IN SHOCK! xbox360 on ebay

I am amazed that people will pay that kind of money for a gaming system.

I have got to be missing something? :confused3

Just saw the best scam yet.

Pictured XBox 360 premium with games.

Description:

You are bidding on a rare e-mail address wesellxbox360@...

The bid was $125 with 3 minutes to go. Wait until this poor sap figures out he/she just bid on only the e-mail address.

Unbelievable! :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

There is one born every minute. This was a genius marketing move on Gates' part. Wait just about 2 months and it will be easy to get one after xmas, then no one will care that you were one of the firsts to have it.

I also can't imagine what kind of message or priorities it's setting if these are parents bidding this kind of money for xmas presents for their children.

I tried to talk Dh into putting his on ebay and he said that 2500-3500 is just not enough for what he went through to get it. I am thinking it was... :rotfl2:

He said everyone in line talked about it and no one was willing to sell there spot. I was like for $10,000 would you. He said at that amount he would ahve to have the 100's in his hand and a pen to tell if they were real!! :rotfl2:

OMG that's horrible.

I saw on Ebay a new video game that was suppose to come out and they were selling only the empty box - I thought someone is NOT going to read the fine print and be awfully mad when they receive an empty box .... :rotfl:

I would NEVER EVER buy an expensive video game system off Ebay - what if it doesn't work - you have no receipt and would be stuck with it.

OMG - I am so glad I have never done the Ebay thing. I work to hard for my money to get taken for a ride like that.

I did buy a PS2 form ebay. Glad I bought the insurance! It came damaged. My son was devastated. After I filed the claim and knew I would be getting the money in 6-8 weeks, I took him to walmart and bought a new system for him.

Never again!

ebay is great for small hard to find things, but that's about it for me!

I was just looking and saw a completed Buy it Now for $250...

Picture and everything, said XBox360 Premium package.. etc.

So I'm thinking... what is up? :confused3

And I read further and it says "make sure you read all of this before bidding.... you are buying a RAFFLE TICKET for a CHANCE TO WIN an XBox360". :rotfl2:

I hope that guy who bid the $250 knew what he was doing!!!

OMG - that's even worse. I bet that bidder did not read the FINE PRINT - OMG, can you imagine when they get a raffle ticket in the mail - what a scam!!!

Are all these ebay sellers that are actually scamming people getting away with it because they DO put what they are selling in their description and people are just NOT paying attention to it????

There is one born every minute. This was a genius marketing move on Gates' part. Wait just about 2 months and it will be easy to get one after xmas, then no one will care that you were one of the firsts to have it.

First, it was a mistake on Microsoft's part, not a brilliant marketing move. They fully intended to have three times as many systems available on release date, but delays in getting the design finalized kept them from starting manufacture until later than they had anticipated. Their choices were to delay the promised release, skipping a Christmas release date, or not have enough systems. If they could sell four or five million now, they'd love to do that.

Second, Microsoft sold them all for the same amount of money. They see no additional profit because someone sold their XBox for three times the list price on eBay.

Now, I'm no Microsoft apologist, but the thought that this was a huge scam on MS's part is just wrong.

Third, plenty of people DO care that they were among the first to get it. Just like some people don't even understand the words "Breakfast with Cindy in the Castle" and yet others will get up at 4am Pacific time to make a phone call and spend $30 per person on a bad breakfast with a very pretty woman wearing a costume and get all excited. You know what I don't get, I don't get why anyone would spend thousands of dollars on a Disney vacation and then stand in line to get an autograph from someone wearing a costume. I don't get it. But I don't think those people are foolish, just that they have very different priorities during a Disney trip than I do.

Frankly, I'm shocked at the amount of judgement and arrogance shown by a bunch of people whose hobby is as misunderstood as Disney is for people whose hobby is console games.

I agree that this couldn't be a marketing move by Microsoft... because like you said, they aren't getting the incredible amounts of money that are being spent on ebay.

I don't really think this is a "judgement" or "arrogance" in regards to those who love to play video games. I honestly, have just marvelled at the amount of money and the large amounts of time people spend on a hobby that I know nothing about. It's interesting to me to hear about things like this. We also all seem to be amused at finding the obvious scams on ebay.

I think there was a very small minority who made seemingly "judgemental" comments. I do not consider myself one of them.

I don't see a lot of "judging" as you call it going on. I think people are only questioning why someone would spend double or more to buy it on ebay and risk being scammed when in a couple months it will be available for the retail price. I don't judge people for that I just feel I personally would rather spend the money on something else.... like a Disney trip.... afterall you are on the DISBoards not a video game forum. So to compare spending money on a Disney trip as opposed to a video game system is not a fair comparison given the forum you are on.

In fact you said it yourself that people have different priorites. I would not dare to go on a video game forum and bash them for spending money on a video game system. Or question them for the amount of money they choose to spend on such a system. To each their own.

I don't have children but have a 5 year old nephew and seeing the look on his face when Buzz gave him a high five or how he blushed when Minnie kissed his cheek are priceless and I would pay for those memories a thousand times over. Those memories are the ones I will always treasure not the ones of him playing video games. I think his parents would agree with me on that. But then once again you are on the DISBoards and this is where people come to discuss their love of Disney not their love of video games.

Had I known I could have tripled my money I might have considered standing in line to get the Xbox and then resell it on ebay. It would just pay for more of those wonderful Disney memories. :flower:

The marketing strategy has nothing to do with making money on resale's thru Ebay... the strategy is to creat a frenzy and a huge demand for a product that might otherwise only appeal to a certain percentage of the population. Suddenly they are impossible to find and now everyone wants an Xbox 360. I'm not killing Microsoft... its a tried and true strategy and many companies do it. Don't kid yourself... Microsoft knew exactly what it was doing when they created this xbox shortage. They couldn't buy the publicity they are getting now... just look how many threads are on the DIS alone about the xbox.

Agreed...kinda like the Cabbage Patch Dolls in the 80's. Unfortunatley that backfired for them when the warehouse the dolls were being held in burned to the ground.

I appreciate your replies, crisi. I have been feeling like there is judgment in some of the other replies - the why would you spend $400 on a game system ones. I don't buy on ebay, and will keep looking in stores. I would like to get an Xbox 360 for DS, 13. He has been saving his money and offered to pay for it all himself. I spent more than the price of an Xbox for my DD to play a sport at school this year, and my other DD does an acting workshop which costs over twice the cost of the Xbox. My DS is not into clothes as his 2 sisters are. I do not spend much on him, and he is a great kid. Why shouldn't I buy him an Xbox for Christmas, or at least pay for half? That is what he and his friends are into.

Fond memories can come from ANYTHING that makes your kids happy!

- I'll always remember my son's enchantment when he rode in the front of the monorail for the first time at age 3.

- I always remember the same kid - now 21 years old who just grinned ear to ear when we rode up front of the monorail this past May.

- I remember my 16 year olds excitement at going with his dad and brother to pick up their 360's the other night. He had a BLAST...

And right now I've got 8 teenage boys playing on the two systems .. laughing and joking..

But secretly I wish I could sell one of those systems... I want a pop up camper!! :rotfl2:

And you work for whom and know this how? Because I work for a component supplier for the XBox and my husband in works in the industry and was deeply involved in the launch. I'm not kidding myself, I know, this is not what MS intended. Unless they lied to their suppliers and lied to their vendors, and backed up those lies with over stocking their inventory of parts and writing contracts. Possible, but that would be really expensive and open themselves up to lawsuits for mere marketing hype.

As far as judgemental, the word "insane" has been used. So has "there is one (fool) born every minute." As well as "I hope my kids never...." Forgive me if I find those implications judgemental.

Checked Ebay a few minutes ago and anyone can get this system at a very fair price now ! I saw systems end at $500 & under ! with SOOOOOOOOOooooooooo many systems for sale, they are now afordable ! I think the people who timed their auctions to end yesterday morning (risky if you ask me, they couldn't have really even had the system yet to start the auction for a one day sale to end yesterday morning/early afternoon) made a killing ! the rest who jumped on the bandwagon will be disappointed !

The "I hope my kids never..." is exactly true. It's not judgemental, it's just my hope for my kids. I hope that they never want me to spend this kind of money for a gaming system.

Kind of like how *I hope* they never get into horseback riding because it's insanely expensive. I hope they pick a less expensive hobby.

That's all the comment was meant to imply. That I hope I won't have to spend insane amounts of money for something like this. $400-$500 is a different story, but not 2 GRAND. My parents would have laughed in my face had I asked them to spend 2 grand on a gaming system when I was younger.

I'd spend $2 grand on a trip to Disney though... because that involves my enjoyment too :rotfl:
