I have read before about a DVC cash discount being available. What would the circumstances have to be in order to receive this discount?

Thanks!

Book a cash room at any DVC and if DVC anticipates that these rooms will be open then you would get a cash discount for the member staying in that room. I have heard usually at the 6 month window or after. In Febuary I booked an SSR GV and was able to get a Friday night at the discount right away and then the Saturday became available earlier this month. This is for my stay 12/03/05--12/16/05. I figure I got the discount so quikly because SSR isn't sold out yet. Susan

It has to do with the expected occupancy of the resort. If DVC's historical reservation trends show that they will not be able to rent all rooms to members wishing to stay on points, they will release rooms for booking at the cash discount. The discount could be made available 10 months or 4 months before your trip--there's really no way to forecast when DVC's data would indicate the member booking shortfall.

I've read that you can book a room through DVC at the full cash level, and the 25% discount will be automatically applied to your booking if trends dictate. If you don't want to risk that, you simply have to call at regular intervals. I wouldn't count on getting the discount often at the more popular resorts (BCV, BWV, VWL) or during the very busy DVC seasons (Food & Wine fest, Thanksgiving to New Year's). Your best shot is probably for weekend nights at OKW or SSR.

Note that when the Member Discount is used you get the normal DVC housekeeping schedule, NOT nightly cleanings. And there is a requirement that a DVC member be staying in the room booked at the member discount. In other words, you cannot book more than one room at the cash discount price for a single date, and you cannot book it as a rental / gift where the member is not present.

For the last 3 years, I've had no problem getting the 25% member discount or an AP rate for weekend nights in May at OKW, 1 bedroom. It's 48 points per night, using the discount is much cheaper than renting extra points. I'm paying $330 incl tax for one night this year, so that's about $6.88 per point.

Thanks for the information. It's probably not looking good for the discount in our case, since I would be looking at a studio either the weekend before or after President's week. I would imagine that they would expect the resorts to be at full capacity that time of year.

As long as it's a weekend, I'd give it a shot. It's worth a couple of phone calls...

Its after 6nights at the VWL, before we move to 6nights at BCV
