In updating a kitchen...

Are there any reasons to do the floor first vs. the countertops? Or should counters get done first then the floors???

I'm just curious - we are looking at doing both, just probably not at the same time...(darn things cost $$)

The cabinets are still wonderful, a beautifull golden oakl!!! So no changes there.

The floor...getting nasty.
The countertops...will definitely look outdated once there is a new floor.

I am most concerned about - which way is it easier to match colors??? Or should we pick them out at the same time, and then stagger the projects.

We just completely remodeled our kitchen and DH did the floor first then we had the countertops done; however, we ripped everything to studs so that might make a difference. We also did all new cabinets so we really had to do the floor first (we added an island)......I'm probably not much help but that's what we did

We built our MA home in 2005. When we did the kitchen, the hardwood floors was the very last thing done to the house. Not sure if that is the same for a kitchen renovation. Counters were all installed prior to the floors.

We did pick everything out at the same time. Cabinets and flooring were picked to match and we then selected a counter color by Corian to pull together the cabinets and flooring.

I would do the floors last so that they are not damaged at all by the installation of the counters (workers constantly walking on it, heavy tools or other installation equipment being dropped on it).

I would love to do hardwood floors...and I've been trying to convince DH for YEARS...and, since this isn't the hill I'm going to die on, we will probably be going with a congoleum.

bballmom56 - I had not thought of the counter installation damaging the new floors...so that is definitley something to keep in mind! Thanks!!

We did a premium congoleum vinyl floor. And then put a dent in it when moving appliances into place. One that didn't raise back up. Bugs the heck out of me everytime I see it.

We did floor then counters, but had the floor covered throughout the reno process. We kept our old cabinets too.
