We are driving to Florida in the beginning of Oct. with our 4 yr. old daughter and almost 2 yr old son. We are thinking of staying at the Howard Johnson Maingate East. What are your opinions on this hotel?
Thanks for any help you can give
Jenn

Jenn,

More than happy to forward this previous report:

My wife and I have stayed at the HJME several times (I think 5 now) and kind of like it. Note, when we go as a family, we like to go cheap, as we spend precious little time at the hotel and like to save the bucks for other things.

The hotel is what it is, a hotel. Rooms in my opinion are not fancy but adequet. A little dark, and the bathrooms were clean but standard. Good location to the parks, plenty of restaurants and convenience stores without walking more than two minutes.

A STRONG suggestion: This is a 550+ room hotel. We've always stayed in the same area and I've heard people both on this board and at the hotel complain about other areas of the hotel. If it were me, I'd pay the extra five to ten bucks (with patience and persistence, we've always paid five) to get the "double deluxe." This gets you a microwave and fridge, which may or may not have value to you. But it gets you a "pool" view, which means you face into the pools rather than out to the highway or parking lot.

Second, request ground floor, not second floor. Minimal stairwells means if you're in the wrong place, it can take you five minutes to walk to your car that's parked right under your room.

Third, there are two pools, one with a bar and one without. Request to be near the pool with no bar (may I suggest room 8114 or there abouts?). The pool with the bar also has the hot tub. This pool is usually crowded early morning and night, meaning no place to sit. You'll wake up to the noise of swimming children in the morning and screaming drinkers at night.

We found the back pool quiet and peaceful and really, really enjoyed relaxing there.

My two cents: A quality "budget" motel. In reviewing my previous opions, I don't think I stressed enough that it's a good place to hang out, with a game room near by for the kids, and good proximity to a ton of stuff. But get the double delux and stay away from the bar pool.

We have stayed there twice, and would not hesitate to go back. We enjoyed our stay there very much. It's very standard, but for the money, you can't go wrong.

I stayed there with my kids about a year ago for about $26 a night. No frills, but it was clean. My kids loved the kiddie pool. I would stay there again.

Thanks for your opinions. We will be booking a room in the near future.

Does anyone recall approximately how old the hotel is? Do the rooms look like they have been renovated in the last 10 years? How big is the bathroom area? Thanks for all the help.

I'm afraid I can't answer your questions too well. I don't know how old it is, but we noticed the exterior had been spruced up since the last time we were there. The outside of the buildings were freshly painted and the landscaping was very nice. The room we had wasn't just redone or anything, but it was certainly acceptable. The bathroom itself is small. Just the toilet and tub. The sink and vanity is outside of the bathroom and not too bad, pretty standard.

We will be at the HJMGE Feb.13-21st. I'll post my opinion when I get back. I am really nervous about it. But this board is encouraging.

Don't be nervous bscs! We loved it. We're not ultra picky about things though. Don't know if you are or not. We went not expecting a whole lot, and there certainly not bells and whistles but For the $$ you can't go wrong. We thought it was a very enjoyable stay. I hope you have a wonderful trip!!!

Thank you Dawn I feel better now. I'm not picky I was just mainly worried about bugs and it being dirty.

BSCS, you're welcome. If you think of it, let me know how you liked it when you get back.
