Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

We got new shoes yesterday and, against popular advice, went ahead and wore them for our 8 mile run. It went awesome! I can't believe the race is getting so close. I am so excited!

There are lots of things that are rules of thumb that one can kind of deviate from..... through the web I have a hard time saying certain things are OK and some are not OK to break because, well not everyone can 'break' the rule. Frankly, I have no issue with the new shoe thing. I personnaly can feel if the shoe will work well or not within the first 15 minutes of wearing. On occation I have found a seam in the new rides that was not expected and come home with a blister.... other than that I know where you are coming from. I love new shews.

Whenever I call the number listed on the 1/2 marathon website I get zero help with the questions I have, I really hate feeling unprepared but I guess I am just going to have to wing it when I get down there and hope for the best :rolleyes1

I made a shirt to wear for the race today...I was laughing so hard at the idea of being a "turtle" so I made a shirt that has a turtle on it and wrote "slow & steady finishes the race" I will take a picture and share it with you guys so you can see it and maybe recognize me at the race hopefully :thumbsup2

You can ask here about most questions. Obviously we are operating off similar inforamtion pools as you. The good news is that I would expect the race program to be out in the next week or so. I am also a planner and want to understand every detail but I also think it a little fun and exciting to run a race with little knowledge. I actaully hold PR's in the full and 10k races where I had almost zero knowledge of the course pre-race.

Very excited. Ran a local 10K today and honestly it wasn't my best run, I did struggle a little bit. HOWEVER, I had a great time. My goal was 1:06:00 and I did it in 1:09:09 :) There were a couple of very long, steep hills, I was quite warm and did get winded rather quickly today but overall I beat my 10K time from RFTT last year by 15 minutes. So I can't be too disappointed in that.

It was a santioned event so I'm going to use it for my corral placement :) Got a medal and all is good!

Great job! My first and only 10k so far was super hilly, so I feel your pain, but it sounds like you did great! I have another 10k in 2 weeks, so hopefully I can beat my old PR too!

Tonight I set out on my longest run yet, 8 miles. It went pretty well, and I used the GU I got earlier this week for the first time. I tried the chocolate outrage, and it was super yummy. It tasted like a melted chocolate bar! The only problem was that it made me thirsty and I was already running low on my powerade. I don't know if it was the GU, or the fact that the sun went down and it was cooler, but my second 4 miles were a lot easier than the first 4!

I leave for the race a month from tomorrow!

Did you take the gel with water? You really want to take some water or if all you have with you is Powerade take it with a little of that. It will help dilute the gel and may help with the thirst factor. In a race I make sure I take my gel just as I approach a water stop.

Ok, my Dis Peeps: I'm starting to get a little worried. My long runs are getting harder and harder instead of easier and easier. Yesterday, I made the huge mistake of setting out at 2:00 pm - with heat in the 90's. The sun was so blazing hot, I could not mentally get over it! I called my husband 4 miles into the run to come get me. I felt like such a defeated, loser, wimp. I was supposed to do a 10 miler again during this run..which I barely squeaked out the previous week (had to walk much of the last 2 miles). I am really afraid this is a "mental block" - which, for me, can be tougher to get over than a physical one. I went out again and did about 5 more miles a couple of hours later, but it as sooo slow and I needed to take walking breaks with just the 5! Do any of you have "bad long run days" where you just can't get into it and actually don't make it? I've had bad ones before that I just trudged through, walking some or not. I really hope it was the heat, although I think I've run in much hotter this summer!

I would also add that one should avoid Sport Drink at the stops where you take in a gel.

Actually, I celebrate the really stinky long runs in training. I know from experience that I am gaining a mental tool set that will help drive me through the tough times in the race. Also, everyone has a bad day. If you have one or two bad long runs in training you never seem to have a bad race day. On the other hand I have had a really bad race day - coming off a set of near perfect long runs. Not saying this is everyone but that is what I find.

Chalk yesterday up to starting off in the heat, dehydrating badly and not recovering fully for the second run. If it is any help, I also tanked a long run on Saturday... having to make it up yesterday.

Kristy: Forgive me for being a little out of the loop, but I just noticed the ages of all the children in your signature and took a brief peek at your website. What very special people you and your husband are and what a wonderful family you have! Will they all be coming to WDW for the race?
And I thought my family was large because I had 4 children within 5 years. :rotfl: The fact that 3 of them have or will be getting married within 5 months this year (May thru Oct), is what has keep me out of the DIS board loop!

This might be a dumb question, but I haven’t found the answer on the official site or in here. If we park at WWoS for the start of the race, will there be transportation from EPCOT back to WWoS after the party? What would you do park at WWoS or EPCOT?

I am thinking a better plan would be to park at Epcot and take the bus to the start. That keeps you closer to your ride home post race plus keeps you out of the inevitable traffic issues that they will have with closing off half the road into WWoS for the start. But like you I am not seeing any logistics on this. I expect the race program in the next couple weeks so we will know for sure. Most point to point races offer pre and post race x-portation... Hopefully this will be clear soon

Oh and it is far from a dumb question.

I am pretty sure there will not be transportation back to the WWos after the half. I'd take Charles advice and park at Epcot and head to a host resort to get a bus to the start.

I hope everyone's running is going according to plan. I had 3 5K's this weekend (2 Saturday and 1 Sunday) and managed a new 5K PR, my first ever below 18:00. It was a fast course and both other times I ran the race I set a new PR but never in a million years thought it would be under 18:00. I got a message from the person who I am staying with that they got my Magical Express tags so they are on the way. I can't believe a week from Wednesday I'll be on a plane on the way down.

Good job on the 10K cobbler.

Hipporina, I ended up running a half marathon this spring in new shoes. On my last run before the half I noticed they were on their way out and didn't want to do a race in them. I got a new pair of the same shoes the day before the race at the expo and just wore them that day as I walked around DC with some friends to break them in and they caused me no issues in the half the next day. I think as long as they are a new version of shoes you know work you don't really have to worry too much. I wouldn't wear a brand new model of shoe for a race but an updated version of a shoe I know isn't that big of a leap.

Frank, nice job on the PR. If you're leaving a week from Wednesday, your vacation must be like a MONTH long, no? I'm jealous!

I was thinking the same thing.....

Hello everyone, have been pretty much of a lurker here, but wanted to touch base and wish everyone luck in their last 4 plus weeks of training. I just did a 10 mile race this weekend in Flint Mi and it had so many hills that I think 3 more miles of a pretty flat course is now within reach.

I have enjoyed reading everyones comments, so thank you.

Tom

I felt this way during my run this afternoon :guilty: But I kept telling myself at least the half is at night, so I wont have the sun beating down on me even if it is hot...I just hope I get a kick in the butt on race day haha

I am not so much worried about knowing about the course, but things like transportation are sort of stressing me out - but I think I will figure that out closer to race day. One thing I wanted to ask is what time are you guys probably heading to WWoS at? I wasnt sure how early to get there

Also I tried calling that number because during my registration I based my predicted finish time off of a 10k and I calculated it incorrectly. So I was worried I would have issues picking up my packet, bib, etc. But they guy told me I should "be fine" but I wasnt very comforted by that haha

Starting with the last first...

Make sure to bring your 10k results with you to the expo. Before you should get a feel for how well coralled you are. But if you bring it and just ask you may get pushed up one anyway. All it takes is a few moments in the runner relations line at the expo. If the line is too long and you are in a close corall you will be OK. - not to sound as discomforting as the ananomous voice on the phone.

Without having the program out, I would assume the RD wants as many folks as possible at WWos before the 1-1.5 hour pre-race mark. So that would equate to a 7-9 bussing window (maybe 6-9). I will more than likely be out there by 7-7:30 if that is the window. Not sure why I am an early bird but it gives me time to rest and get in the game.

Again, I am sure that once the crew clears out the DL half we will be receiving tons of info.

cewait...
thanks again for the words of encouragement. I really hope I get to meet you at the wine and dine race. you have given me wonderful advice the past couple of months! Are you going to the boma meet?

I owe you a "sip" at the after party!
