Impromptu Disney trip?

Id say go for it. Check VRBO there are some Bonnet Creek offering for $400 for 3 nights. Rental car rates today on Costco were running $69 for a 4 day mid size rental. You have passes so no out of pocket expense. Its the last year for the Osborne lights. Go and see the gingerbread houses at the different hotels. In fact I would not tell the kids surprise them by saying you are going somewhere else instead.

Too bad Disney does not do wait list for ADR.

Yes I have done a super uber fast trip in June this year I hung up with talking to DVC member services after making my room reservation and headed to the airport to catch my flight.

Go for it what do you have to loose. you could spend 4 days staring at the same 4 walls of your home or spend it at WDW.

yes the hands down worst airline I have ever ridden in for leg space is Spirit Airlines, talk about no leg room, I do prefer delta as they do seem to give me all the leg room i need, but over all frontier in a pitch isn't half bad. Well as long as the person in front of you doesn't try to lean back that is. Than the knee in the persons back battle begins

We almost always do last-minute trips, traveling from Maine. One year, I received a job offer on a Wednesday morning and DH realized it'd be at least 9 months before I had any available vacation time... we were in WDW by early Sunday afternoon! Great trip, too! DD22 and I just returned from a trip planned in September. Regarding ADRs, we made only one, for Boma. We were able to do 2 more, not planned until early afternoon on the day-of, at The Wave and Biergarten. If you don't have anyplace ou absolutely HAVE to eat, I think you'll be OK waiting until day-of to make the ADR. We stayed at ASMu and it was fine, except for not having a coffee pot in the room. Buses were bad but not as awful as before, but I really wish we'd had a car. BJ's.com has good coupons sometimes, but my favorite site lately is carrentalsavers.com.

SO excited for you- last minute trips are the BEST!!

So Mr. Linzjane88 came home yesterday and said " I was looking and I still have 4 more vacation days this year to take.....wouldn't it be funny if we just took a quick trip back to Florida?". He said it half jokingly but as any fellow Dis'er knows, if we get even an inkling to plan another trip we are on it. Out came the spreadsheets!

We can go from December 15-20 and using air miles for parts of the tickets we could feasibly do this for less than $2,000. I don't want to say money isn't an object but I am comfortable with that price range and we can afford it. That being said an extra 2 grand would always be nice tucked away in savings. All Star Movies has the pass holder rate for about $125 a nght (we got AP's on our September trip knowing we would be back). We come from Washington state so travel time is a consideration, especially for a short trip. Its at least 5 hours of flight time not including layovers. I usually 'budget' about 12 hours from our house to the hotel. We don't celebrate the holidays so that's not a factor in my decision.

I guess I am just not sure. I am such an uber-planner that this scares me. My concerns are 1) staying in a value when we are used to moderates or Bonnet Creek, 2) Week before X-Mas crowds (we are September Dis goers normally) 3) The possible insanity of travel there/ 4 park days/travel home
Would the possible joy on DD7 and DD3's faces when we pull into the airport be enough to counteract the craziness? Have you done a spur-of-the-moment trip?

I need some input :wizard:

I saw that you are going, So have fun.

There is a difference in Value to Moderate, so take that into consideration, but its only 4 nights so considerate it as part of the adventure.
You can always keep checking, sometimes rooms will open up.

With the travel time, there is really nothing that you can do so again just make it part of the adventure. The joy will counter any craziness...:love1:

DH and I live in Orlando and are AP holders, so we do a lot of " lets go" trips. I would get your fast passes and build around that. With the crowds heavy, why don't you think about doing some of things that you normally skip.

Some suggestions;
Make a day or afternoon of checking out all the chocolate creations at the Deluxe Resorts. Ending at the GF for the ginger bread house with ginger bread cookies and hot chocolate. Looking for the hidden Mickey in the creations.
Head over to one of the resorts for QS options, and take time to check out the resort. This is a great break and gives you some different options for meals. We find that having a later lunch or early dinner, helps some with the lines.
Horse and carriage ride at POFQ, then take the boat to Disney Spring for dessert at Ghirardelli.
Also you might want to think about checking out ICE at Gaylord Palms, really something special.
Over in Epcot you can check out each of the pavilions and what Santa Claus is called and looks like.
DHS for the Osborne lights this will be the last year. There are hidden Mickeys all over the display.
Ride some of the ride that you normally don't make time for. We did this with our DD's one year, and found out on the next trip that they requested some of the attractions that we had been skipping in previous trips.
Take your sense of humor and just go with it.
Have a wonderful time. pixiedust:

I'm enjoying reading this thread, being in somewhat the same mode. A couple of weeks ago I saw an online article about the fun things to do at WDW for the holidays, and they confirmed that this was the final year for the Osborne lights in their current incarnation. We've been twice during the holidays, about six years ago and last year after Thanksgiving, and especially LOVE the lights! I wasn't following message boards much after our last trip ended, since we don't make the journey very often (our next goal was 2018). But I sent the article to my husband, and that evening we discovered we were both Jonesing for one more WDW Holiday/Osborne fix. So we looked at our budget and decided we could do it, if we kept the costs down. We both have Alaska Air charge cards so got a cheap companion airfare and a pretty good deal on our flights, so we'll be flying down on New Year's Eve, returning the following Tuesday! We have dear old friends who live in Winter Garden who have repeatedly offered us a room, but we enjoy staying onsite so we'd never taken advantage of their hospitality. Fortunately, they're still happy to welcome us, And since one of them works part time at Universal, she can (probably) get us each a one-day pass. So that just leaves our rental car, Disney tickets (thank you, Undercover Tourist), and meals and any souvenirs.

I am also a huge meticulous pre-planner and it is very difficult to resist for this trip. Last trip we had the dining plan so I micro-managed all our ADRs and we ended up with so much leftover food in the mini-fridge! So far for this trip the only meal we've reserved is the the first Merry & Bright Dinner Buffet on January 1 -- managed to snag a reservation and it was too tempting to resist -- that will probably be our only "splurge" and we'll probably do counter service and offsite dining for most of our other meals. Will make a few Fastpass reservations but won't feel bound by them.

Osborne Lights, we're coming!

I planned a "last minute" Disney trip last winter when the weather in the Northeast was nothing buy sequential snow storms. I'd had quite enough and had to go someplace warmer or I was going to have a mental breakdown. I talked the wife into Disney & we kept it secret from the kids. Our budget did not allow for airfare, so we threw the kids in the minivan & trekked 2 days down & back. Sadly, when we first told them (DS7, DD4) the night before we left (so they could pick & pack Disney-appropriate belonging), it didn't really sink in, so the whole crazy excitement thrill I was expecting didn't happen... then. Of course, having all that time on the road to let it sink in, I did have about 15 minutes somewhere in Virginia where I permanently lost 23% of my high frequency hearing.

Anyway, despite the long haul down & back, my only regret was staying at an All-Star resort (Music). The room was perfectly fine, but the beds... oof. They're doubles & not the highest-quality ones either. Coming from a king-sized bed at home, it was a huge adjustment. DW and I tried sharing a bed with each other, then each kid. Unfortunately, our kids are rather "active" as they sleep, so repeated elbows and knees to my kidneys and spleen didn't make for a good night's sleep either. This time, I made sure to spring for a moderate so we'd at least get queen sized beds.

since it's last minute- keep checking for cancellations at places you want to eat,and FP+ but go with the flow if you don't get them.... eat at odd times,go out of the park to a nearby resort to try Kona for lunch for example- I would use touringplans .com for that time period and length of trip- it costs like 20.00 for the year- from what I know of those dates your best hope of doing anything outside FP+ is EARLY ...get to parks at least an hour before stated opening times...and take a mid day break to rest....

BTW as passholders you should know:rotfl2: there are SO many wonderful cs options on property..... all ears .net has every menu, and prices.... I love so may of the cs places!
