The only movie theater in the South Lake Tahoe area, the Heavenly Village Cinemas, is now closed for good. Unless you have a car and are able to muster the courage to drive to theaters nearly 20 miles away, the only way local South Lake Tahoe residents can see ANY releases (not just Disney releases) is to wait until the hype is dead when movies go to a streaming service. Streaming CANNOT and WILL NOT replace IN PERSON, REAL CINEMA.

that's lousy-noone that is familiar with the area would want to drive from south shore to north shore in the bad weather (or anytime it's flooded with tourists). similar situation with a ski area nearish to us in idaho-they had a nice little movie theater that served several little communities as well as the year round tourists but a developer came in and bought up a bunch of the downtown area tearing down the movie theater along with a bunch of other cool and funky shops. now the closest one is over 45 miles away :mad:

Yeah… that’s bad. I guess this generation will NOT get to experience the magic of ACTUAL REAL MOVIEGOING… streaming DOESN'T COUNT. If you have a movie theater in your area… support it as much as possible! Even if studios do simultaneous releases on streaming, pick the theaters!

I always thought the local in SLT was bad for a local. Having to pay for parking or finding a side street to walk from, dealing with the tourists crowded in the area and the traffic.

Winter time is the time for Movies but I certain wouldn’t want to try to the valley with any treating inclement weather, so it is sad there will no longer be a place to go.

While there are SOME benefits of seeing a movie in a theater...
* Large screen (although the truly large screens have gone out of vogue in favor of the multi-screen cinemas)
* True surround audio

Streaming has MANY more IMO...
* COST. It costs the same amount for one person as it does for 10. To say nothing about the snack & drink savings. The last time DW & I went, we had free tickets and it still cost us ~$40 for popcorn & drinks.
* Ability to pause/rewind if necessary (bathroom, snack run, drinks, etc)
* Adjustable sound level
* No interference from others (crying kids, cell phones, conversations, etc)
* Watch when you want (on demand start time).

That being said, there are some movies that ARE better in theaters... Star Wars and Titanic come to mind, I'm sure there are others. But, IMO, they are few and far between.

It's a bummer that your theater closed. We still have one fairly close to where I live now, but I've in places where they were tough to get to as well.

Streaming at home can be nice, but it's definitely not the same as actually going to the movies.

Clearly not enough people in the area were going, so it wasn't a sustainable business. No matter how much some people like to go, if it's not profitable the business will close. That's why fewer and fewer people live in reasonable distance to a drive in theater, too.

Unfortunately, fewer people in general are going out to the movies and a lot of theaters are exploring more creative options to draw people in.

I would be sad if our local theater closed.

My wife and I were ones who went to the movies extremely often by most standards.

For a time we went multiple times a week, every week.

Then we had kids and we slowed to once a week.

And this is despite having a dedicated home theater with a 95" screen, great sound, total darkness if wanted, ability to pause, and comfortable seating.

I still wanted the theater experience.

For years we were a "corporate customer" with Regal Cinemas and bought tickets in bulk, saving $6+ per ticket by buying 50 tickets at a time. We also have made great use of our Regalator cup, https://www.disboards.com/threads/theaters-are-showing-tv-shows-now.3902012/#post-64437193, having saved thousands in drink costs.

Having said all that, I have not bought corporate tickets the last couple years because the choice of movies is just so sad.

What we have enjoyed is the Regal Mystery Movie series. Once a month or more often, Regal shows a $5 movie. They don't tell you what it is and you don't know what the movie is until it starts playing. There are places on the internet were people theorize as to the movie and are usually correct so you can get an idea if you want.

Last night was Nuremberg.

We have seen some great movies, like last night, and some real stinkers and a lot in between. Many we were pleasantly surprised by and would have never picked to see at the theater or at home.

The movie industry was being impacted by streaming but covid accelerated that impact. I don't think it will be long before very few big budget movies are made a year and physical movie theaters become as rare as drive in theaters. I don't think movie theaters will go completely away but like travel agents, the industry will be completely reshaped by the internet.

I'm in a generation that got to experience actual real moviegoing ... did it all the time as a kid, teen, and college student. I'll take streaming almost any day over an actual theater. Pausing, bathroom breaks, drink beer or wine with the movie and no worries about getting home, whatever snacks or dinner we want during the movie, have a nice little fire going in the fireplace if it's winter, the cost of going to the movies anymore, no noise from other theater goers, no risk of getting shot. Just all those little things add up to make streaming much more enjoyable for me.

The exception is I'll happily go to a theater on DCL, though on the Treasure that didn't work out since they were so small and were filled to capacity so quickly.

But, I'm sorry that it's becoming more difficult for you to do something you enjoy.

I used to love going to movies... now I have a home theater, and much prefer that experience. Better popcorn (with real butter!), no one talking/playing on a phone/kicking my seat, drinks, potty, pause, rewind...

Sorry your theater is no more, though.

I do like going to the theater as I like being able to watch a movie without a child or pet interrupting me (and I love movie theater popcorn) but they have priced me out.

I haven’t been inside a movie theater for many years. Between the loud sounds from the speakers and the behavior of the audience, it’s not worth it to me anymore. I just wait until I can watch them at home.

I feel bad for the employees who lose their jobs and for the independent theater operators who lose their business. I could try to mitigate some of the noise with earplugs, but that doesn’t stop the bright cell phone screens and people getting up and down throughout the movie. I think part of it is due to reduced attention spans. Very few people have the patience to sit still for an hour or two to watch a movie after consuming so many brief video clips online. So they have to do something, anything, even if that activity ruins the experience for others.
