I don't think that there is only ONE true test of character.

Some ways to judge, IMHO, is what they do when no one is looking (do you do the right thing when no one is there to give you kudos).

Who their friends and associates are (birds of a feather and all of that)...

How do they treat people everyday? Are they consistently kind, respectful, generous (not necessarily with material things) honest, trustworthy?

It used to be said that disorders of Axis II were character flaws, or the result of character flaws. That sort of thinking has been debunked because character cannot be measured, eh?

I totally agree! Last night I saw a customer treating a store clerk so bad. It got me thinking about character.

I agree with this too. It's not the only way to judge character, but it's a good one.

I agree with all that has been posted. I think another way to see someone's true character is to observe how a person plays games (board games, physical games, arcade, Wii, etc.). You can learn a lot about a person observing game play. It was one of my dating litmus tests.

I agree witht this. I used to think it was how they treated the waitress/janitor thing, but I know someone who is nice to them, yet when the doors are closed, it's another story. I think it's because if they are in a restaurant they are in public and want to be seen as nice to everyone, but in private when they don't have anyone to impress, their true nature shows.

Sure, anyone who treats people in the service industry poorly is a jerk, no doubt about it; but not everyone who is "nice" to them is nice by nature.

I don't think there is any one thing, it's probably a lot of things. An important one in my book is if someone can laugh at themselves or not. I think it says a lot if they can't.

A lot of good answers here. I'd like to add that I think someone of good character doesn't desert his or her friends or relatives during hard times. You know those people who are only nice to others when everything is rosey? In other words, they are there for the good times and bad. I keep thinking of Charles Ingles from Little House on the Prairy---he had what I would consider good character.

I think one of the tests is whether people keep their promises. Do they betray confidences? Do they step on other people to make themselves look good? Do they do what they say they're going to do? That's what character means to me.

I believe a true test to someone's character is to give them a little bit of power or placed in a situation where they have power. The true person will show up
