bad ones before that I just trudged through, walking some or not. I really hope it was the heat, although I think I've run in much hotter this summer!

I am so glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue! I had one of those "bad run days" on Friday and it was awful. I've only done up to 6 recently, following an injury in March. I set out to do 8 in sneaks on pavement (I've been training in Vibrams on dirt mostly.) After 2 miles my toes hurt like crazy. I couldn't get a breathing pattern down, my heart was pounding, my mouth was constantly dry even tho I had water. The music was on, then off, then on, I had to walk ALOT.....in short it was a disaster. At 6.5 my toes hurt so badly and I was so frustrated, not to mention late, I had my DH pick me up! :scared1: I knew he was on his way out anyway so I just made things easier.

I've had super-great long & longer runs & really awful long and short ones. I tried last night & my calves were throbbing so I gave up. Feel totally defeated, but tomorrow a.m. I'm trying again. Those great days are just enough to keep me going, but WOW those bad days are tough to get over sometimes.:sad2:

Thanks for the "support"! I'm right there with ya'...I'm a Jersey girl, too (now transplanted in DE) with a hubby who does not understand my Disney obsession. Lots in common....

I felt this way during my run this afternoon :guilty: But I kept telling myself at least the half is at night, so I wont have the sun beating down on me even if it is hot...I just hope I get a kick in the butt on race day haha

Agreed...I'm a much better night runner. The sun beating down on me totally psyches me out! I try to go on shaded trails if I must go during the day. I will have to do so next time for sure!

I've been a bit nervous about running @ night. Do you go in your neighborhood? The early a.m. Is nice & cool, but getting up is rough!

Hope to see you @ the meet- definitely much in common!

cewait...
thanks again for the words of encouragement. I really hope I get to meet you at the wine and dine race. you have given me wonderful advice the past couple of months! Are you going to the boma meet?

I owe you a "sip" at the after party!

Mmmmm a sip

I am not 100% sure about our plans. We are arriving mid afternoon. Current plans are to use DME, so we are a little at the mercy of the system

I third this. I am not a very experienced runner, but I did the Disneyland Half Marathon in '07, and by 8am it was 95 degrees. I did the nighttime ToT13k the following year and instantly declared, "I love night races!" :p

Funny, I only entered after running a New Year's Eve 5k. I thought the idea of a night race was a little silly until I ran one

How many night races have you done total? I am a total novice runner, but out of the few races I have done, the nighttime runs were much more comfortable.

This wasn't directed at me but I have done a couple of night races (start after dark) and quite a few evening races (between 5pm and 7pm starts). Because I do almost all of my training in the summer after dark they feel pretty natural to me. There are some obstacles with the night races I've done but they were much smaller than what Disney puts on.

The issue with the night races I did was that some of the waterstops were unlit and it makes it hard to grab water in stride. There was also some visibility issues but that was because part of one of my night races went through an area that had some road construction and the surface wasn't great. It was harder to see any kind of potholes in the dark over this particular stretch. I am not concerned about either of these for the Wine & Dine because I can't see Disney not lighting the waterstops and Orlando roads are in better condition then N.E. Ohio roads for the most part.

The one "night" race I did was at 6:45 PM in the middle of June, 88 degrees. It was bad.

I am very much looking forward to a *no sun possible in the sky* race.

Don't be silly! This is a message board. If it's not a PM, all input is welcome. :)

Thanks for the insight. Again I am a novice runner, so all of your guys' stories are helpful.

They rock. IMO, anyway!

only one night race here. I have been in three adventure races where at least one event was held after dusk. Several evening races - though uncommon in this neck of the woods. For me the 5k was not unlike the start of a large winter race. Most start before sun up so there are nite-like for 30-45 minutes.

I agree that water stops should have some form of lighting. For the 5k it was sub freezing and real windy so water was not the issue.

I know several of us have talked about bringing some form of alternative lighting such as a bill lamp.

If I were trail running after dark I would definitely wear some auxiliary lighting. I believe that Disney will have enough light to see your footing. I even drove some of the course one morning pre-run last month just to get a feel for the lighting. There may be a few stretches with issues but I think that the mouse will provide light.

That does make a very big difference which I think people who have never run at night might not realize. Running in 80 degree heat and 80% humidity with the sun beating down on you feels very different then running in 80 degree heat and 80% humidity with no sun.

Yeah, I bet. I regularly run in 88 degrees after sundown. It's fine. Gross, but fine.

The only night race I have done was the ToT a year ago. I had no problems with any lighting issues, but despite it being at night, I still ended the race soaking wet. But still better than the blazing sun. I am looking for warmer weather in Florida than last January........

btw Frank, that was a great time in the 5K! I am dreaming of getting into the 21 minute zone one of these days

Soooo, I have REALLY slacked off and have not trained for 2 weeks. I don't know what it is, I could not get myself to do it. Then school started (I am a kindergarten teacher) and there was so much to do. After only 1.5 weeks of school I came home with a flu like cold and have been in bed since Saturday night. I plan to get back on it tomorrow. The longest I have gone so far is 5 miles and I have to run a little...walk a little...then run a little more. Am I really underestimating how hard this is going to be? Does anyone "wing" these races? Should I just try to be safe and walk the whole thing since I'm not prepared? Is there still time for me!? I wish I could just call it all off but my husband is doing the race too and he would die if I tried to quit. I talked him into doing this thing so I can't even talk to him about my concerns...what should I do?:confused3

Don't fret. I have totally winged a race before! But not by choice. In '07 when I did the DL 1/2 I had only trained for 2 weeks total. I started training 10 weeks prior to the race, then injured my knee playing football. I could walk with a knee brace, but no running. It healed up enough to run about 2 weeks prior to the race, and because I had already paid for everything, I just trained for 1 week and did the race. I had a crappy finish time (like 2:45), but I still finished. I had a bum knee, next to no training, and death valley weather, but I pushed through! You'll be fine. :) If nothing else, just run till you're tired, then walk for a few, then run some more. That's the best advice I can give you as a rookie.
