Important changes to Rent/Trade Posting Rules

Do the new February changes only apply to DVC owners wanting to rent points? Or do they also apply to people wanting to rent from the owners?

Do the new February changes only apply to DVC owners wanting to rent points? Or do they also apply to people wanting to rent from the owners?

They apply to all thread submissions. Those seeking a reservation or transfer may still post a reply into an existing Points for Rent or Points for Transfer thread.

"11/08/09, anyone who attempts to post a reservation for rent on the Rent/Trade board that is more than 30 calendar days in the future will receive an automatic 10 point infraction" - is only for an existing reservation and if so, I guess I don't quite get it - if I have a reservation that I can't use in a few months, why can't I try to rent it out?

Haven't been on in a while but now have some points to rent out and was surprised to see that only those who have points to rent are allowed to post. I know I'm late to the conversation but it seems rather limiting now. I guess I'll have to post my points for rent and hopefully will see lots of interest but not sure I will with all the "points for rent" postings and no more "interesting in renting x # of points..."

You might want to read thru all of the informational threads at the top of the Rent/Trade.

"Reservation for Rent" threads are still welcome as long as the arrival date is within 30 days of the date the thread is submitted. Also welcome are "Points for Rent", "Points for Rent/Tranfer", "Point Transfer Wanted", "Trade Offered", "Trade Wanted" and "Trade Transfer".

Those looking for a DVC reservation can respond to any of the "Points for Rent", "Points for Rent/Transfer" and "Reservation for Rent" threads. They can even post that they are interested in "renting x # of points".

Not sure if you received an answer to the question you posted. My understanding is that people were using the rent/trade board to basically sell reservations. For instance people would book hard to get reservation like at Christmas time and then rent them for higer prices. It must have become a problem so they had to change the rules. Prior to 30 days from travel there is no penalty for cancelling a reservation. Hence the reason they let you post an exisiting reservation within 30 days from travel. Hope that clears it up a little.

With all the advertisements on this site surprised the moderators are volunteers you would think they could pay someone part time at least to help...........

Since you need to reconsider recommending the DIS to others, does that also mean you don't plan to use the DVC Rent/Trade Board for your personal benefit either?

The Moderators on the DIS have always been happy to contribute their time. The Rent/Trade policies are there to reflect the actual intent of the board and have nothing to do with the time volunteered by Moderators. The DIS does not charge anything to use the service and paying "someone part time" would not change that intent in any way as it's not about the time involved.

It's too bad that some refuse to consider being an active participant in our community and even more so when they seem to expect that using the Rent/Trade Board is a right rather than a benefit of participation in the very community they expect to benefit from financially.

I just want to make sure I am clear, you do not need 50 posts to view or post on the rent board on someone else's post, you just need 50 posts spread evenly over 6 months to place your own points for rent? Also, how/who determines if someone qualifies? Meaning, if I have 20 posts one month, nothing the next 2 months but then have 15 posts the following 3 months does that count or does it have to be at least 9 posts every single month?

I'm kind of confused about that too Momof3.....I'm a long time member, but don't post as often as I used to. Frankly, it is mostly because I'm now a pretty experienced WDW visitor and don't have nearly as many questions as I used to when I was more of a "newbie".

I do stop by more frequently when I am starting to plan a trip - and also around the time of my banking window. Under the new rules, I have no idea if I would be qualified to post on the R/T board or not.....I don't know how to "count" my own posts. :confused3

The Rent/Trade Moderators recognize that there are real-life circumstances that mean there are times when some posters are unable to participate in discussions. They are actually going to look at posting patterns and will consider that over the past 6 months (beginning on February 1).

The moderators will be reasonable about considering the effort made by those submitting threads but it would be best to just make 2 posts per week so there is no question about the effort made of the past 6 months to be able to benefit from renting on the Rent/Trade Board.

Click on your username in any post you've made (or check your User Control Panel) and then select "Find More Posts by rascalmom" and a listing of all your posts will appear. You can then review your posts over the past 6 months. It appears that you have made about 124 posts over the past 6 months and only 5 have been on the Rent/Trade Board. Those posts have been pretty evenly distributed over 6 months and should be fine for submitting a thread after February 1 as long as a similar effort continues in the future.

Since you consider yourself a "pretty experienced WDW visitor" not having as many questions, why not continue to respond to those who do have questions. The contribution works both ways. Most of your posts over the past 6 months have certainly been in assistance to others. :)

I do typically try to do that, the past few months have just been a particularly busy time in my life. When I have internet "surfing" time though, I do always try to check in here & I'm always happy to answer questions when I know the information. My "experience" is getting a little rusty though - it has been almost 4 years since we were at the World! One of the reasons I've been around more - to get my "fix" on other's pixie dust and to start planning/dreaming about our next trip!

Thanks Doc!!

Thank you! I have been a member for 8 years but I like to lurk a lot:goodvibes. I guess I am a sporadic poster. I will have to try and make sure I post more consistently. Although I have only rented my points twice, it is nice to have the option to post here. Thanks again for the info.

I like how careful DIS is with the R/T board. And the new rules make perfect sense to me. But one thing that is irritating is when a user who hasn't been active in a long time wants to rent points and they see the new rule about having a certain amount of posts recently. So they start going through old threads and leaving generic comments that don't add anything to the thread. Usually they are just repeating what was already expressed by multiple other members throughout that very thread.

It's not a perfect system and I don't think I'd change the rules. But I wish there was something we could do to prevent this quick-participation effort on their part. I don't even mind one thread with multiple posts from someone who is is trying to get to 10 so they can PM. I can easily ignore that one thread. But when there are 10 old threads with new comments on them, it takes a little more effort to go through each of those only to find if the newest comment is worth reading or just part of the campaign to gain full access to the R/T board.

To avoid the inconvenience, once you discover a poster doing that, try putting him/her on your ignore list. (Click on User CP, then on the link for EDIT ignore list).

FWIW, most of those posters are wasting their time since they are not getting their posts approved for the R/T Board - they're getting PMs from the mods letting them know a barrage of posts over a few hours or days is not acceptable. The mods can tell the difference between "quantity" posts and "quality" posts and can definitely see the posting patterns.

Thanks, CarolMN and other mods.

As a DVC member who has been renting on the board for years, I am now unable to place threads. I need 50 posts and only have 40. How can I get the remaining 10 posts I'll need to post a thread for Rent? PLease help!

Start participating?

And you will need 50 meaningful posts over the period of time requested by the mods, not 10. I don't think your 40 posts on the R/T boards are counted. Check the thread (it's a locked thread) that says "Reminder - new R/T Boards effective February 1" - it will have the specific rules in it.
