In total shock right now...

It won't satisfy his critics; only the public at large who know that he is a good and caring president.

Well, I don't think he's a good president and I'm a very vocal critic of him, but I'm very pleased with his statement.

We (his critics) really aren't that unreasonable.

I would REALLY like to se Blanco's statement now. :rolleyes1

Aren't all you other critics glad that we have Dawn here to speak for us ? :rotfl:

Frankly, I'm impressed. Maybe President frat boy is growing up after all. Congratulations, George...First "presidential" thing I've seen out of that office in WAY too long.

My thoughts exactly. He suddenly looks like a leader.

It's the people anticipating a negative response from liberals that look petulant now.

Just like Robin said last night "darned if they do, darned if they don't" - can't win either way.

I would too.

I did not hear it but apparently CNN has Ms Blanco saying on a mike she did not realize was "live" that she should have asked for help earlier.

I would like her to say the same thing directly to her citizens. Not sure if she has the "balls" to do it on camera. In fact I know she doesn't.

I am shaking my head because I don't believe that it ALL is his fault. Now are the mayor & governor who refused to let federal aid or the red cross or anyone else who wanted to go into their state to help absolved from their screw ups?

I heard him taking responsibility for the federal governments role. In addition he mentioned failures in "all areas of government". I think that as even more information is forth coming, the state and local gov'ts will bear the brunt of the responsibility. I just heard that AmTrak wanted to run a special train into NOLA before the hurricane, but it was refused.

Isn't Amtrak funded by the federal government?

I think it was a good (and smart) thing to do. I lost a lot of respect for Bush over these past few weeks but he just gained some back. I am glad that he is taking some responsibility and hopefully that will translate into positive changes in regards to future federal response to disaster.

I have to agree -- at this point.

Don't get me wrong, this is the first step, and if it means change, then I'm really glad.

But these are words. Words. If things stay the same, and people just comfort themselves with "he's a good guy, he apologized", then, :confused3

For me, this is no isolated incident, and so I want more than words; I want to see that he is sincere with actions.

So we'll see. Whoever said people want blood, get over yourself. I don't want blood. I just want a president I can respect, and I can trust, and I can feel secure with.

Nothing new.
Really? Who was the guy that had coals heaped on his head last year for not admitting making any mistakes with regard to Iraq when questioned on the matter?

His approval ratings weren't so low then.

I agree. This has nothing to do with him being a caring  president. It has everything to do with his sinking poll numbers. It is a little late.

Well, good for him. It's about time. I guess the sight of dead bodies in wheelchairs, screaming babies who've had nothing to eat, bodies in nursing homes, etc. kinda wakes a fella up.

Good first step. Now, let's see what he does about it.

However, does anyone honestly think he'd take responsibility for a screw-up if his poll numbers weren't tanking?

Sorry, but the numbers are just about as bad now as they were at the peak of the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal in the Summer of 2004. He also can't run again, so poll numbers are meaningless politically.

:wave2: That would be me. I don't need to get over myself. Why are you always so nasty to me? I was voicing my opinion as you just did. I said 'most' not all his critics. I wasn't directing it to you personally. It was to those critics that no matter what Bush does, it's "too little too late", politicians and others who think no matter what he ever does on any subject, it's wrong and not enough.

You know, you and I may not agree on Bush, but we have at least 2 other things in common, Disney and our religion and I certainly have nothing against you.

If his poll numbers weren't tanking, that would probably mean that he didn't screw up.

And I'm trying to figure out how Bush is responsible for the bodies in the nursing homes. You are talking about the one where the caregivers left them to die before the storm came, right?

Well, as someone who voted for him both times...I am glad he stepped up. However, time for the mayor and the governor to also. I'm sick of hearing people blame it all on him.

The Mayor was on Tim Russert this Sunday and he did say that he's sure he could have done better. Good for him. And good for the President.

Governor Blanco, we're waiting on you!
