Important changes to Rent/Trade Posting Rules

I was wondering how I will know if I have 50 posts within a certain time frame if I have a large post count already? Is there some tracking system that will let you know what your post count is ?

You can click on your name and it will have a tab with statistics, you can go and count if you have 50 posts in whatever the time frame is.

:wave2: how ya doing?

You can use the board search engine, link is located just under the PM link under your username in the top right corner of every board page. Go to the advanced search options, and select the following options:

search for the last 6 months time frame
search for posts, not threads

That will bring up a total,

Then, do another search for the same thing, selecting posts only on the Rent/Trade board and subract for the total to give you the number of non-Rent/Trade posts.

Also make sure those posts are spread fairly evenly throughout the prior 6 months, we are looking for a consistent posting pattern.

Since I've been a member of DISboards, I've been more of a "spectator" on LOADS of threads. The Budget boards are my favorite! Thanks for all of the great suggestions, menus, opinions, reports, etc.
Occasionally, I've had the need to rent my unused points, and I've been very happy with using the "Rent/Trade" boards. However, with the new posting requirement, I'm a little worried that I may not make the cut.
Do the moderators have any other options to discourage the offenders?

As a DVC member who has been renting on the board for years, I am now unable to place threads. I need 50 posts and only have 40. How can I get the remaining 10 posts I'll need to post a thread for Rent? PLease help!

Looks like you will need another 49 posts spread out over the next five and a half months. Then you can post your points for rent in late June or July.

Looks like you need another 49 post during the next six months before you can post your points for rent.

There are no exceptions to the current criteria which went into effect on February 1st for posting a new thread. Any existing Rent/Trade thread has been allowed to remain open, but once it is closed, those posters will also have to meet the new criteria before they can submit a new Rent/Trade thread.

This new 50 rule is ridiculous. The moderators have gone way overboard with the addiition of rules over the past few years. The DISboards used to be easy and fun to use. Do you really want to waste your time and our time sifting through useless messages posted by people in their sole effort just to make some quota?? Do you really want that crap all over your website?

I've made 74 posts over 7 years. Does that make me a bad person? Someone who doesn't contribute? Someone who doesn't deserve to post a for sale thread once or twice a year in combination with my other non-rent posts? Does QUALITY mean nothing? Or do you only care about QUANTITY? Good information doesn't have to come in quantity. What's next? Are you going to count the words in my posts to make sure I meet a quota??

I'm sorry if I don't live/breathe/visit WDW every 2 weeks per month like some people apparently do, but I have a life outside of everything-Disney. Making 50 posts spaced out over 6 months (or even a couple of years) is just ridiculous for most ppl. I happen to really love Disney, we're going on the MEX cruise in April, but I can't just post for the sake of posting.

You know what happens to an institution that becomes too bound up with red tape? People stop using it, completely. Do you want that? Please shred ALL of these silly rules you have adopted, just get rid of all of them. You have over-engineered this. Look I get that you mods are over-worked and are trying to make it easier to mod the board, but you've gone too far with this.

Make the board wide open; dont' even bother moderating it if it really takes up so much of your time. Just let it exist on its own. The end users can sift out the garbage that appears, we don't need our hands held, we're adults.

There, now I've got a post, 49 more to go. ;) IF it get approves and I'm sure it'll just get deleted since my opinion is in complete disagreement with the ones who matter. I wonder if free speech exists on this board.

People are allowed to respectfully disagree on these boards. This thread has many examples of DISers expressing their differing opinions in a civil manner. IMHO the tone of your post crosses the line from stating an opinion to berating those who have set rules you do not like.
For what it's worth I miss the ability to post reservation wanted threads. It fit my needs better. But I do accept the reasoning behind the change and am very grateful that this FREE site is available. As many other posts have mentioned, there are lots of other venues to rent your points. Perhaps their rules are more to your liking.

So you believe that you should be entitled to make money off the DIS community but have no real desire to be part of it?

IMO, this is exactly why the rule is now in effect. Rent/trade, from all that I understand, was started as a way to allow DIS members who want to part of the community a place to do something with points they themselves could not use.

Since you really have no interest or time to be part of the community, you really should not expect to be allowed to participate in its "perks". The Rent/Trade board is just that.

Looking at your past posts, there are very few anywhere other than the Rent/Trade board. I get the feeling that when you say "DISboards" you really mean the Rent/Trade board because it doesn't look like you participated much anywhere else here. If the DIS was so easy and fun, why didn't you post more often and on more forums? I'm not being snarky, I'm really just curious.

Do you really want to waste your time and our time sifting through useless messages posted by people in their sole effort just to make some quota?? Do you really want that crap all over your website?
You are looking at this backwards. The Rent/Trade board is provided as a free service to active members of the DIS, a perk for those who help other members by answering questions and sharing information. Anyone who posts at least semi-regularly (50 posts over the previous 6 months) is deemed to be an active participant. We don't want anyone who has no real interest in being part of this community to suddenly start making lots of posts in order to use the free rental board. If it appears that someone is doing that, their rental thread will not be accepted.

I've made 74 posts over 7 years. Does that make me a bad person? Someone who doesn't contribute? We do care about quality. If it's clear someone is posting just to boost their post count, they will not qualify to use the Rent/Trade board. The DIS has a large collection of forums. Those who post only/primarily on the Rent/Trade board will need to participate in other parts of the DIS community if they want to continue to use the Rent/Trade board.

We don't want anyone to post for the sake of posting but only active members of the DIS community will be able to submit threads to the free rental board.

I've been a mod on the R/T board for over 3 years now. It has been a lot of work at times but it's gratifying to help members of the DIS community because they help me in return by sharing information and opinions that help me have a better vacation experience. It only feels like work when it seems like my efforts are going to help people who have no interest in giving back to the community.

I don't think the boards would be as enjoyable without the work of the moderators. They act as hosts, making sure questions are getting answered, newbies are being made to feel welcome, etc. I believe the moderators do a lot to help keep a sense of community here. On a practical level, they also sweep away all the spam that gets posted on a daily basis. If not for the mods, you would be wading through a lot of posts offering unlocked cell phones and cheap running shoes. :rotfl:

And to thank them for their volunteer service the mods get to see snarky posts about their efforts. What a deal.
I also am guilty of not stating my own gratitude to the mods. Thanks, Lisa, and all the others for your work, patience and tolerance.

Jean, you are totally correct. Thanks, Lisa, Chuck, et al.

I don't think the rules are that far out of line. If I was making the rules, the only change I might make is some sort of "lifetime" approval for people having a large, 1,000+ posts over several years. My though behind this is that if someone is planning on using the rent/trade board they probably haven't been to Disney for a while and may not have any need for "new" postings on the board. If they have been a poster for a long time with a large number of overall posts, the fact that the last 6 month may be light shouldn't be held against them.

I meet the current rule but mainly because I'm currently posting regularly on the WISH boards. Without those, my count the past 6 months would be pretty low. I haven't been to WDW in over a year and my next trip isn't for 7 months.

Honestly, I think the min posts should not only be higher but they should institute a $11/pp minimum. The rental price should be $14-15 range but instead has been stuck in $8-11 range for the last 5 years.

It's tough to ask $14/pp when someone else who may have just joined is asking $8 or $9/pp. Disney keeps the price up with its ROFR...so, I don't think its crazy to set a minimum rental price since there is a minimum post req...:teacher:

What you are asking for is called "Price Fixing" and that is illegal.

Some people have more time to contribute than others...I have been around since 2005 and show 600+ posts.

This month I have had some extra time and I am worried about the quality of service with DVC and how it's gone down.

I have made "30 non-Rent/Trade posts and 24 ot those have been in the past month." So, I lose the right to post on Rent board with new rules.

But, I am not the one who loses as I have many happy prior renters that contact me throughout the year. I will just have to stay in touch with them directly regarding future rentals rather than being forced to contribute when I am busy...however, new renters lose the chance to deal with someone who has been around a while and rented without incident.

Nothing but pure nonsense...
